How to Use Gamerules on a Minecraft Bedrock Server

A practical guide to Minecraft Bedrock gamerules: use the right chat or console syntax, set common rules such as keep inventory and no PvP, handle integer settings, verify changes, and fix permission or spelling errors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use /gamerule in an authorized operator’s chat, or gamerule without the slash in a Bedrock Dedicated Server console. Run the command with no arguments to inspect settings, or add a documented rule name and a value to change one. Boolean rules accept only true or false; integer rules accept a number. Query the rule again after every change so you know the server accepted it.

What a Bedrock gamerule does

A gamerule is a world-level setting that changes a specific gameplay system. It can preserve inventories after death, stop natural weather or daylight changes, prevent mob griefing, disable player-versus-player damage, expose coordinates, control command feedback, or alter timed systems such as random ticks and sleeping. The setting applies to the world or server rather than only to the player who typed it.

Microsoft’s current /gamerule reference describes the command as one that “sets or queries a game rule value.” Its command entry says cheats are not required for the command itself, but the sender still needs the required authority. The reference identifies the permission level as Game Directors. On a hosted world, that normally means an operator or another account granted equivalent permissions; on a dedicated server, the console is an administrative control channel.

Use the exact Bedrock rule names and lowercase spellings. Names from Java Edition guides, renamed rules, or a misspelled command can be rejected even when the intended setting sounds correct.

Chat syntax versus dedicated-server console syntax

In-game chat

In a running Bedrock world, open chat and enter the command with a leading slash:

/gamerule

To set a value, use:

/gamerule <rule> true
/gamerule <rule> false

Replace <rule> with a documented Boolean rule. For an integer rule, replace the value with a permitted whole number:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/gamerule <integer-rule> <integer>

The slash is the normal chat command prefix. Your account must have operator-level authority (the command reference calls this Game Directors permission), and the world must allow you to administer it.

Bedrock Dedicated Server console

In the server process console, omit the slash. Microsoft’s example is:

gamerule doDayLightCycle false

For consistency with the current Bedrock command list and examples in this guide, use the documented lowercase form dodaylightcycle when entering commands. A console command therefore looks like:

gamerule dodaylightcycle false

The console is not the same as the game chat window. Pasting /gamerule ... into a dedicated-server console can fail because the console expects the command without its slash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Getting access to a Bedrock Dedicated Server

Microsoft distributes the Bedrock Dedicated Server as free software in a ZIP package. On Windows, start the bedrock_server executable. On Ubuntu Linux, Microsoft documents starting it with:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server

Once the server is running, type commands into its console. You do not need to open a player session to change a gamerule from that administrative console.

If you need to administer the world from inside the game, an existing administrator can grant operator privileges with the server command:

op <playername>

Replace <playername> with the player’s actual name. Only give operator access to people you trust: the same authority that permits gamerules can permit many other administrative actions.

Check the current gamerules before changing anything

Run the no-argument form to inspect the current settings:

/gamerule

In the dedicated-server console, use:

gamerule

The returned list or value gives you a baseline. Record important settings before experimenting, especially on a shared survival world. Querying is also the fastest way to confirm whether a previous change persisted after a restart.

For a repeatable change, use this sequence:

  1. Query the current rules and note the value you intend to change.
  2. Set one rule with its exact Bedrock name and an allowed value.
  3. Query again and confirm the returned value matches your intended setting.
  4. Have a player test the gameplay behavior when the rule affects a visible system such as inventory, weather, PvP, or coordinates.

Changing one rule at a time is useful on production worlds. If several settings are changed together and the result is unexpected, you cannot easily tell which command caused it. A short record of the old value, new value, date, and administrator also makes rollback possible.

Common Boolean gamerules and exact commands

Boolean rules accept only true or false. These examples cover the settings most Bedrock server administrators ask about.

Goal Chat command Result
Keep items after death /gamerule keepinventory true Players keep their inventory when they die.
Stop mob griefing /gamerule mobgriefing false Mob griefing is disabled through this rule.
Disable PvP /gamerule pvp false Players cannot damage one another through the PvP rule.
Show coordinates /gamerule showcoordinates true Coordinates are displayed to players.
Freeze the day/night clock /gamerule dodaylightcycle false The current time remains fixed until the rule is enabled again.
Freeze weather /gamerule doweathercycle false The current weather remains in place until the rule changes.
Stop natural mob spawning /gamerule domobspawning false Natural mob spawning is disabled.
Stop TNT explosions /gamerule tntexplodes false TNT cannot explode through this rule.
Hide command-block output /gamerule commandblockoutput false Command-block output is hidden from chat.
Hide command feedback /gamerule sendcommandfeedback false Broader command feedback is disabled.
Disable command blocks /gamerule commandblocksenabled false Command blocks cannot operate in the world.

To reverse any of these changes, run the same command with the opposite Boolean value. For example, /gamerule keepinventory false restores normal inventory loss on death.

Important differences between similar rules

commandblockoutput and sendcommandfeedback

commandblockoutput false suppresses messages generated by command blocks. sendcommandfeedback false suppresses broader command feedback. They control different message sources, so turning off one does not automatically turn off the other. If a server still displays feedback after you silence command-block output, check the second rule.

domobspawning and mobgriefing

domobspawning false addresses natural spawning. mobgriefing false addresses the ability of mobs to alter or damage the environment through griefing behavior. A world can have mobs present while preventing their griefing, or prevent new natural spawns while leaving existing entities in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freezing time and weather

Disabling dodaylightcycle freezes the current time; it does not choose a new time by itself. Disable the rule after setting the desired time through whatever time command or world workflow you use. Similarly, doweathercycle false holds the weather that is currently active. Re-enable the cycle when you want normal transitions to resume.

Integer gamerules: numbers instead of true or false

Some Bedrock rules take an integer. The current command reference lists these integer rules:

Integer rule What it controls Input form
randomtickspeed The rate of random block ticks, affecting time-based block and crop behavior. /gamerule randomtickspeed <integer>
spawnradius The radius used for player spawning around the world spawn. /gamerule spawnradius <integer>
playerssleepingpercentage The percentage of players who must be sleeping for the sleep condition to take effect. /gamerule playerssleepingpercentage <integer>
maxcommandchainlength The maximum length of a command-block chain. /gamerule maxcommandchainlength <integer>
functioncommandlimit The command limit applied when functions execute. /gamerule functioncommandlimit <integer>

Use the numeric ranges and defaults shown for your Bedrock version in Microsoft’s current gamerule reference. The reference documents limits and defaults for several of these controls; do not assume a Java Edition value or copy a number from an unrelated version. If a value is outside the accepted range, the command is rejected or the setting is not applied.

For example, the correct structure is:

/gamerule playerssleepingpercentage 50
/gamerule spawnradius 10

The numbers above illustrate syntax; verify the range and the value you want for your server before applying them. Always query the rule afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Integer controls are useful when you want a measured change rather than an on/off switch. A sleep percentage changes how many players must participate, while spawn radius changes where players appear around world spawn. Random tick speed affects the pace of systems driven by random ticks, so changing it can alter gameplay pacing. Command-chain and function limits matter primarily to technical worlds and automation. Because these settings can have broad effects, test them on a copy or during a maintenance window when possible.

Choosing a configuration by server goal

Compare a proposed setup across six practical axes: survival difficulty, world protection, time and ambience, multiplayer interaction, automation and moderation, and performance or gameplay pacing.

  • Survival difficulty: keepinventory changes the consequence of death, while playersleepingpercentage changes how easily a group advances past night.
  • World protection: mobgriefing, tntexplodes, and the daylight and weather cycles determine how much environmental change players must manage.
  • Time and ambience: Freeze daylight or weather for builds, tours, and events; leave both enabled for a conventional survival experience.
  • Multiplayer interaction: pvp controls player damage, and sleep percentage controls a shared nighttime decision.
  • Automation and moderation: Command-block enablement and the two feedback rules determine whether automation runs and how visible its output is.
  • Pacing and performance: Natural mob spawning, random tick speed, spawn radius, and command limits affect activity and technical workloads.

Do not treat one profile as universally best. A cooperative survival server may want keep inventory and no PvP, while an event world may freeze time and weather. Write down the intended profile and announce differences from ordinary Bedrock behavior.

Practical server configurations

Combining rules produces a server style. Change only the settings that match your players’ expectations, and write them down so new administrators know what is intentional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protected cooperative survival

  • /gamerule keepinventory true reduces the penalty for accidental deaths.
  • /gamerule mobgriefing false protects builds from mob-driven environmental damage.
  • /gamerule pvp false prevents fights between players.
  • /gamerule showcoordinates true helps players navigate and report locations.

This profile keeps ordinary day, weather, spawning, and redstone-related behavior unless you deliberately change those systems.

Build or event world

  • Use /gamerule dodaylightcycle false to keep a consistent time of day.
  • Use /gamerule doweathercycle false to prevent weather from changing during an event.
  • Use /gamerule domobspawning false to remove natural-spawn interruptions.
  • Use /gamerule tntexplodes false to protect structures from TNT explosions.
  • Use /gamerule commandblocksenabled false when command blocks should not run.

These are independent controls. Turning off command blocks does not turn off TNT, and freezing weather does not stop mobs from spawning.

Quiet administration

  • /gamerule commandblockoutput false hides command-block messages.
  • /gamerule sendcommandfeedback false suppresses additional command feedback.

Apply this combination only after administrators have another way to diagnose command failures; fewer messages also mean fewer clues when a command chain breaks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to troubleshoot a rejected or ineffective command

1. Check the execution location

In chat, use the slash. In the dedicated-server console, remove it. A command copied between those two places is a common source of failure.

2. Check the exact Bedrock spelling

Use names such as keepinventory, mobgriefing, dodaylightcycle, and doweathercycle exactly as documented. Do not insert spaces, change the spelling to a Java Edition variant, or substitute a similar-sounding rule.

3. Match the value type

Boolean rules require only true or false. Integer rules require a number. A word such as on, a decimal, or a Boolean value supplied to an integer rule will not satisfy the command syntax.

4. Confirm authority

If chat rejects the command, ask an authorized operator to run it or use the dedicated-server console. The server guide documents op <playername> for granting operator privileges. If you cannot access the console, the person who controls the server process must make the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Query the rule again

Run /gamerule in chat or gamerule in the console and check the returned value. If it did not change, treat the setting as unapplied rather than assuming the gameplay effect is delayed.

6. Check version compatibility

Keep clients and the server on compatible Bedrock versions. Microsoft’s dedicated-server guide warns that protocol compatibility can differ between minor versions and even some patch versions. A player who cannot connect, or a command that behaves differently after an update, may indicate a version mismatch rather than a gamerule mistake.

Managing gamerules safely on a shared world

Announce changes that affect player expectations

Tell players before enabling keep inventory, disabling PvP, freezing weather, or changing sleep requirements. These settings alter the server’s social contract: a player who expects normal death drops or a moving day/night cycle may interpret an undocumented change as a bug.

Change one system at a time

Apply a single rule, query it, and test the result before changing another. This isolates mistakes and makes rollback straightforward. For a maintenance window, keep a short text record containing the rule name, old value, new value, date, and administrator.

Use a reversible rollback

Every Boolean example in this guide can be reversed by changing true to false or vice versa. For an integer rule, restore the value recorded before the change. If you did not record it, query the current settings and consult the version-specific reference for the documented default rather than guessing.

Keeping documentation current

Microsoft’s gamerule command reference is marked “Last updated on 2026-04-21.” The Bedrock Dedicated Server getting-started guide carries 2025-05-30 metadata, and the Popular Commands guide carries 2025-04-29 metadata. Rule names, accepted values, and compatibility details can change with Bedrock releases, so check the current command reference after an update, especially before changing integer limits or server automation settings.

The dedicated server is free software, and gamerules require no additional product or hardware purchase. The administrative work is selecting the correct world, using the correct command channel, supplying the correct value type, and verifying the result.

Quick reference checklist

  • Decide whether you are using in-game chat or the dedicated-server console.
  • Use /gamerule in chat and gamerule in the console.
  • Confirm that your account has Game Directors/operator authority.
  • Query the current value before changing it.
  • Use the exact lowercase Bedrock rule name.
  • Enter true/false for Boolean rules and a permitted integer for numeric rules.
  • Query again and test the gameplay effect.
  • Record the change and tell players when it changes how the world works.
  • Check client/server version compatibility after updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I type the slash in the Bedrock Dedicated Server console?

No. Use the slash in in-game chat, but omit it in the dedicated-server console: gamerule dodaylightcycle false.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do gamerules require cheats?

Microsoft’s command reference lists /gamerule as not requiring cheats. You still need the required Game Directors or operator authority.

How do I turn on keep inventory?

Run /gamerule keepinventory true in authorized chat, or gamerule keepinventory true in the server console. Query the rule afterward to verify it.

Why was my gamerule rejected?

Check the command channel, exact lowercase Bedrock spelling, value type, and operator access. Boolean rules require only true or false; integer rules require a number.

How do I stop daylight or weather from changing?

Use /gamerule dodaylightcycle false and /gamerule doweathercycle false. These freeze the current time and weather; they do not select a new time or weather state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between mob griefing and mob spawning?

mobgriefing false prevents mob-driven environmental griefing, while domobspawning false prevents natural spawning. Existing mobs can remain when natural spawning is disabled.

How can I hide command messages completely?

commandblockoutput false hides command-block output, while sendcommandfeedback false suppresses broader command feedback. They are separate controls, so one does not replace the other.

Is Bedrock Dedicated Server software free?

Yes. Microsoft distributes it as a free ZIP package. Gamerules themselves require no additional product or hardware purchase.

How do I undo a gamerule?

Run the same Boolean command with the opposite value, such as /gamerule pvp true. For an integer rule, restore the recorded previous value and query it to confirm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did a rule behave differently after an update?

Check that clients and the server use compatible Bedrock versions. Microsoft warns that protocol compatibility can differ between minor versions and some patch versions; also recheck the current command reference.

The Bottom Line

Use /gamerule with the slash in authorized chat and gamerule without it in the Bedrock Dedicated Server console. Query first, enter the exact lowercase rule with the correct Boolean or integer value, then query and test again. Record and announce changes, and recheck compatibility and documented limits after updates.
