Which Fire TV diagnostic should you use?

Amazon describes the tools in its Network Status tool guidance and 4K troubleshooting instructions. Neither check certifies that every app, stream, subscription, cable, or device will work as expected.

Check Network Status when videos are buffering or Fire TV cannot connect
Network Status separates two links that are easy to confuse: the Wi-Fi connection between Fire TV and the router, and the router’s connection to the internet. Read both results before changing settings. If the device offers a recommendation, follow it and check whether the original symptom changes.
- On an “Unable to Connect” screen, select Network Diagnostics. If that screen is not showing, open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause on the remote.
- Check whether Fire TV is connected to the router and whether the router is connected to the internet.
- On compatible models, look for Run Speed Test or Advanced details. These options are not guaranteed on every device.
A speed test can provide a connection-speed result, but it does not establish that a particular streaming service is free of congestion or that a particular title will play at a given quality. Use Audio/Video Diagnostics for 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision problems
Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics if your Fire TV has the option. Check the reported maximum resolution and refresh rate, HDR or Dolby Vision capability, and supported surround-sound formats against the format you are trying to use.
The result reflects capabilities reported through the HDMI equipment connected to Fire TV. If a TV is connected through an AV receiver or soundbar, that device is part of the HDMI path: it must pass through the desired format for it to reach the TV. If a format is missing, check that each device in the path supports it and that the connections are set up accordingly. Amazon explains these checks in its guides to 4K Ultra HD not working and Dolby Vision or HDR not working.

Why a 4K-capable setup may still play a lower-resolution stream
A positive capability result does not mean every video will play in 4K. The specific content and your subscription plan also need to offer 4K. The diagnostic checks reported equipment capabilities; it does not confirm the source stream’s resolution or plan eligibility.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio and Video Diagnostics > Troubleshoot Audio/Video Issues.
- Select No Audio and follow the on-screen steps.
- If the option is unavailable, or troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, restart Fire TV.

- Review Network Status and act on any recommendation shown.
- Restart Fire TV. If needed, reset or forget the Wi-Fi connection and join the network again.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Use a factory reset only if the earlier steps have not worked.
Amazon also suggests placing Fire TV and the router closer together where possible. For a compatible Wi-Fi 6E Fire TV device, a Wi-Fi 6E-or-higher router may be a consideration; for a larger home, mesh Wi-Fi may help address coverage. These are conditional options, not guaranteed cures for buffering. Check connection status and coverage before considering new equipment.
