Use Chromium’s headless mode with the --screenshot flag to save a webpage as an image. Choose a window size that matches the thumbnail’s intended context, then review the result: the size affects which page layout appears and how much content fits in the image. The documented dimensions below are examples, not an India-specific standard. The same workflow applies in India; the sources cited here do not establish a separate Indian technical or regulatory requirement.
Make a website thumbnail with Chromium
Run Chromium or Chrome in the environment where you want the image saved. In a terminal, use the browser executable name installed on your system; the examples below use chrome. The output file is written to the current working directory.

- Open a terminal in the environment where Chromium is available.
- Capture the page: replace the example URL with the page you want to represent.

screenshot.pngin the current directory. If the image should show a different layout or composition, adjust the window size and capture again.
Chrome’s command-line documentation demonstrates --screenshot and the 1280×1696 window-size example. The screenshot filename in the documented basic example is screenshot.png. Use the executable name available in your installation: it may differ from chrome.
Choose the thumbnail’s dimensions and view
Match the viewport to the intended layout
A screenshot renders the page at a particular browser window size. That size can change the site’s responsive layout, so use a width and height that resemble the place the thumbnail will be seen or the device context it should represent. Chrome’s documentation also shows --window-size=412,732 as a mobile-sized example. Neither that size nor 1280×1696 is a universal thumbnail recommendation.

If readers need to see both narrow and wide versions of a site, capture them separately. A single viewport cannot show two responsive layouts at once. The Web App Manifest screenshots reference describes distinct screenshots for different form factors and common usage scenarios.
Decide between a viewport image and a full-page image
A viewport screenshot shows the page as rendered within the selected browser window. That is often appropriate for a compact website preview: choose the view that best represents the page. A full-page capture instead extends beyond the currently visible viewport and can become very tall, which may make it less useful as a small thumbnail.

The basic Chromium command above captures a screenshot, but the cited Chrome command-line documentation does not establish a full-page flag or a universal full-page command. If you specifically need the whole document, use a capture method that supports capturing beyond the viewport. Puppeteer’s screenshot API documents the captureBeyondViewport option; its documented default is false when there is no clip and true when there is a clip. Set the capture behavior deliberately rather than assuming a viewport screenshot includes the entire page.

Make the image representative
- Choose the page, not just the domain. Capture the URL whose content the thumbnail is meant to identify.
- Check responsive behavior. If the thumbnail stands for a mobile view, use a narrow viewport; if it stands for a desktop view, choose a wider one.
- Review the saved file. Confirm that the important content is visible and that the page state is suitable for the intended preview.
- Capture separate form factors when needed. A narrow and a wide screenshot can communicate materially different layouts.
- Do not treat sample dimensions as a standard. The display destination and the composition you need should determine the output dimensions.
Run the capture from another language

Troubleshooting
The terminal cannot find chrome
The browser executable may have a different name or may not be available on the system’s command path. Use the executable name provided by your installation, or invoke the browser using its installed path. The documented command examples use chrome; they do not establish one installation command that applies to every operating system or environment in India.
The image is not the layout you expected
Check the window dimensions. A narrow viewport can trigger a mobile layout, while a wider one can show a desktop layout. Capture again with dimensions suited to the intended preview; use separate captures if both layouts matter.

The image shows only part of the page
The command-line example is a screenshot capture, not a documented full-page workflow. For a complete document image, use a tool or API with explicit beyond-viewport capture support and configure that behavior for the capture.
You cannot find the output image
The documented command writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. Check the directory from which the command was run. If you specify a different output path using a supported method, check that path instead.
