To loop lofi music in a YouTube live stream with FFmpeg, repeat a local media input, pace file playback in real time, encode a continuous video-and-audio feed, and send it to the event’s YouTube ingest URL with the stream key. The command below is a starting template—not a tested, universal YouTube profile—so verify FFmpeg options for your installed build and run an unlisted test before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- FFmpeg: installed on a computer that can stay connected for the duration of the stream. Check the installed version and available options with
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -h full. - A media file: the simplest setup is one video file containing both the visual and the lofi audio. If you use separate audio and visual files, you must map the intended streams and test how their durations and loop boundaries interact.
- A YouTube live event: in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an event and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential; keep it private.
- A suitable upload connection: leave capacity for the outgoing stream and allow for normal network fluctuations. Choose a video bitrate that your connection can sustain.
Only stream music and visuals you have the rights to use. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if its content violates YouTube’s copyright rules. Repeating a track does not grant permission to broadcast it.
How do I loop a song in FFmpeg?
For a local file, the commonly used input option is -stream_loop -1, placed before the matching -i. The value -1 requests indefinite looping. Since option support and behavior can vary by FFmpeg build, confirm the syntax in your installed version with ffmpeg -h full before using it for a real broadcast.
When FFmpeg reads a file to supply a live feed, -re paces reading at the file’s native rate—equivalent to -readrate 1—rather than sending the file as fast as possible. It belongs before the file input. Do not apply a low read rate to an input that is already a live capture or stream; doing so can cause packet loss.

Send a looping video file with audio to YouTube
If your video file already includes the lofi track, this schematic command shows the overall workflow:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lofi_visual_with_audio.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
Replace lofi_visual_with_audio.mp4 with your file and replace the output address with the event’s current YouTube stream URL and key. Do not publish the real key in scripts, screenshots, or logs you share.

The command is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a universal profile. In particular, 3000k is an example video bitrate, not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate. The frame rate, encoder preset, output format, bitrate, and GOP values must suit your media, encoder support, upload capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance.
Why the options are placed this way
-reand-stream_loop -1precede the input they affect. FFmpeg options apply according to their position; input options go before their corresponding-i, while output options go before the destination.-c:v libx264selects H.264 video encoding, while-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding. The example requests stereo-compatible audio settings, but confirm the source audio and output in a test.-f flvsets the output container used in this RTMP-style example. Use the ingest URL supplied for the event rather than assuming a fixed server address.-g 60and-keyint_min 60with a 30 fps example express a two-second GOP target. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Match video bitrate to the resolution and frame rate you choose, and check the current recommendations at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Using separate audio and visual files
If your lofi track and visual are separate inputs, use explicit stream mapping so FFmpeg sends the intended video and audio rather than relying on automatic selection. The exact command depends on the files, their codecs, durations, and how you want their loops synchronized; there is no single combined command that is safe to present as guaranteed for every pair of files.
- Check the audio and visual file durations, codecs, and stream contents before building the output.
- Set looping on the relevant file input, with each input option before that input’s
-i. - Map the intended video and audio streams explicitly with
-map. - Test whether both inputs continue together at the loop boundary. A duration mismatch, unsupported codec, timestamp problem, or visual input that ends can stop the output or produce errors.
Validate the composition on your installed FFmpeg version with a short private or unlisted YouTube test before scheduling a long broadcast.

Connect FFmpeg to your YouTube live event
- Prepare the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live event you intend to use.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address the encoder uses to send the feed. Treat it like a password.
- Set the FFmpeg output. Substitute the current event URL and key in the output target, then start the command.
- Check the incoming preview and health information. Confirm that YouTube receives continuous video and audible audio before starting the event, as appropriate for its auto-start configuration.
- Monitor Live Control Room while live. If YouTube reports a format, codec, bitrate, or keyframe-frequency error, correct the encoder settings rather than assuming the warning will clear by itself.
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative moving video and audio, not just a still frame or a silent clip, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance for dashboard error context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects the loop option | The installed build does not support the syntax as entered, or an option is positioned incorrectly. | Check ffmpeg -h full for the installed build and put input options before the corresponding -i. |
| The file plays too quickly or YouTube receives bursts | A local file is being read faster than real time. | Place -re before the local file input. Do not use a low read rate on an already-live capture input. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The event URL or stream key is wrong, or the output target is malformed. | Copy the current URL and key from the selected event and check the FFmpeg output target. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the command. |
| YouTube reports a bitrate, codec, format, or keyframe error | The output does not match the event’s supported settings or current guidance. | Review the encoder settings page, confirm the chosen encoder and output format, use CBR where required, and check the keyframe interval and resolution-appropriate bitrate. |
| Audio or video disappears at a loop boundary | Separate inputs may have mismatched durations, timestamps, or unsupported streams; one input may end. | Inspect the files, map the intended streams explicitly, and reproduce the boundary in a short private or unlisted test before going live. |
| The stream stops after a network interruption | The local process or connection has ended, and the setup has no recovery mechanism. | Check FFmpeg output and network status, then reconnect using the event’s current details. For a long-running stream, consider how you will detect and restart a failed process. |
How long will YouTube archive the stream?
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that statement guarantees a complete archive for a longer broadcast. If keeping the full program matters, check YouTube’s current policy and consider a local recording or segmented events.

Or let it run in the cloud
FFmpeg is a flexible do-it-yourself route, but the computer running it and its internet connection must remain available. StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
