Chunky pre-generates Minecraft Java terrain on the server before players travel there. Install the build that matches your server platform, select a world and a bounded shape, set its center and radius in blocks, then run chunky start. You can watch the job with chunky progress, pause it safely, resume it later, or cancel it if the workload is too heavy.

What Chunky does
Chunky is a server-side pre-generation mod or plugin for Minecraft Java server platforms. Instead of waiting for the server to create terrain as players explore, you ask Chunky to process a defined selection in advance. Players can then enter that prepared area without triggering the same initial terrain-generation workload during play.
The selection is described by a shape, a center and a radius. Radius values are measured in blocks, not chunks. The chosen shape determines which blocks around the center are included. A square and a circle with the same center and radius therefore produce different boundaries and different amounts of work.

Chunky does not remove the need for CPU time or disk space. It moves the terrain-generation work to a deliberate task that you can schedule, observe and stop. A small, clearly bounded selection is easier to estimate and less disruptive than attempting to prepare an unbounded world.
Before you start
Use the build for your server platform
Install the Chunky build that matches the platform running the world:
Recommended Free Tools
- Fabric
- Forge
- NeoForge
- Paper
Do not assume that a file for one platform will load on another. Place the platform-appropriate build where that platform expects server mods or plugins, then restart the server so it can load Chunky.
Confirm command access
After the server starts, run:
chunky
A help menu should appear. If it does not, check that the correct build was installed, the server was restarted, the command was entered in the server console or chat correctly, and your account has permission to use it. Dedicated-server users generally need operator permission. In single-player, cheats may need to be enabled, depending on the Minecraft and Chunky versions in use.
Decide what you are preparing
Choose the world and playable area before starting. Write down the intended dimension, center, shape and radius. If your server already uses a vanilla world border to define where players may play, importing that border is usually less error-prone than measuring a second selection manually.
The basic Chunky workflow
For a normal manual selection, follow this sequence. You can omit a selection command only when the current Chunky settings already point at the intended world, shape, center and radius; explicitly setting them is safer when preparing a new task.
- Select the world. Use
chunky world <world>with the server’s exact world name. - Choose the shape. For example, run
chunky shape squareorchunky shape circle. - Set the center. Run
chunky center <x> <z>. If the selection should begin at the world’s default spawn, usechunky spawninstead. - Set the radius in blocks. For example,
chunky radius 5000. - Start the task. Run
chunky start. - Observe the task. Use
chunky progressbefore deciding whether to leave it running, pause it or cancel it.
The concise project-guide example is:
chunky radius 5000
chunky start
Those commands use the currently selected world, shape and center, then set a 5,000-block radius and start generation. If any of those earlier settings are wrong or stale, the job will target the wrong area, so set them explicitly when in doubt.

How to choose a shape, center and radius
Square selections
A square is straightforward when your server’s playable region is organized on X and Z boundaries. Set the world, choose square, specify the center and enter the block radius. The direct form documented by the project is:
chunky start world square 0 0 1000
This starts a square selection in the world named world, centered at X 0 and Z 0, with a 1,000-block radius. Replace the world name and coordinates with values from your server; do not treat those numbers as universal defaults.
Circle selections
A circle is useful when the intended playable area should remain an even distance from a central point in every direction. Set it with:
chunky shape circle
Then set the center or use chunky spawn, enter the radius and start the task. With the same radius, a circle excludes the square’s corners, so it generally asks Chunky to prepare a different area. Select the shape that matches the boundary you want players to reach, rather than choosing one based only on which command is shorter.
Radius is a block distance
Use a value such as 1000 or 5000 as a block radius. Do not append a chunk conversion or assume that the value means “number of chunks.” The generated area is bounded by the selected shape and that block radius. Increasing the radius expands the work in every direction, so a seemingly modest increase can create a substantially larger task.
Centering on spawn
Run chunky spawn when the default spawn point should be the center. This avoids manually copying coordinates and is convenient for a lobby or survival area built outward from spawn. Verify that the selected world is the one whose spawn you intend to use before starting.
Using Minecraft’s world border
If the playable area is already defined by the vanilla world border, set or confirm that border first in the selected world. Then run:

chunky worldborder
chunky start
chunky worldborder imports the center and radius from the active border of the currently selected world. Chunky then uses that imported selection when you start the task. This workflow is particularly useful on hosted servers or established survival worlds where the border is already the rule players must follow.
World-border checklist
- Select the intended dimension with
chunky world <world>. - Confirm that the vanilla border in that dimension has the desired center and size.
- Run
chunky worldborder. - Use
chunky progressafter starting to confirm that the task is processing the expected location.
Do not import the border while another dimension is selected and assume the result applies globally. Dimensions can have different borders and different playable areas.
Pre-generating another dimension
Nether, End and other dimensions should be selected explicitly. Dimension names vary with the server setup and Minecraft version, so use the exact name exposed by your server. A Nether example is:
chunky world the_nether
chunky shape circle
chunky spawn
chunky radius 1000
chunky start
This selects the_nether, chooses a circle centered on that dimension’s spawn, sets a 1,000-block block radius and starts generation. Repeat the same shape, center and radius decisions independently for each dimension. A radius that is sensible for the Overworld may be excessive or unnecessary in the Nether or End.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMonitoring a running task
Run:
chunky progress
The status output reports the processed count, percentage, estimated time remaining, generation rate and current location. These values let you decide whether the job is progressing as expected without guessing from server activity alone.
Use the estimate as an operational signal
The ETA and rate are useful for scheduling, not a guarantee of completion at an exact time. Generation speed can vary with server load and the work being performed. Watch the trend after the task has begun, and avoid promising players that a large selection will finish by a particular time unless you have allowed substantial margin.
Pause for player activity
Run:
chunky pause
Chunky saves progress when it pauses. This is the appropriate control when players need the server’s CPU or when you are approaching a busy period. Resume the saved task later with:

chunky continue
Pausing is preferable to starting a second overlapping task with a different selection. Keep a note of which world and selection you paused so that a later administrator understands what will resume.
Cancel when the plan changes
Run:
chunky cancel
Cancel a task when the selection is wrong, the workload is too disruptive or the preparation plan has changed. Review the world, shape, center and radius before starting a replacement. A canceled job should not be treated as a completed selection.
Be cautious with trim
chunky trim removes chunks outside the current selection. It is a destructive maintenance operation, not a way to make an active generation job faster. Verify the selected world and every selection parameter before using it, and ensure that anything outside the boundary is genuinely disposable. A mistaken trim can remove terrain that players or administrators expected to keep.
Planning CPU time, storage and scheduling
Pre-generation trades unpredictable terrain work during exploration for a deliberate background task. A large selection can consume substantial CPU time and disk space. The right radius is therefore the area players are expected to use, not the largest number the server accepts.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with a bounded area
- Define the playable boundary first, using a world border where appropriate.
- Choose a radius that covers planned activity rather than speculative future expansion.
- Prefer a smaller first task that you can observe before committing to a much larger one.
- Check that the server has enough free storage for newly generated terrain and its normal operation.
Schedule around players
Run heavy generation when player activity is low. Use chunky progress to watch the rate and ETA, then pause with chunky pause if the job competes with active play. Resume during another quiet period with chunky continue.
Consider map output
The project guide notes that map plugins may be worth disabling temporarily during generation to improve speed and map output. If you do this, document the change, follow the plugin’s own safe-disable procedure and restore it after the generation window. Do not remove a plugin blindly on a live world.
Keep an administrative record
For each task, record the dimension, shape, center, radius, start time and whether it completed or was paused. This prevents an administrator from accidentally resuming an old selection or preparing a different area than the one described to players.

Common problems and fixes
The chunky command is unknown
- Confirm that the installed build matches Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Paper.
- Restart the server after installing the mod or plugin.
- Run
chunkyfrom the server console to separate a command-registration issue from an in-game permission issue. - Check that your account is an operator on a dedicated server, or that cheats are enabled in single-player when the version requires them.
The task is generating the wrong world
Run chunky world <world> again with the exact server world or dimension name. Then explicitly reset the shape, center or radius before starting. A previous selection can remain active, so do not rely on remembered settings when changing dimensions.
The boundary is not what you expected
Check whether you selected square or circle, and remember that the radius is in blocks. If you intended to follow the vanilla border, select the correct world first and run chunky worldborder rather than entering a separate manual radius.
Generation is too disruptive
Use chunky progress to inspect the current rate and ETA. If players need the server, run chunky pause and resume later. Reduce the scope of a future task by selecting a smaller bounded area. Scheduling and selection size are usually safer fixes than allowing an oversized job to compete continuously with live play.
You need to stop and rethink the task
Run chunky cancel, verify the intended world and boundary, and start again only after the selection is correct. If you are considering deleting anything outside a boundary, stop and review chunky trim separately because it removes chunks and is not reversible through ordinary task controls.

Prepare a Nether area, then pause
chunky world the_nether
chunky shape circle
chunky spawn
chunky radius 1000
chunky start
chunky progress
chunky pause
When resources are available again, run chunky continue to resume the saved task.
Pre-generation checklist
- Is the Chunky build matched to Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Paper?
- Did
chunkydisplay the help menu after restart? - Do you have operator or other required command permission?
- Is the correct world or dimension selected?
- Are the shape, center and block radius written down?
- If using a border, did you import it while the intended world was selected?
- Is there enough CPU headroom and disk space?
- Have you scheduled the job for a low-activity period?
- Do you know how to check
chunky progress, pause, continue and cancel? - Have you verified the selection before considering
chunky trim?
Bottom line
Use Chunky as a controlled server task: select the exact world, define a square, circle or imported world-border area, set a radius in blocks, start it and watch the reported progress. Pause and resume when player activity requires it, and keep large jobs bounded by realistic CPU and storage limits. That workflow prepares terrain before exploration without turning an oversized generation request into an avoidable live-server problem.
