You can route a coding client to multiple AI model providers through one API interface—but that does not automatically combine your existing subscriptions or prove you will spend less. A self-hosted LiteLLM gateway can sit between a compatible coding client and provider APIs; OpenRouter offers a hosted alternative. The client, protocol support, provider credentials, and billing arrangement still determine what works.
How one setup can reach multiple models
The arrangement has three parts: a coding client, a gateway or hosted model-routing endpoint, and the models available behind it. Instead of configuring the coding client to contact each provider directly, you configure it to send requests to the gateway. The gateway routes those requests to providers or, where configured, a local inference endpoint.

- Choose a coding client. It must support the endpoint protocol and custom model configuration you plan to use.
- Choose where routing happens. You can operate a LiteLLM gateway yourself or use a hosted API such as OpenRouter.
- Configure models and credentials. The gateway or service needs access to the upstream models, and the client needs model names or aliases that its configuration recognizes.
LiteLLM describes a unified interface for 100+ model providers and gives examples spanning OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex AI Gemini, and Ollama at a local endpoint. That is LiteLLM’s product description, not an independent compatibility test or a promise that every model works with every coding client. See LiteLLM’s getting-started documentation.

| Consideration | Self-hosted LiteLLM gateway | OpenRouter hosted API |
|---|---|---|
| Where routing runs | On infrastructure you operate. | Through OpenRouter’s hosted service. |
| Provider credentials | In the ordinary gateway flow, upstream provider credentials are configured at the gateway; the coding client authenticates to the gateway. | The client is configured to use OpenRouter’s API endpoint. The quickstart describes the endpoint and SDK setup; verify current account and provider requirements in its documentation. |
| Model range | LiteLLM documents a unified interface for 100+ providers; actual availability depends on your configuration and client compatibility. | OpenRouter describes one endpoint for hundreds of models. |
| Fallbacks and controls | LiteLLM documents retry and fallback routing, plus gateway features such as virtual keys, cost tracking, budgets, and an admin interface. | OpenRouter documents automatic fallbacks. |
| Operational work | You are responsible for running and configuring the gateway and handling its credentials and access. | You use a hosted service rather than operating this gateway yourself. |
| Billing relationship | The standard gateway flow uses configured provider credentials; use of a personal Claude or ChatGPT subscription is a separate opt-in setup, not the default. | Do not assume the hosted endpoint includes or replaces a provider subscription; check current account and model billing terms. |
OpenRouter’s official quickstart describes its hosted endpoint, model access, automatic fallback, and an OpenAI SDK option using a custom base URL. Neither service’s documentation establishes that it is cheaper for a particular person’s workload.
One endpoint does not mean one subscription
In the standard LiteLLM gateway flow, the client sends a request to the gateway, and the gateway calls the upstream provider using credentials configured in its model list. That is different from signing into a coding tool with a consumer subscription: LiteLLM documents personal Claude or ChatGPT subscription billing as a separate opt-in setup. Confirm the applicable provider and gateway terms before configuring credentials.

A unified API surface can simplify client configuration, but costs still depend on the billing path, models selected, and usage. Without bills and usage records from a specific setup, there is no sound basis for claiming a particular dollar or percentage saving.
Check your coding client’s protocol before configuring it
“OpenAI-compatible” is not a guarantee that every feature behaves identically across clients and providers. LiteLLM’s client documentation identifies Claude Code with the Anthropic Messages endpoint and Codex with OpenAI Responses, and notes that translation and feature support can differ by route. Check the current compatibility guidance for your exact client and model before relying on a route for a workflow.

Claude Code
LiteLLM documents Claude Code as using the Anthropic Messages protocol. A route that depends on translating another provider’s API into that protocol may have feature-specific constraints; confirm the supported features for the route you intend to use in the LiteLLM Claude Code guidance.
Codex
LiteLLM documents Codex with OpenAI Responses. Codex also uses model-catalog metadata to determine how models are presented and handled. Custom names may need catalog entries; an unknown alias can receive generic fallback metadata, and catalog size and caching affect behavior. Use the current LiteLLM Codex guidance and Codex model catalog documentation when configuring aliases; do not assume that a model name accepted by the gateway will automatically appear or behave as expected in the client.

A practical setup checklist
- Pick the client and its protocol. Identify whether it expects Anthropic Messages, OpenAI Responses, or another interface, and check the gateway’s current support for that combination.
- Choose self-hosted or hosted routing. Use LiteLLM if you want to operate and configure a gateway; consider OpenRouter if you prefer a hosted endpoint. Compare current terms and requirements rather than assuming one costs less.
- Set up the upstream models. Add the cloud provider credentials or local endpoint needed for the models you want to call. LiteLLM’s getting-started documentation includes an Ollama localhost example, but that example does not establish what hardware a particular local model requires.
- Configure the coding client’s endpoint and model names. Point it to the gateway or hosted endpoint, then use aliases and catalog metadata appropriate to that client. For Codex, check catalog handling of custom names.
- Test each route independently. Verify that a simple request reaches the intended model and that the coding features you rely on work. Test fallbacks separately; a configured fallback is not proof that every route supports every feature.
- Review access and spend controls. Keep credentials in the intended component, restrict gateway access, and use available usage tracking or budgets. LiteLLM documents virtual keys, cost tracking, budgets, and guardrails as gateway capabilities; their presence does not itself guarantee lower spend.
What this setup does—and does not—establish
A gateway or hosted router can give a compatible coding client a common place to send requests for multiple providers, including cloud and local endpoints when configured. It can reduce the need to switch endpoint configurations, and routing features may help manage retries or fallbacks. It does not establish that one consumer subscription covers all providers, that every model is feature-equivalent, or that a particular user saved money.
Before choosing, assess the parts that depend on your situation: whether the coding client supports the required protocol, where credentials are held, which models and features are available, how usage is billed, and what operational or privacy requirements apply. Vendor documentation establishes the described product capabilities; it does not provide a controlled comparison of latency, privacy, price, or model quality.
