The first row names the attributes to import; each following row describes an object, and its distinguished name (DN) specifies where that object belongs. CSVDE cannot set user passwords, so password provisioning needs a separate secure workflow.
Prepare the CSV file
CSVDE reads comma-separated columns whose first line names the directory attributes. Each subsequent line supplies values for one object. Microsoft describes the format as compatible with Microsoft Excel CSV and supporting Unicode. In each row, the object’s dn identifies its location in the directory, including the container or OU path.

This simplified user example follows the structure of Microsoft’s documented sample:
objectClass,dn,sAMAccountName,userPrincipalName,userAccountControl
user,"CN=KMyer,CN=Users,DC=cpandl,DC=com",KenM,[email protected],514The domain components in this example are illustrative; replace them with the distinguished name for your own directory. To place an object in an OU rather than the default Users container, its row’s DN must name the intended OU path.

CSVDE uses the header to associate values with attributes; do not rely on an export to preserve a preferred column order. Microsoft’s command reference notes that LDAP may return attributes in any order and CSVDE does not impose one. See Microsoft’s CSVDE command reference and CSV script format documentation.
Run the import
- Save the prepared data as a CSV file, for example
input.csv. - Open a command prompt on a system where CSVDE is available and run
csvde -i -f input.csv. - Review the command output and any log information, then verify that the objects exist in the intended directory locations.
The -i option selects import mode. Without it, CSVDE defaults to export. The -f option specifies the file. Microsoft’s documented basic import form is csvde -i -f input.csv.

-sspecifies a domain controller.-jsets a log-file path.-venables verbose output.-kcontinues past a limited set of errors, including an already-existing object, a constraint violation, or an already-existing attribute/value. It does not make all import errors harmless.
Handle user passwords separately
CSVDE cannot import user passwords. Microsoft explains in its CSVDE command reference: “You cannot import user passwords by using csvde because passwords must be sent over an encrypted channel.” Use an appropriate secure password-provisioning workflow instead of placing passwords in the CSV.
The sample’s userAccountControl value of 514 disables that user account. Microsoft recommends disabling accounts in this situation because CSVDE cannot set passwords. Treat 514 as the behavior of the documented example, not as a universal account policy; apply the account state and activation process your environment requires.

Importing contacts requires contact-specific attributes
CSVDE imports directory objects using specified object classes and attributes, but Microsoft’s cited CSVDE example is for a user, not a contact. Do not reuse the user row as a contact template. Before building contact rows, confirm the contact object class and required attributes against authoritative schema or product documentation for the target directory. The exact columns depend on those requirements.
Choose CSVDE or LDIFDE for the file and operation

CSVDE is a natural fit for row-oriented CSV data. LDIFDE may fit a workflow where the file explicitly represents LDIF change types. This is a format and operation distinction, not a claim that one utility is universally better. Compare the required object attributes with the target directory’s schema and validate the operation’s constraints in that environment. Check version and environment requirements
The Microsoft CSVDE command reference is a previous-version page last updated in 2016 and lists Windows Server 2008-era through Windows Server 2012 applicability; the CSV script-format guidance is older Win32 documentation. These sources describe the syntax and examples above, but do not provide a current Windows Server release-by-release support matrix or a full import permission model. Confirm CSVDE availability, required privileges, schema requirements, and behavior on the specific server and directory you will use.
