How to Use FFmpeg to Convert Playlist Videos for Smoother OBS YouTube Streaming

Use FFmpeg to join compatible clips or normalize mismatched ones, then play the result in OBS and test the YouTube live path for buffering and boundary problems.

FFmpeg can combine compatible playlist clips into one continuous file without re-encoding, or re-encode clips into a consistent format when their streams differ. Load the finished file in OBS as a Media Source; if you need to keep separate clips and playlist controls, OBS also offers a VLC Video Source, which requires VLC. Neither approach guarantees a smooth YouTube broadcast: check the finished playback in OBS, leave upload-bandwidth headroom, and test the complete stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Choose between one combined file and playlist playback

First decide whether you want a single prepared asset or a list of clips that OBS plays in sequence. FFmpeg is useful for preparing a single file, but it is not required just to play a compatible video in OBS.

Option Best fit What it requires
FFmpeg concat demuxer with stream copy Clips whose streams are compatible and should be joined without re-encoding. Matching stream properties, including codecs and time base; accurate duration information matters at clip boundaries.
FFmpeg concat filter and re-encoding Clips that need their streams normalized to a common target before joining. Deliberate output choices and enough time and compute for encoding; synchronization and boundaries need checking.
OBS Media Source Playing one combined file. The finished media file.
OBS VLC Video Source Playing separate files as a playlist with playlist controls. VLC installed.

Inspect the clips before converting

Use FFmpeg’s ffprobe on each file to inspect its streams, codecs, time base, duration, frame dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. Compare the results before selecting a method. The concat demuxer expects the files to expose matching streams, including codecs and time base. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts at clip boundaries.

Keep the original files until you have checked the output. In particular, note clips with different frame sizes, frame rates, audio layouts, or codecs; they may need normalization rather than stream copy.

Combine compatible clips without re-encoding

For compatible inputs, make a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat with one clip path per line:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'

Run the concat demuxer and copy the compressed streams into a new container:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy combined.mp4

The demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts after the previous file’s duration. Stream copy is fast and avoids generational quality loss from decoding and encoding, but it cannot apply filters or make incompatible streams match. Use -safe 0 only when the list contains paths FFmpeg would otherwise reject as unsafe; keep the playlist and media files under your control.

As the FFmpeg Project documentation puts it, “Streamcopy is useful for changing the elementary stream count, container format, or modifying container-level metadata.” It does not mean that stream copy can normalize codecs or other mismatched stream properties.

Normalize differing clips by re-encoding

If the inputs have incompatible stream properties, normalize them to a common target and then concatenate the normalized outputs, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which is intended for cases that require re-encoding. Choose resolution and frame rate deliberately for the source material and your intended output. Avoid silently changing the aspect ratio; increasing resolution does not restore detail that was absent from the original clip.

There is no single universally suitable CRF, preset, resolution, or bitrate for every source and computer. A filter-based command also depends on the inputs’ stream layout and on correctly mapped and synchronized audio and video, so do not paste a generic filter command without adapting it to those inputs. Re-encoding takes time and compute resources. After encoding, check audio/video synchronization and look at every clip transition for gaps, frozen frames, or other boundary artifacts.

Load the media in OBS

For one combined file

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
  2. Choose the combined output file in the source properties.
  3. Play it through the scene and check that video, audio, and transitions behave as expected.

For separate playlist files

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist controls for the separate clips.
  3. Play through the playlist in the scene, including transitions between clips.

OBS’s File → Remux Recordings feature converts OBS recordings to MP4. Remuxing is not a substitute for normalizing or concatenating arbitrary playlist clips.

Set up and test the YouTube live stream

Use YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance for the encoder settings in OBS. It lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the encoder and the available connection rather than assuming the media file’s playback settings dictate the live output. YouTube can detect encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the incoming live stream for viewer formats.

SSK 128GB Portable SSD External Hard Drive Solid State Drive up to 550MB/s
  • Capacity Reminder: Display capacity of 128GB SSD often appears as around 116GB on Windows. MacOS typically shows full 128GB. This display capacity reduction of 7% to 10% from SSD actual capacity is from algorithms differences in which 1GB is interpreted as 1024MB on Windows and 1000MB on SSDs
  • 550MB/s: Instantly access to your files with blazing 6Gbps external ssd speed up to 550MB/s. LED Light indicates portable ssd instant activity (Actual speed depends on drive capacity, host device, OS and application)
  • Data Security: Master external solid state drives health with S.M.A.R.T. monitoring. TRIM technology ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns during large file transfers. This external ssd remains steady 6Gbps by using high speed SLC caching (25%of the current available capacity is allocated for high speed cache)

Test the entire path before an event: play the source in OBS, start a test stream, and check the live preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Conversion can address file compatibility, but it cannot by itself guarantee smooth streaming.

Leave upload headroom

A local file can play smoothly while the live broadcast buffers if the upstream connection is insufficient or unstable. YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Treat this as upload guidance, not a guarantee against connection interruptions.

Do not confuse upload encoding with live encoding

YouTube’s video-upload recommendations include MP4, H.264, supported audio such as AAC-LC, a 48 kHz sample rate, and retaining the recording’s frame rate. Those recommendations concern video uploads; they are not a universal configuration recipe for an OBS live encoder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a YouTube stream may buffer when the file plays smoothly

  • Upload capacity is too low: Compare the total live-stream bitrate with available upstream bandwidth and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
  • The connection is unreliable: A file’s smooth local playback does not test the upstream connection. Run a test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
  • The clips are not compatible: Stream copy does not normalize differing codecs or time bases. Normalize and re-encode where needed, then check transitions and synchronization.
  • The live encoder configuration needs adjustment: Check the selected codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance and your connection.
  • The problem is in the prepared file: Play the full output in OBS and inspect clip boundaries and audio/video synchronization before diagnosing the live connection.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams videos as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
