Google Lens can help you find a likely match for an old cable, charger, or gadget, but treat its results as clues—not proof. Photograph the item clearly, search its connector or label in a focused crop, then confirm any model or electrical specifications with the manufacturer before buying a replacement or plugging it in.
What Lens can—and cannot—identify
Lens can return object-related results, visually similar images, and pages that use the same or a similar image. Those results can point you toward a product name or model, but they do not guarantee an exact identification. Google describes visual search and related results, not electrical compatibility verification (Google Search Help).

For an unlabeled cable, Lens may suggest what a connector resembles. For a charger, a similar-looking plug or product photo cannot establish voltage, current, wattage, polarity, or whether it is safe for a particular device. Confirm those details in the device and charger manufacturer’s documentation before reuse.

How to search an old cable, charger, or gadget
- Take clear, well-lit photos. Start with the whole item for context, then photograph each connector end and any brand name, molded code, model number, rating label, or barcode. Google recommends a clear, well-lit image; the separate close-ups help expose details that may be hard to see in an overall shot (Google Search Help).
- Open Lens or image search on your device. On supported mobile devices, use the Google app or Chrome to search with a camera image or an existing photo. Lens can also be opened on a photo in Google Photos. On a computer, Google Search supports uploading an image, dragging and dropping one, or searching by image URL; in Chrome, right-click a webpage image and choose Lens. Google lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge as compatible browsers for computer visual search. Entry points and controls vary by platform and app version (Google Search Help; Google Search Help).
- Select one useful detail. If the image includes a cluttered drawer, a whole pile, or several objects, select only one item or connector. For a cable, search each end separately and note the visible shape, approximate size, and whether the connector appears male or female. Selecting a smaller region can make results more specific (Google Search Help).
- Refine the search with confirmed details. Add terms for features you can actually see, such as a brand or connector type. For example, a search like “USB-A to micro-USB” is useful only if both ends really match those connectors. Do not add a model, electrical rating, or connector type based only on a Lens guess. Google supports refining a visual search with additional terms (Google Search Help).
- Read markings with Lens text selection. Select readable text, copy the model or code, and search that exact text together with the brand. If the item has a barcode, scan it for product information. A barcode result or matching photo is still a lead; check that the result refers to the same model and item (Google Search Help; Google Assistant Help).
- Verify the candidate before acting on it. Compare the candidate with the manufacturer’s product page or manual. For a charger, confirm the exact device and charger specifications in manufacturer documentation; do not rely on connector appearance, a similar image, or a marketplace listing to establish compatibility.

Privacy and image-search considerations
Avoid including private documents or sensitive information in the frame. Google’s Chrome for Android guidance says that when Lens searches webpage content, a screenshot and page data are sent to Google to help select objects, with temporary storage for processing that query (Google Chrome Help). Google’s Android guidance describes controls for Lens activity, including account activity management and deletion; it says turning off Web & App Activity prevents Lens activity from being saved to the Google Account. Check the current controls for your device and account (Google Photos Help).
