To get started, break your idea into one shot-sized prompt, choose a compatible video model in a Flow project, generate a few options, and refine the prompt or references based on what you see. The steps below use a fictional courier in a rain-soaked night market; they describe the intended workflow, not a guaranteed recipe for a particular result.
Before you start: check access and set up
Google says Flow requires users to be at least 18, be in a supported region, and have an eligible Google AI subscription. Its current getting-started page lists Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra; access and plan rules can change. Google recommends using Flow on desktop in a Chromium-based browser for the best experience. Check the current requirements in Google Flow Help.

Turn the idea into one shot-sized prompt
Describe one scene or shot at a time. Google Flow Help advises: “Be specific about the subject, action, environment, lighting, and style.” Those elements give you a practical starting checklist:

- Subject: Who or what should be visible?
- Action: What happens during this shot?
- Environment: Where does it happen, and what details define the setting?
- Lighting: What is the light like, and where does it come from?
- Style: What visual treatment or mood are you aiming for?
For the example, start with the idea “a courier crosses a rain-soaked night market and stops beneath a red awning.” Expand it with concrete visual details, such as a crowded market lane, reflections on wet pavement, warm stall lights against a dark blue night, and a medium-wide composition that keeps the courier visible. Treat this as an illustrative prompt, not a tested formula. A prompt can guide the result but cannot guarantee exact staging or style.
Keep the description focused on what should appear in this shot. If a major action needs several distinct beats, such as entering the market, crossing the lane, and stopping, consider generating separate clips rather than asking one short clip to communicate an entire sequence.
Generate a first video from text
- In your Flow project, enter the shot description. Include the subject, action, setting, lighting, and style you have chosen.
- Choose Video as the generation type, then select a model that supports the workflow you want.
- Set the output options. Choose an aspect ratio, the number of outputs, and a generation length where those controls are available.
- Review the active model, resolution, and credit cost in Flow. Model features and costs differ and may change, so use the live selector and in-product details before spending credits.
- Generate a small set of options. Compare how each handles the subject, action, setting, and visual treatment before deciding what to revise.
Google’s model documentation describes different duration options for different workflows: several Veo workflows list 4-, 6-, and 8-second options, while some Gemini Omni Flash workflows list 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-second options. These are model-specific product options, not a promise that every account or workflow will show them. Check the current model guide and Flow interface for compatibility, duration, and cost: getting started with Flow and Flow models and features. Google says failed generations are not charged credits.

Use visual references when continuity matters
If the same character or key object needs to recur across clips, add it as an ingredient or project asset when the selected model supports that option. Use Flow’s @ selection to refer to a project asset, and explain how it should appear in the shot—for example, “use the courier from @Courier as the subject, wearing the same yellow rain jacket.” A clear subject or product reference, ideally against a plain or segmented background, can make the intended visual easier to identify.

References can help carry a character or object from clip to clip, but they do not guarantee perfect continuity. Make sure the written prompt agrees with the reference; contradictory descriptions and visual inputs can pull the result in different directions. Support for ingredients and other inputs varies by model.
Use start and end frames to guide a transition
When your chosen workflow supports frames, provide a start frame, an end frame, or both, then describe the action that should connect them. For example, a start frame might show the courier entering the market and an end frame might show them stopped beneath the red awning. The prompt can describe the crossing movement between those endpoints.
Frames give the model visual endpoints to work toward; they do not ensure that every in-between detail will match your intent. Frame availability depends on the model, region, and platform. Flow also supports images and, in supported workflows, video inputs, but the active model determines which inputs and edits are available.
Revise deliberately instead of changing everything
Use the first outputs as feedback. Note what worked—perhaps the wet pavement reads clearly—and what did not, such as the courier being too small in frame. Then change one or two details and generate another small set. Changing many prompt elements at once makes it harder to tell which instruction affected the result.

- If the subject is unclear, describe distinguishing features or use a suitable reference.
- If the action is hard to read, simplify it to one main movement for the shot.
- If the setting is missing, name a few defining details rather than adding a long list of unrelated objects.
- If the framing is wrong, state the composition or camera perspective you want, where supported by the workflow.
- If a transition feels off, clarify the movement between the start and end frames, or adjust the frames.
Use the Flow Agent for planning and prompt development
The Flow Agent can help brainstorm a concept, outline storyboards or mood boards, turn an idea into actionable prompts, create variations, edit assets, and organize project media. You can use it to develop the night-market idea into a sequence of shots before generating clips. Google’s Agent guide currently describes availability on web and PC; platform access may change. Agent queries do not currently use credits, though they are subject to a daily quota. Media generated through the Agent uses Flow credits, so check the displayed cost before asking it to generate assets.
Check output labeling and applicable terms
Google says Flow outputs generated with Veo, Omni, or Nano Banana include invisible SynthID watermarks. Its Help page also says a visible watermark may be applied automatically in India, South Korea, and Vietnam. Watermarking and product rules can change; consult the current Flow Help information for your region.
Do not assume that generated footage is cleared for every intended use. Google directs users to its Terms of Service for applicable terms; review them for your use case.
