concat demuxer

How to Use FFmpeg Concat Files for a Continuous YouTube Livestream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to read a text playlist of compatible media files in sequence, then send that input to YouTube Live through an encoder output. To repeat the playlist, loop the concat input using the option supported by your installed FFmpeg build. This can provide continuous playback, but it does not guarantee gapless transitions or recover a failed broadcast: source compatibility, timing, output settings, and monitoring still matter.

What the concat demuxer does—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a script and presents the listed files in order as though their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so the first file begins at zero and each following file starts where the previous one ends. This is the no-re-encode approach when the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes its behavior and script syntax.

Sequential input is not the same as a guaranteed seamless broadcast. Incompatible media, inaccurate duration estimates, truncated files, or an interrupted FFmpeg process can cause artifacts, gaps, or a stopped stream. Test the actual playlist and output before relying on it.

Prepare a compatible playlist

Build the concat script

Create a UTF-8 plain-text file, for example playlist.ffconcat, with the version line first and one file directive per source:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'intro.mp4'
file 'program-a.mp4'
file 'program-b.mp4'

The exact first line ffconcat version 1.0 enables automatic format recognition. It must be the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. The paths are resolved in relation to the script’s location; use paths appropriate to your operating system and where the playlist is stored. For paths containing special characters, follow FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping syntax rather than assuming ordinary shell quoting rules will work inside the file.

Check the media and timing

For the demuxer approach, files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Check that each clip has the expected audio and video streams and that its format is compatible with the others. A duration estimate that is wrong—such as when a file is truncated—can make later timestamps inaccurate and produce artifacts or gaps.

The optional duration directive can override a file’s stored duration. Use it only when you know the correct duration; guessing may worsen timestamp continuity. If your sources need incompatible codecs, stream layouts, or timing, use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which concatenates while re-encoding, instead of treating the demuxer as a universal fix. See the FFmpeg FAQ on joining video files.

Connect the repeating input to YouTube Live

There is no single FFmpeg command that is guaranteed to work for every playlist and YouTube ingest setup. Looping, real-time pacing, stream-copy eligibility, encoding, container and protocol support, and the selected YouTube ingest route all affect the command. Treat any command assembled for your own setup as a starting template, then test it with your installed FFmpeg version and actual files before using it for a live event.

  1. Choose the YouTube ingest route first. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and use the ingest details shown for that stream. An encoder may ask for a stream URL and stream name separately, or provide a combined destination. Follow the fields your encoder or YouTube setup presents; do not mix instructions for different ingest routes.
  2. Set up the concat input. Point FFmpeg to the script with the concat demuxer (-f concat). Use the installed version’s documented input-loop option to repeat the playlist. Place input options before the input they configure; FFmpeg option placement matters.
  3. Decide whether to copy or encode. Stream copy avoids re-encoding but is appropriate only if the inputs and output route are compatible. If the clips differ in ways that prevent stream copy, choose an encoder and output container supported by the selected YouTube ingest route, and configure encoding for that route rather than assuming one universal codec recipe.
  4. Handle timing deliberately. Pace file input in real time when appropriate for the source and output. Confirm that the chosen loop and pacing options work together in your installed build; inspect FFmpeg’s log output for timestamp, stream, or connection errors.
  5. Protect the stream key. Treat the key as a password. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and shared logs. Use a private environment variable or a local placeholder that you replace securely, rather than publishing a real key in a command.
  6. Test and monitor. Before going live, run representative clips with the same kind of audio and motion as the planned stream. Confirm YouTube receives healthy video and audio, inspect FFmpeg logs, and monitor stream health during the broadcast.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), testing with similar audio and motion before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. It also recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Apply these as YouTube encoder-setting guidance for the chosen ingest path, not as a guarantee that every FFmpeg command or source will work. See YouTube’s encoder settings for live streaming and YouTube Live stream configuration.

Choose between concat, the concat filter, and HLS carefully

Approach Best fit Important limitation
Concat demuxer Sequential files with matching streams, codecs, and time bases when you want to avoid re-encoding. Incorrect durations or incompatible inputs can create artifacts or gaps; it does not itself ensure a resilient broadcast.
Concat filter Joining files that require re-encoding to make their streams compatible. Requires an encoding step rather than the demuxer’s compatible-input, no-re-encode path.
RTMP-style continuous ingest A continuous encoder output using the ingest details configured for the stream. Use the settings and endpoint for the selected YouTube ingest route; do not substitute HLS packaging assumptions.
HLS ingestion A segmented HLS workflow specifically configured for YouTube’s HLS ingest. It has separate segment and rolling-playlist requirements and higher latency than a continuous RTMP-style stream.

YouTube’s HLS instructions are a separate packaging path, not a drop-in variation of a basic RTMP-style output command. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements before choosing it.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg does not recognize the script: check that its first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading space or byte-order mark, and that the file is saved as UTF-8 plain text.
  • A listed file cannot be opened: verify each path from the playlist file’s location, check capitalization and permissions, and correct special-character escaping using FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax.
  • Playback has a gap or timestamp artifact at a transition: confirm the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases match. Check for truncation or inaccurate stored durations; provide an explicit duration only if you know the correct value.
  • The stream stops instead of repeating: verify the concat input loop option against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and confirm it is positioned as an input option. Review logs to distinguish loop behavior from a source-read or output-connection failure.
  • YouTube does not receive healthy audio or video: test the actual source streams and output settings, check that the encoder is using the configured ingest destination and key, and verify the selected container/protocol and encoding are accepted by that route.
  • Connection is unstable or stream health degrades: inspect the local network and FFmpeg logs, verify the output settings against YouTube’s guidance, and monitor the live health indicators. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted transport where that route is used.
