You can add a specific Doc to an individual chat or a private Project. To limit what you share, choose only the document your task requires, review Google’s authorization screen, check the file’s Drive sharing settings, and disconnect the integration when you no longer need it.
What Claude can do with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic’s Google Drive integration, which its help page lists for paid Claude.ai plans, can sync a Google Doc to Claude. It does not support syncing Google Sheets or Slides through this integration. Anthropic marks Claude.ai integrations as beta, so availability and details may change.

Claude extracts text from a supported Doc; it does not interpret images or read comments or suggested edits. The documented maximum file size is 10 MB. Do not assume Claude will understand spreadsheet formulas, charts, slide layouts, or embedded media via this workflow. See Anthropic’s Google Drive integration instructions for current details.
Add one Google Doc to Claude
In an individual chat
- Open a Claude chat and choose Add from Google Drive from the plus menu.
- If prompted, sign in to Google and review the authorization screen before granting access.
- Select a recent Doc or paste the URL of the Doc you need. You can sync only documents you have permission to view in Drive.
Anthropic says a connected Doc stays synced to its latest Drive version. The documented file-selection flow lets you choose a document, but Anthropic’s article does not state the integration’s exact OAuth scopes. Do not interpret selecting one Doc as proof that the underlying connection is technically limited to that file.

In a Project
The integration is available for private Projects. Open the Project’s knowledge area, choose Add Content, and add the Doc there. If the material is needed for just one task, attaching it to a chat instead avoids placing it in a Project’s knowledge base.
Reduce the amount of Drive data you expose
- Choose the file first. Decide which Doc Claude needs, then add only that document rather than using a broadly shared folder as a shortcut.
- Minimize sensitive content. If the task permits, make a copy with unnecessary sensitive passages removed and add that copy instead.
- Read Google’s consent screen. Google says its authorization flow identifies the services and level of data access a third-party app requests. Check the screen and the app developer’s privacy policy before authorizing. Google also says the developer’s retention policy determines how long the app retains data. See Google’s explanation of third-party access to your Google Account.
- Keep Drive sharing narrow. Selecting a Doc for Claude and controlling who can access that Doc in Drive are separate decisions. A user connecting Claude must be able to view the Doc; the cited documentation does not say that setting it to Restricted prevents that user from adding it to Claude.
Check the Doc’s Drive sharing settings
Google says new Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Vids files are Restricted by default, but it is still worth checking the file’s Share dialog. Under General access, Restricted limits access to specified accounts; link or organization access can expose a file more broadly. Drive access may also be inherited from a parent folder. Google describes the available Viewer, Commenter, and Editor roles in its file and folder sharing guidance.

If people who can access a parent folder should not all have access to a particular file, Google recommends using a limited-access subfolder and sharing it only with those who need it. See Google’s guidance on limited-access folders. A file’s Drive sharing setting controls access in Drive; it is not a substitute for reviewing the separate consent screen for Claude.

- In Claude, open Settings > Integrations, find Google Drive, and disconnect it.
- If you also want to remove the linked-app connection in Google, open Google Account connections, find Claude for Google Drive, and delete the connection.
Anthropic says that if you lose access to a Doc, its preview is removed from earlier conversations, while conversation history remains. Its instructions do not say that disconnecting Drive deletes content already present in chat history. See Anthropic’s integration and troubleshooting guidance.

Understand which provider’s privacy terms apply
Google’s statements about Workspace content concern Google’s handling of that content. Google says it does not scan private Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids, or Drive content to train foundational AI models, including Gemini, and does not use Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Vids content for advertising. Those statements do not determine how Anthropic handles information you submit to Claude. See Google Workspace’s AI privacy and security information.
Anthropic’s cited no-training statement applies to Claude for Work Team and Enterprise: it says the customer controls submitted user data, Anthropic processes it on the customer’s instructions, and Anthropic does not use it to train generative models. That statement should not be generalized to Claude Free, Pro, Max, or other products. For sensitive information, check the terms for your specific Claude plan and follow your employer’s data-handling rules. See Anthropic’s commercial terms.
