To use an effect in Premiere Pro, find it in Window > Effects, drag it onto a clip in the Timeline, then select the clip and adjust the effect in Effect Controls. You can animate many effect settings with keyframes and reuse saved settings with presets.
Apply an effect to a clip
- Create a sequence in the Timeline and select the video or audio clip you want to change.
- Choose Window > Effects to open the Effects panel. Browse its categories or search for an effect by name.
- Drag the effect from the panel onto the clip in the Timeline.
- Play the clip to review the result. Select the clip and open Effect Controls to customize the applied effect. Adobe’s effect application instructions describe this workflow.
For audio clips, the track must not be displaying Show Track Volume or Show Track Keyframes when you apply an audio effect; Adobe notes that these track display modes prevent audio effects from being applied.

Adjust effect settings in Effect Controls
With the clip selected, Effect Controls shows its applied effects. Expand an effect or property group to reveal its controls. Depending on the control, adjust a value by dragging its underlined number, selecting it and typing a value, or using its slider or angle control. See Adobe’s instructions for adjusting effects.

You can change the order of standard effects in Effect Controls, which can change how they affect the image or sound. Built-in Motion, Opacity, Time Remapping and Volume remain in a fixed order; they cannot be reordered with standard effects. Adobe documents the distinction in its applied effects panel guide.

Use Reset carefully on a property that has keyframes. Adobe warns that resetting a keyframed property can affect its value at the current time and create a keyframe there if one does not already exist.
Animate an effect with keyframes
- In Effect Controls, locate the property you want to animate and turn on its animation control.
- Move the playhead to the time where the change should begin and set the property’s first value. Premiere creates a keyframe for that value.
- Move the playhead to another time and set a different value. The second keyframe defines the end of the change; Premiere interpolates the values between keyframes.
- Review the result by playing the clip. Inspect or edit keyframes in Effect Controls or in the Timeline.
Adobe’s keyframes overview explains the process. A single keyframe sets a value at a time; two or more values are needed to create a change over time.

Choose how the change progresses
| Interpolation | What it does | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Changes at a steady rate between keyframes. | Use it when you want a consistent progression. |
| Bezier | Allows the rate of change to accelerate or decelerate. | Use it when you want easing rather than a uniform rate. |
Interpolation options vary by effect: Adobe notes that temporal interpolation is available only for some effects, while spatial interpolation applies to keyframes of many effects. Its keyframe interpolation guide explains the distinction.

If a clip has many controls, filter Effect Controls to display all properties, only properties with keyframes, or only properties you have edited. This can make it easier to find the setting you need without changing the effect itself. See Adobe’s Effect Controls filtering instructions.
