On Android Auto, start Google Maps voice navigation with “Hey Google,” the on-screen microphone, or a compatible steering-wheel voice button. On CarPlay, Google documents an in-app microphone for searching for a stop while navigating; Siri is a separate CarPlay voice control, and Google does not document a universal Maps wake phrase for CarPlay.
Android Auto: start Google Maps directions by voice
Connect your phone to Android Auto using your vehicle’s supported setup, then open Google Maps. You can start voice input in any of these ways:

- Say “Hey Google.”
- Tap the microphone on the car display.
- If your vehicle has a compatible steering-wheel voice button, press and hold it until you hear a tone, then speak.
Google lists requests such as “Take me home,” “Navigate to [location],” “Directions to [shop name],” “Navigate to work,” and “Drive to [address].” To end a route, say “Stop navigation.” If the assistant offers more than one matching place, confirm the destination you mean. Google’s Android Auto voice-command guide also describes asking for directions, estimated arrival time, and live traffic.

CarPlay: use Google Maps voice search for a stop
Open Google Maps on the CarPlay display, choose a destination, and tap Go. To search for an additional stop by voice during navigation:
- Tap anywhere on the screen to reveal the top menu bar.
- Tap Add stop.
- Tap the microphone and speak your search.
This is the Google-documented in-app voice-search flow for adding a stop. Google’s help page does not describe a universal wake phrase for controlling Google Maps on CarPlay. See Google Maps on CarPlay for the current instructions.
How Siri fits into CarPlay
Siri is a separate CarPlay voice control, not the same thing as Google Maps’ in-app microphone. Apple says you can activate Siri by holding the steering-wheel voice-command button, holding the Dashboard or Home button on the CarPlay screen, or saying “Hey Siri” in supported vehicles. Apple’s examples include asking for directions to a nearby coffee shop, sharing an ETA, or reporting an accident. These are Siri and CarPlay capabilities; the reviewed Google instructions do not establish that every Siri request will control Google Maps specifically. Apple’s CarPlay Siri guide explains the activation options.

Assistant availability and compatibility
Google’s Android Auto guidance describes a transition from Google Assistant to Gemini, so the assistant experience may differ as availability changes. Google’s iPhone Maps guidance says Gemini is not currently available for CarPlay. Check Google’s current support pages for your device and region rather than assuming the same assistant works across both platforms: Android Auto and Google Maps for CarPlay.
Google’s CarPlay page lists an iPhone 5 or later, iOS 12 or later, Google Maps version 5.24 or later, and a CarPlay-supported vehicle as requirements. These are the requirements published on that page and may change. Voice features can also vary by vehicle, language, region, and other conditions; consult your vehicle manual for the specific steering-wheel controls and support in your car. Google notes that Android Auto availability and features vary.

Navigation directions are too quiet
Some vehicles have separate volume controls for navigation, media, and voice. In CarPlay, adjust the vehicle’s volume while Google Maps is speaking navigation guidance; changing volume at another time may affect a different audio channel. See Google’s CarPlay Maps help.
Voice input is missing or behaves differently
Check which platform you are using, whether the vehicle supports it, and whether the relevant language, region, and assistant features are available. Google cautions that some functions are unavailable in certain languages and regions. For Android Auto, use voice input if the car is moving; on-screen destination typing requires Park.
