Those instructions apply to every chat in the project, while individual chat histories are not automatically shared with other chats. Projects are currently available on paid Claude plans, according to Anthropic’s Projects documentation.
When a Claude Project is useful
A Project is a good fit when you return to the same body of work, use a stable set of source material, or repeat tasks with the same rules. Examples include researching a product, maintaining documentation, or drafting content for a particular audience. Keep separate tasks in separate chats within the Project, and store context that needs to carry across those chats in project knowledge or instructions.

A Project is less useful for a one-off question with no reusable sources or process. For a preference you want Claude to follow everywhere, use a profile preference instead of copying it into every Project.
Create a project
- Open Projects in Claude and select + New Project.
- Enter a recognizable project name and description, then create the Project.
Use the name and description to organize the Projects list for yourself. Anthropic says Claude does not receive those fields as context, so put essential background and directions in project knowledge or Project instructions instead. See Anthropic’s project setup guide for the current interface.

Add material Claude should use across chats
Open the Project’s knowledge area and add the reference documents, text, or code snippets that should inform multiple conversations. Project knowledge is shared context for chats in that Project. By contrast, do not assume that a fact mentioned only in one chat will be available in another. If a decision or finding needs to carry forward, add it to project knowledge or summarize it in a new chat.
Anthropic lists PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON, and XLSX files (XLSX with the analysis tool enabled) as supported for project knowledge. Its help page specifies a 30 MB per-file limit; total content must also fit within Claude’s context window, with additional token limits based on extracted text. For PDFs uploaded to chats or projects, the documentation says Claude 4 models, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet can analyze text and visual elements in files under 100 pages. For longer PDFs or other listed models, processing is text-only. These limits and model names can change; consult Anthropic’s current file-upload guidance if a file is rejected or its diagrams are not interpreted.

Write reusable Project instructions
- Open the Project and select Set project instructions.
- Describe the recurring task and who the output is for.
- Specify repeatable rules: preferred terminology, sources to prioritize, output format, and constraints that matter for this work.
- Save the instructions, then start a chat in the Project to use them.
Anthropic states: “Claude will use these instructions for all the chats within the project.” Keep guidance concise and testable—for example, name the intended audience and request a short summary followed by a list of open questions. This is a way to communicate your expectations, not a guarantee that every response will follow them perfectly.

| Option | Scope | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Profile preferences | Across conversations | Defaults you want Claude to apply generally. |
| Project instructions | Chats in one Project | That workstream’s background, task rules, terminology, and constraints. |
| Styles | How a response is presented | Tone and response format. |
Choose the narrowest scope that fits: general preferences for account-wide defaults, Project instructions for a recurring workstream, and a Style for how an answer should read.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand retrieval and growing project knowledge
Anthropic says retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can turn on automatically as project knowledge approaches context limits. Rather than loading all project content at once, it retrieves relevant information from uploaded documents. Anthropic says this can expand project knowledge capacity “by up to 10x”; that is the vendor’s product claim, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every relevant detail will be retrieved for every response. If Claude shows a RAG indicator, it signals that retrieval is active. Details are in Anthropic’s explanation of large Projects and its Projects overview.

Share a Project with a team
Team and Enterprise users can have private Projects or share them with selected members or, where enabled, their organization. Available permissions include Can use and Can edit. Organization-wide sharing depends on administrator settings. Sharing a Project’s knowledge base does not automatically share its creator’s chats; chats must be shared separately if collaborators need them. Check Anthropic’s project-sharing guide for the controls available to your organization.
Plan for usage and limits
Message usage varies by plan and can also depend on message length, attachments, conversation length, tools, model choice, and artifact use. Anthropic describes caching for reused project content, but does not promise a fixed number of extra messages or a specific quota reduction. For current usage details, see Anthropic’s usage guidance.
