How to Use Chrome’s Best Features for Smoother Browsing

A practical guide to Chrome’s built-in tools for tab organization, profiles, sync, privacy, accessibility, and performance.

Chrome is easier to use when you shape it around your tasks: organize tabs, separate work and personal browsing, choose what syncs, review site access, adjust readability, and troubleshoot slowdowns. The controls below are for desktop Chrome unless noted; labels and availability can vary by device, operating system, account, and Chrome version.

Organize tabs without losing your place

Chrome lets you rearrange tabs, keep frequently used pages close, and work with two pages at once. On desktop, open a tab with Ctrl+T on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+T on Mac. Open a window with Ctrl+N or Command+N, respectively. See Google’s Chrome tab guide for current controls.

  • Reorder: Drag a tab left or right along the tab strip.
  • Pin: Right-click a tab and choose Pin to keep a frequently visited page compact at the left of the strip.
  • Move between windows: Drag a tab out of its window to create a separate window, or drag it into another Chrome window.
  • Use split view: Put two pages side by side when comparing information or referring to one page while working in another. Availability and controls can vary by version.
  • Preview a tab group: Hover over a group to see its preview, where available.

Use a new window when you want a distinct workspace; use split view when both pages need to remain visible together.

Separate work and personal browsing with profiles

A Chrome profile can keep its own bookmarks, history, passwords, and other browsing information apart from another profile. Separate profiles are useful on a shared computer or when you want a clear boundary between work and personal activity. Google explains profile setup and personalization in its profile guide.

Profiles are separation, not a guarantee that other people cannot access an unlocked device or that work activity is hidden from an employer or network administrator. Choose the profile from Chrome’s profile menu, then use the intended profile for the relevant task.

Choose what Chrome syncs across devices

Signing in to Chrome with a Google Account can make selected Chrome information available on other devices. You do not have to sign in to use Chrome. Sync is configurable: possible saved information includes bookmarks, reading list, passwords, payment information, extensions, web apps, settings and preferences; tabs and history are available when enabled. Review the choices in Chrome’s sync settings rather than assuming everything is on or off. Google’s sync guide describes the available data and controls.

There is a trade-off between convenience and account data handling. Google says Chrome history saved to an account may be added to Web & App Activity and used to personalize other Google products, depending on your settings and country. If you want cross-device access only for particular items, select those items instead of enabling data you do not want saved.

Review site permissions and privacy choices

To check what a website can access, open Chrome settings and find Privacy and security, then open Site settings. Review permissions such as camera, microphone, notifications, and other site access; select a permission to manage its default behavior or review site-specific exceptions. Google’s settings overview links to the relevant controls. Exact labels may vary by platform and version.

Use Safe Browsing for security warnings

Safe Browsing can alert you to malware, risky extensions, phishing, and potentially unsafe sites on Google’s list. Choose the protection level that fits your preferences in Chrome’s privacy and security settings. Google describes the available privacy choices in Understand privacy in Chrome.

Know what Incognito does—and does not do

Incognito can help keep browsing private from other people who use the same device, for example by not retaining the session’s browsing history in Chrome after all Incognito windows are closed. It does not make you anonymous: websites still process information as you browse, and other parties such as an employer or network provider may be able to observe activity. Google frames the choice this way: “However, privacy is a personal choice and not one size fits all.”

Make pages easier to read and use

Chrome’s settings include options for zoom, language and page translation, accessibility, Reading mode, and Listen to this page mode. Use zoom to enlarge or reduce page content, translation when a page is in another language, and the reading or listening tools when they suit the task. Start with Chrome’s settings overview; some controls depend on device, platform, or Chrome version.

Make Chrome faster with browser-level checks

If browsing feels slow, begin with changes that are easy to reverse. Google’s Chrome speed guide recommends these checks:

  1. Update Chrome. Check for and install available browser updates, then relaunch if prompted.
  2. Close unused tabs. Keep only pages you need open; reopen pages later from history or bookmarks if necessary.
  3. Disable extensions you do not use. In Chrome’s extensions controls, turn off or remove extensions that are unnecessary, then see whether browsing improves.
  4. Inspect resource-heavy tasks. Open Chrome Task Manager from the browser menu’s more-tools section and look for tabs or extensions using substantial resources. Close a task only if you are comfortable losing its unsaved work.
  5. Review page preloading. Chrome can preload pages to make navigation feel quicker. Decide whether that convenience is worth the associated data use for you.

Google says preloading may use cookies if allowed and may send pages through Google in an encrypted form to hide identity from sites. This is Google’s description of its behavior, not a universal privacy guarantee. If you prefer to limit this kind of activity, review the preload setting and turn it off; if faster navigation matters more, leave it enabled.

When a setting is missing

Chrome controls can differ across desktop and mobile, operating systems, account configurations, and versions. If a menu item described here is not visible, update Chrome where possible and check the relevant Google Help page for your device. A missing control does not necessarily mean your account or browser is malfunctioning.
