You can use FaceTime on iPhone without Wi-Fi, as long as the phone has a working cellular data connection and FaceTime is allowed to use it. You still need some internet connection on both ends, and cellular data charges may apply under your plan.
Turn FaceTime on first
FaceTime is switched on in Settings, and calls are started from the FaceTime app. Apple’s guidance for setting it up on iPhone is in its Get started with FaceTime on iPhone page.

Start a FaceTime call
Apple’s step-by-step instructions for making calls are in its Make FaceTime calls on iPhone guide, which is the current iPhone User Guide for iOS 27.
- Open the FaceTime app.
- Tap New Call.
- Type a name, phone number, or email address. If a suggested contact appears and it is the right person, select it.
- Tap FaceTime for a video call, or the audio-call control for an audio call.
You can also start a call from an iMessage conversation. The conversation has FaceTime Audio and FaceTime Video options.

Does FaceTime need Wi-Fi?
No, Wi-Fi is not mandatory. What matters is that your iPhone and the other person’s device each have a usable internet connection. Your options are:
| Connection | Can you place a FaceTime call? | Conditions and costs |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Yes | Apple says FaceTime over Wi-Fi requires broadband. No minimum speed is given in Apple’s cited troubleshooting guidance. |
| Cellular data | Yes, on a supported iPhone with cellular data enabled for FaceTime | Data charges may apply under your plan. Whether your carrier or country supports it is not stated by Apple’s guidance; check with your carrier. |
| No internet connection | No | Apple states that you need a cellular or Wi-Fi connection to make or receive a FaceTime call on iPhone or iPad. |
Apple’s wording, from its troubleshooting page for FaceTime calls, is short: you need a cellular or Wi-Fi connection to use FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad. A second copy of the same page, dated September 16, 2024, is published for European users.

Cellular data, charges, and call quality
If you are on mobile data, check that FaceTime is permitted to use cellular data before you call. Calls over cellular use your plan’s data allowance, so video calls can use more of it than audio calls, and charges depend entirely on your plan. Apple’s guidance does not give a data-usage figure per minute, so check your carrier’s terms for that.
Call quality depends on the connection at both ends. Apple recommends that both callers use a fast Wi-Fi or cellular connection. A weak signal, slow connection, or heavy use of a shared Wi-Fi network can cause connection alerts, choppy video, a black screen, or dropped calls.

If FaceTime calls fail
Work through these checks in order. Apple’s troubleshooting page covers the same ground in more detail.
- FaceTime is turned on: confirm it in Settings under Apps, then FaceTime.
- The right line and contact method are selected: check the entries under “You can be reached by FaceTime at.”
- Cellular data is allowed for FaceTime: needed when you are not on Wi-Fi.
- The connection works: open a web page or try the other network to confirm you have internet access.
- Screen Time restrictions are not blocking FaceTime: check your Screen Time settings.
- Date and time are automatic: incorrect time settings can interfere with calls.
- Software is up to date: install any pending iOS update.
- Restart the iPhone: this sometimes clears a stuck call.
Feature availability varies by country, region, and carrier. Apple’s guidance does not list which carriers or countries lack FaceTime support, so if calls fail on a cellular connection despite these checks, contact your carrier.
