How to Use FFmpeg for a YouTube Loop Stream on a VPS in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop an existing video to YouTube Live from an Indian VPS, install FFmpeg, upload the file, then publish it to the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg can repeat the file indefinitely, but the VPS must sustain the selected bitrate and, if you re-encode, keep up with real time. Start with a short test and verify stream health before leaving it unattended.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux VPS with a supported FFmpeg build, enough sustained CPU for your chosen encoding, and outbound bandwidth that can carry the stream continuously.
  • A video file stored on the VPS. Confirm that you have the rights to stream its audio and video.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and the current RTMPS server address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Reliable upload capacity with headroom above the stream bitrate. Test the VPS route rather than assuming an Indian region or plan will perform adequately.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP through an SSL connection. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the exact combination you plan to use; supported settings and recommended bitrates depend on codec, resolution and frame rate.

Check the file and FFmpeg build

Inspect the media streams

On the VPS, run:

ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4

Check that the file has the video and audio streams you expect, and note their codecs, frame rate, resolution and audio format. A file without audio may need the audio mapping and encoding options removed. If the file contains multiple tracks, choose the intended streams explicitly rather than assuming FFmpeg will select the right ones.

Confirm FFmpeg capabilities

Check the installed version and whether the build includes the encoders and RTMP protocol support your command needs:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
ffmpeg -protocols

Builds differ: an encoder or protocol shown in an example may not be available in your installation. If an encoder is missing, install or build a suitable FFmpeg package for your VPS distribution before starting the broadcast.

Choose resolution, bitrate and encoding

Use the source file’s native quality when practical, and select a YouTube-recommended bitrate for the output format. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include:

Output format Recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed H.264 formats, not universal minimums or guarantees. Its guidance provides separate values for other codecs and formats, so consult the table for the exact output you intend to send.

Re-encode when you need control over output

Re-encoding lets you set a known codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval, but it uses VPS CPU continuously. Keep the output frame rate and resolution within the VPS’s encoding capacity; a process that cannot encode at real-time speed will fall behind or fail to maintain a stable live stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stream-copy only when the source fits

Stream-copying avoids re-encoding and reduces CPU use, but it does not change the source’s codec, resolution, bitrate or keyframe pattern. Use it only if the source streams already match the selected YouTube ingestion requirements and the resulting stream behaves correctly in a test. Otherwise re-encode.

Get the YouTube ingestion details securely

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live broadcast.
  2. Use the server address and stream key supplied in the live setup. Prefer RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository or shared shell history. Pass it through a protected environment variable or another private configuration mechanism.
  4. Check the live setup for any current stream-specific configuration before publishing; do not assume an old server address or key remains valid.

YouTube’s API documentation describes the ingestion details used to connect a broadcast to YouTube Live: YouTube Live Streaming API overview.

Loop and publish with FFmpeg

The following example re-encodes a file to H.264 video and AAC audio, repeats the input, and sends it to an RTMPS URL. Replace the file path, encoding settings and ingestion URL with values appropriate to your file and YouTube live setup. The exact command may need adjustment for your file, FFmpeg build or ingestion configuration.

export YT_RTMPS_URL='rtmps://YOUR_INGESTION_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

ffmpeg
  -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YT_RTMPS_URL"

This sample targets 720p at 30 fps, with an 8 Mbps H.264 video bitrate drawn from YouTube’s recommendation. It does not scale the picture to 720p, so use a source with the intended dimensions or add a suitable video filter after testing. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP produces a two-second keyframe interval. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP to approximately twice the frame rate to retain that interval. The optional audio map permits a file with no audio; remove audio encoding options if you intentionally publish a video-only stream and confirm that configuration works in YouTube Live Control Room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For stream-copying, replace the video and audio codec options with -c:v copy -c:a copy and remove encoding-specific bitrate and keyframe controls. That does not make an incompatible source compliant: inspect the source stream properties and test the result first.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Why the loop and real-time options matter

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -re paces file input approximately in real time. Without pacing, FFmpeg can read a file faster than its playback rate; for a file-to-live workflow, real-time pacing is generally needed.
  • -map selects the video and audio streams explicitly. The question mark on the audio mapping makes that stream optional.
  • -f flv selects the output format commonly used for RTMP-family publishing. Confirm that this matches the ingestion mode and FFmpeg protocol support in your setup.

Test the broadcast before leaving it running

  1. Start FFmpeg while watching its output for connection, encoder or timestamp errors.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health status. Confirm picture, sound, resolution and frame rate.
  3. Let the test run long enough to observe at least one loop transition. Look for pauses, missing audio or a failed reconnect.
  4. Stop the test cleanly, correct any reported issue, then begin the intended broadcast and continue monitoring its health.

YouTube recommends testing with a speed test and monitoring stream health. Available sustained upload capacity must exceed the configured stream bitrate with room for network variation; a brief speed-test result does not prove the VPS route will remain stable continuously.

India-specific VPS checks

An Indian VPS can be convenient for administration or routing, but location alone does not establish adequate performance. Before committing to a provider or plan, verify its current region, sustained CPU allowance, outbound bandwidth and transfer policy, support for a long-running process, and the route to YouTube ingestion. Then test the actual stream from that VPS. No particular Indian provider, price or regional performance is established here.

For continuous re-encoding, confirm the VPS can encode the chosen source at real-time speed for an extended period. If encoding is not needed, a compatible stream-copy setup can reduce compute demand, though the VPS still needs stable upload capacity.

Keep the process running and recover safely

Run FFmpeg in a persistent session manager such as tmux or screen, or configure a service manager to restart it after a process failure. Preserve logs so you can distinguish an FFmpeg error from a VPS restart, network interruption or YouTube-side disconnect. A restarted process may reconnect, but check YouTube Live Control Room after recovery rather than assuming the broadcast is healthy.

Do not expose the stream key in service definitions or logs that other VPS users can read. Restrict access to the account and configuration holding it, and rotate the key in YouTube if it is disclosed.

Troubleshooting

  • FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or protocol: the installed build lacks that component. Check ffmpeg -encoders and ffmpeg -protocols; install a build with the required support.
  • YouTube does not receive a stream: check the current RTMPS address and stream key, outbound connectivity, and whether the FFmpeg output format and protocol match the ingestion mode. Keep the key private while correcting it.
  • Stream health is poor or frames drop: verify sustained VPS upload capacity and CPU load. Lower the output resolution or bitrate to a supported setting, or use a plan capable of sustaining the selected encoding and network load.
  • Audio is missing: inspect the file with ffprobe, confirm the intended audio stream is mapped, and check that the chosen audio encoder is available. A source without audio cannot produce its original audio track.
  • The stream stops at the end of the file: confirm -stream_loop -1 is placed before the input it applies to, and check FFmpeg logs for a read error or an unexpected input-file problem.
  • The loop transition stutters or fails: test the source around its end and beginning, inspect timestamps and stream compatibility, and verify that re-encoding or stream-copying is suitable for that file.
  • The stream disconnects and does not resume: inspect the process and logs, confirm the VPS is still online, and check YouTube’s live status. A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg after a local failure, but cannot guarantee that a YouTube broadcast has recovered.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Only loop material you own or are licensed to broadcast, including the music and any other audio. A video being available online does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and copyright rules before scheduling a long-running stream; repeated playback does not remove rights obligations. Use the copyright safety checklist as a planning aid, not as legal advice.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos looping, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining FFmpeg on your own VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
