You can use Gemini on a Windows PC or Mac through Google’s native desktop app, in a browser at gemini.google.com, or—if you use Chrome—through Gemini in Chrome. The right choice depends on your computer, account, and whether you want a quick-access app window or Chrome-specific controls. The native Mac app has an additional voice-and-window workflow; the native Windows app does not have the same Speak to Window feature.
Choose how you want to access Gemini
These three routes provide access to Gemini, but they are separate products with different setup steps and keyboard shortcuts. Install a native app if you want a desktop application and its system-wide quick-access shortcut. Use the web app if you prefer not to install software or want to use a supported browser. Use Gemini in Chrome if you want Gemini integrated with Chrome and its tab and selection controls.

| Route | What you use | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Gemini desktop app | A Windows or Mac application | Opening a dedicated Gemini window with a desktop shortcut | Mac and Windows have different requirements; Speak to Window is a Mac app feature. |
| Gemini web app | A browser tab at gemini.google.com | Using Gemini without installing its native app | Some basic use is available signed out, but additional features and activity saving require sign-in. |
| Gemini in Chrome | Gemini integrated into Chrome | Opening Gemini, switching between it and a tab, or starting selection mode in Chrome | Its shortcuts are not the shortcuts for the native desktop app. |
Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edge as supported browsers for Gemini Apps. Which features you can use may depend on your account and the feature. For organization accounts, administrator settings and the organization’s plan or license can also affect access. See Google’s Gemini Apps computer help for browser and account details.
A useful way to choose is to start with the action you want most. If you want a separate chat window that you can summon with a desktop shortcut, check the native app requirements first. If you simply want to open Gemini in a browser and avoid an install, use the web app. If you want Gemini alongside a Chrome tab and want to switch between them or select page content, use Gemini in Chrome. Installing the desktop app does not turn its shortcut into a Chrome shortcut, and using Chrome does not give you the Mac app’s Speak to Window workflow.

Check whether your computer and account qualify
Google’s native app requirements differ most notably on Mac: the Mac app requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later. The Windows app requires Windows 10 or later. Both apps require at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of free disk space, and a stable internet connection. They are not documented as offline apps.
| Requirement | Windows native app | Mac native app |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system and hardware | Windows 10 or later | Apple Silicon Mac with macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM or more | At least 8 GB RAM |
| Free storage | At least 200 MB | At least 200 MB |
| Connection | Stable internet connection | Stable internet connection |
| Account | Personal Google Account, or a work or school Google Account whose administrator has enabled Gemini | Personal Google Account, or an enabled work or school account |
These are the requirements stated on Google’s help pages for the Windows app and Mac app. If you have an Intel-based Mac, or a Mac that cannot run Sequoia 15.0 or later, the documented native Mac requirements are not met; use the web app in a supported browser instead. If you use a work or school account and Gemini is unavailable, ask your administrator whether it has been enabled for your account.
Check the account as well as the computer. A personal Google Account is listed as an option for both native apps. A work or school account is not automatically eligible just because you can sign in to Google: its administrator must enable Gemini. Organizations may also have plans or licenses that affect which features users can access. If the app opens but a feature is missing, that does not necessarily mean your computer failed the system requirements; access can vary with account type and feature.
The 8 GB and 200 MB figures are minimums in Google’s app requirements, not a recommendation to buy or upgrade a computer. You also need a stable internet connection, so a successful install does not mean the app can provide its Gemini service offline.
Install the native Gemini app on Windows
- On the Windows PC, open gemini.google/desktop and download
GeminiSetup.exe. - Run
GeminiSetup.exeand follow the installer’s prompts. - Open Gemini from the Start menu.
- Sign in with a personal Google Account or an eligible work or school account.
Once installed and running, press Alt + Space to open the native app’s quick-access window. This is the Windows desktop-app shortcut; it is not the shortcut for Gemini in Chrome. Google documents the install and shortcut in its Windows app instructions.
Update the Windows app
When an update notification appears as the app opens, choose Restart to install the available update. The documented update flow is tied to that notification.
If the shortcut does not produce the window you expect, first check that you installed and opened the native app rather than navigating to Gemini in Chrome. Alt + Space belongs to the Windows native app, while Gemini in Chrome uses Alt + G to open or close its interface. Also confirm that the desktop app is running; the shortcut is described as quick access to the installed app.

After installation, press Option + Space to open the chat window. The Mac app also has a separate Speak to Window workflow, described below. For the full requirements and installation steps, see Google’s Mac app help page.
Check for a Mac app update
In Gemini, choose Gemini > Check for Updates. This menu route is different from the Windows app’s documented update notification.
Option + Space opens the native Mac app’s chat window; it is not the Speak to Window shortcut. Google says Speak to Window’s shortcut behavior can be customized in settings, so do not assume that Option + Space launches voice interaction. If you are on an Intel Mac or cannot use macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later, the native Mac app requirements are not met; the web app in a supported browser is the alternative described by Google.
Use Gemini in a browser without installing the desktop app
- Open a supported browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, or Edge.
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- Start using the features available to you. Sign in if you need features that require an account or want Gemini Apps activity saved.
Some use is available without signing in. Google says signed-out users do not have access to certain capabilities, including past chats, personalization, Connected Apps, image generation, Gems, and file upload. Availability may vary by account and feature, so the signed-in experience is not necessarily identical for every user. Google’s computer guide to Gemini Apps describes the web experience and sign-in differences.
For a browser session, start a chat and describe what you want to do. When the feature is available to your account, you can add a file or image for context, edit a prompt, and review other drafts for some prompts. A prompt edit is useful if the first request was too broad: clarify the format, audience, or constraints instead of starting over with an unrelated question. Other drafts are not listed as an option for every prompt, so their absence does not indicate a setup problem.
You can also ask Gemini to create a file in a supported format. Google lists Docs and Sheets files, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF, and Markdown. The format list describes possible outputs, not a promise that each format or file action appears for every account. If you do not see a file, upload, or image option, check whether you are signed in and whether that feature is available to your account.
What you can do with Gemini on desktop
Google lists quick answers, drafting, summarizing articles, documents, and web pages, brainstorming, coding help, and image analysis among the capabilities of the native Windows and Mac apps. In the browser-based Gemini Apps interface, you can start a chat, add a file or image, edit a prompt, and review other drafts for some prompts. You can also ask Gemini to create files in supported formats, including Docs and Sheets files, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF, and Markdown. These capabilities are not a guarantee that every account can use every feature: Google notes that availability varies by account and feature.
Think of the desktop app capabilities as a set of task types rather than a special guarantee of accuracy. For example, you can ask for a draft, a summary, ideas, coding assistance, or an analysis of an image. For a web page or document, make the intended output explicit—such as a short summary or a list of key points—so you can check whether the response matches the task. When using an uploaded file or image, make sure the feature is available in your account and that the item is attached before relying on the result.

A practical desktop workflow
- Choose where the task belongs. Open the native app for its quick-access window, the web app for a browser-based session, or Gemini in Chrome for Chrome-specific integration.
- State the task and provide context. Ask for the answer, draft, summary, brainstorm, or coding help you need. In the web app, you can attach a file or image where available; the native apps also list image analysis among their capabilities.
- Refine the request when needed. Edit your prompt to clarify audience, format, scope, or constraints. For some prompts, Gemini offers other drafts to review.
- Check the result before using it. Verify important claims against reliable sources and review generated text or files for errors, missing context, and formatting issues.
For a consequential task, treat Gemini’s answer as a starting point rather than an authority. Google warns that “Gemini Apps can make mistakes,” advises users to double-check responses, and says not to rely on them for professional advice. Read Google’s Gemini Apps help for its guidance.
This applies whether you use the app, browser, or Chrome integration. A well-formatted answer or a generated file is not proof that its facts are correct. For decisions that matter, check important claims with reliable sources and, where appropriate, a qualified professional. For code, review and test the output before using it. Google’s warning is especially relevant when an answer could affect a professional decision.
Use Speak to Window on the Mac app
Speak to Window is a Mac app workflow for working with text and context across app windows. Google says it can dictate cleaned-up text at the cursor, revise selected text, summarize files such as documents, PDFs, and images, generate images by voice, and carry context across app windows. It is distinct from simply dictating a prompt into a Gemini chat.
- Open Gemini on your Mac and use the Speak to Window controls described in the app.
- To dictate, hold Fn while speaking, then release it to submit. Google also describes a tap-Fn option and in-app controls.
- For text at the cursor, speak the wording you want inserted. For selected text, use the workflow to request a revision. You can also ask it to work with a supported file or context across windows.
- If you want to control how the feature interprets spoken input, adjust the Use reasoning setting. Google says this setting can distinguish instructions from dictation.
The Speak to Window shortcut behavior can be customized in the Mac app’s settings. The exact shortcut is therefore not a universal fixed key combination. Consult Google’s Mac app instructions for the app’s current controls.

Dictation is for text you want entered at the cursor; revising selected text asks Gemini to change existing wording. The Use reasoning option can distinguish instructions from dictation, so check that setting if spoken words are being treated as the wrong kind of input. For a file-based task, Google lists documents, PDFs, and images as examples that can be summarized. The feature can also carry context across app windows, unlike simply entering a standalone chat prompt.
Google describes both holding Fn while speaking and a tap-Fn option with in-app controls. The precise Speak to Window shortcut behavior can be changed in settings, so consult the Mac app’s current controls rather than applying the chat-window shortcut or a Gemini in Chrome shortcut to this workflow.
Keyboard shortcuts: native apps versus Gemini in Chrome
Use the row matching the product you opened. The first row is for the standalone Gemini desktop app; the other rows are for Gemini in Chrome. Mixing these shortcut sets is a common source of confusion.
| Product and action | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Native Gemini app: open quick-access window or chat | Alt + Space | Option + Space |
| Gemini in Chrome: open or close Gemini | Alt + G | Ctrl + G |
| Gemini in Chrome: switch between the tab and Gemini | Alt + Shift + G | Ctrl + Command + G |
| Gemini in Chrome: start selection mode | Ctrl + Alt + G | Ctrl + Shift + G |
Google’s Gemini in Chrome shortcut help says you can customize these Chrome shortcuts through More options > Settings & help > Open Chrome settings, then edit the shortcut. That customization route applies to Gemini in Chrome, not to the native app shortcuts in the table’s first row.
Use the shortcut’s action as a quick check: Alt + Space or Option + Space opens the native app window; the Chrome combinations control Gemini within Chrome. For example, on Windows, Alt + G opens or closes Gemini in Chrome, Alt + Shift + G switches between the tab and Gemini, and Ctrl + Alt + G starts selection mode. On Mac, the corresponding Chrome actions are Ctrl + G, Ctrl + Command + G, and Ctrl + Shift + G. The Mac native app’s Option + Space is separate from all three.
To change a Chrome shortcut, open Gemini in Chrome, go to More options > Settings & help > Open Chrome settings, and edit the shortcut there. Do not use that Chrome settings route to look for the native app shortcut. Google documents the customization for Gemini in Chrome; Speak to Window’s shortcut behavior is controlled separately in the Mac app settings.
Choose the route that fits your setup
- Choose the Windows native app if your PC meets the listed Windows requirements and you want a desktop app opened with Alt + Space.
- Choose the Mac native app if you have Apple Silicon and macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later, especially if you want Speak to Window in addition to the chat window.
- Choose the Gemini web app if you prefer not to install an app, are using a computer that does not meet the native-app requirements, or want to use a listed browser.
- Choose Gemini in Chrome if your main need is Chrome’s separate open/close, tab-switching, and selection-mode controls.
Account access is a separate consideration from the route: personal accounts are listed for the native apps, while work and school accounts need Gemini enabled by an administrator. Browser access can also be used signed out, but the feature set is narrower than when signed in.
In short, choose the native app for its desktop window and app-specific shortcut, the browser app for browser-based access without a native install, and Gemini in Chrome for Chrome’s integration and its own shortcut set. On Mac, add Speak to Window to the decision only if you meet the Apple Silicon and macOS requirements and want its text, voice, file, and cross-window workflow.
