FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags can retry certain network failures, but they do not save or restore a playlist cursor. The right fix depends on which connection failed: an HTTP or HLS input, or FFmpeg’s output connection to YouTube Live. If a process restart must resume at the same playlist item, the scheduler or wrapper needs to persist that item and explicitly restore it.
First identify which side of the stream failed
“YouTube live stream” can mean two different workflows: FFmpeg reads a live playlist from a URL, or FFmpeg sends a program assembled from local files to YouTube Live. Find the failing URL in the command: a URL after -i is an input; the destination at the end is generally the output. Reconnect options for an HTTP input do not repair an output-side ingest failure.

The distinction matters because transport recovery and playlist position are separate problems. A retry can restore a connection without knowing which local playlist item should play next. Conversely, an HLS live-start setting chooses where to begin in the current live playlist; it is not a saved cursor for later process restarts.
Use HTTP reconnect options for eligible input failures
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options address connection behavior. The project documentation describes reconnect as reconnecting automatically when disconnected before EOF. The options below apply to an HTTP input when placed before that input’s -i URL:

-reconnect 1retries a disconnect before EOF.-reconnect_streamed 1allows reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable inputs.-reconnect_on_network_error 1retries TCP or TLS errors that occur while establishing a connection.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error and reconnects. Use it only when EOF means the source should continue, not when the input has genuinely ended.-reconnect_on_http_errorcan be configured for HTTP status codes the source may return transiently. Choose statuses deliberately; authentication failures or unavailable resources usually require a fix rather than repeated retries.
Set a retry policy that fits the deployment with -reconnect_delay_max, -reconnect_max_retries and, where supported, -reconnect_delay_total_max. Defaults vary by FFmpeg version. The current implementation reference lists a 120-second maximum reconnect delay, a 256-second total delay maximum and an unset (unlimited) retry count; these are implementation defaults, not guarantees for every packaged binary. Check the installed build’s help and test its behavior before relying on a particular limit.
Schematic HTTP-input example
ffmpeg
-reconnect 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-reconnect_max_retries 20
-i 'https://example.invalid/live.m3u8'
-c copy output.ts
This example configures retries on the HTTP input. It is not a YouTube-tested command or a promise of gapless recovery, and it does not preserve a playlist position. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build recognizes each option.

For HLS input, separate live start from segment retry
When FFmpeg reads an HLS live playlist, use HLS demuxer options for its segment behavior. These controls complement rather than replace HTTP protocol reconnect options:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
live_start_indexselects the segment index where FFmpeg starts in a live playlist. Negative values count backward from the end of the current playlist.prefer_x_start 1makes an HLS playlist’s#EXT-X-STARTtag take precedence overlive_start_index.seg_max_retrysets retries for an errored segment. The documented default is zero retries.
These settings answer different questions: live_start_index concerns initial position in the playlist available now, while seg_max_retry concerns retrying a failed segment rather than skipping it. Neither option guarantees that a segment will remain available after a long interruption.

Preserve playlist position across a process restart
If FFmpeg exits and is started again, a command-line reconnect flag cannot restore the exact position of a local playlist. The application that launches FFmpeg needs to save the current item and decide how to resume. A robust wrapper should track a stable item identity or index, record progress at an appropriate point, and pass the selected item or playlist range into the restarted job.
- Choose a resume policy. Decide whether recovery should continue with the interrupted item, start with the next item, or restart the playlist. These choices trade off repeats against skipped content.
- Persist the state outside FFmpeg. Store the current playlist item or a stable identifier in the scheduler or wrapper, rather than relying on an in-memory process position that disappears on exit.
- Restore deliberately. On restart, have the wrapper construct the input or playlist from the saved item according to the chosen policy. Test how it handles an item that has been removed or changed.
- Validate the outcome. Check a controlled interruption for gaps, duplicates and correct progression. Exact continuation depends on the source, playlist format, FFmpeg build and output pipeline; do not assume a reconnect is seamless.
For an HLS source, a live playlist may have discarded older segments by the time the process returns. If the needed media is no longer in the playlist, exact recovery may be impossible even if the application saved its last media sequence. The available evidence does not establish a YouTube-specific guarantee for resuming an ingest connection at an exact point.

Diagnose the common failure modes
- FFmpeg keeps retrying but the local playlist restarts. Transport retry does not preserve an item index. Save and restore that state in the scheduler or wrapper.
- The input reaches EOF and stops. If the source is intended to be endless, consider
-reconnect_at_eof 1. If it is a finite recording or playlist, EOF may be correct; do not turn it into an endless retry without a reason. - A streamed input does not recover as expected. Consider whether it is non-seekable and whether
-reconnect_streamed 1is appropriate. Recovery still depends on the source and the failure type. - An HLS segment error causes playback to skip ahead. Review
seg_max_retry; its documented default is zero retries. Retrying can delay progress, so select a policy that fits the stream. - The reconnect never succeeds after an HTTP error. Check whether the response indicates expired credentials, an invalid URL or an unavailable resource. Retrying a permanent error does not fix it; use
-reconnect_on_http_errorselectively. - A command works on one machine but rejects an option on another. FFmpeg documentation is rolling and installed builds differ. Inspect the deployed binary’s protocol and HLS demuxer options instead of assuming every package supports the same controls or defaults.
- YouTube stops receiving the output. First determine whether the failure is on FFmpeg’s output/ingest side rather than its input. Input reconnect flags cannot fix that boundary, and the documented options do not establish a YouTube-specific resume guarantee.
