To use Chrome DevTools with Selenium 4, send commands through the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) API exposed by your Selenium language binding. In Python, call driver.execute_cdp_cmd(command, arguments); in Java, use HasCdp.executeCdpCommand. This is programmatic access to browser features—not a way to open and control the interactive DevTools panel. For ongoing console or network events, consider Selenium WebDriver BiDi instead.
What “Chrome DevTools” means in Selenium
In this context, Chrome DevTools means the Chrome DevTools Protocol: a browser protocol that lets automation send commands to Chrome and, depending on the API and feature, access browser behavior beyond standard WebDriver commands. It does not mean opening the DevTools user interface and automating its panels.
Selenium documents CDP command support for its Chrome and Edge drivers. The API and syntax vary by language binding, so use the reference for your binding rather than copying code from another language. Selenium’s Chrome DevTools Protocol documentation describes the available approach and its caveats.
When to use CDP—and when not to
Use CDP for a discrete command
A CDP command is a command/response operation: supply a protocol command name and its parameters, then receive a response. Selenium’s Java example uses Network.setCookie. The command must belong to a valid protocol domain, and its arguments must match that command’s expected names and types.

Use BiDi for events and cross-browser direction
If your task is to react to a stream of console messages or network events, a one-off CDP command is not the same thing as an event subscription. Selenium positions WebDriver BiDi as its W3C standards-based, cross-browser direction for bidirectional browser communication. BiDi uses a WebSocket connection for event-driven features such as logging and network handling. See Selenium’s WebDriver BiDi guide, its logging documentation, and the Python BiDi network API.
Run a CDP command in Selenium 4 with Python
Python exposes execute_cdp_cmd(cmd, cmd_args) on the WebDriver API. It executes the named CDP command and returns its JSON response. This example uses the documented Selenium method shape and the protocol’s Network.setCookie command; check the current protocol documentation for the exact parameters supported by your Chrome version.

driver.quit()The call’s general form is driver.execute_cdp_cmd("Domain.command", {"parameter": value}). The command name is case-sensitive protocol syntax, not a Selenium method name. Selenium’s Python API reference documents the method and its JSON response: Python WebDriver API.
Java pattern: use HasCdp
Selenium’s documented Java pattern casts the driver to HasCdp and calls executeCdpCommand. The command remains a CDP command with a map of arguments. The following shows the documented call shape; use the Selenium Java version and imports appropriate to your project.

Copy the command’s parameter names and types precisely into the argument object or map.

Check the result returned by the Selenium call. A successful method invocation does not by itself prove that the browser state or page behavior changed as intended; verify the outcome relevant to your test.
Selenium’s documentation cautions that CDP is not designed as a stable testing API and that its functionality depends heavily on browser version. Treat CDP integrations as version-sensitive: keep browser and Selenium versions compatible, and recheck commands when either changes.

BiDi is not a guarantee that every feature is implemented identically in every browser or Selenium binding. Check Selenium’s current BiDi documentation and the API reference for the browser and language you use.

Check version compatibility before relying on CDP
Selenium’s CDP documentation says its bindings generate APIs for common CDP domains and target the three most recent Chrome versions at a given time. That is a moving support window, not a promise about a fixed set of versions. The Selenium 4.40 release announcement dated January 18, 2026, listed Chrome DevTools versions 144, 143, and 142 for that release; those numbers are release-specific context, not a current compatibility guarantee. Troubleshooting CDP calls
Unknown command or invalid parameters
Confirm the domain and command spelling, then compare every argument name and type with the protocol definition for the browser version in use. CDP parameters are not interchangeable with similarly named WebDriver options.
Method missing in your language binding
Check the API reference for that specific Selenium binding. The Python entry point is execute_cdp_cmd; Java’s documented pattern uses HasCdp.executeCdpCommand. Do not infer one language’s method name from another.
It worked before a browser update
CDP is version-sensitive. Compare the Chrome and Selenium versions, consult Selenium’s current supported-version guidance, and verify that the command and parameters remain available in the browser’s protocol version. If the feature is event-oriented, consider whether a BiDi implementation is a better fit.
Command returns but test behavior is unchanged
Inspect the returned JSON and verify the postcondition in the browser or page. Check that the command was issued after the correct navigation or setup step and that its parameters apply to the target context. A protocol response should not be treated as a substitute for asserting the behavior your test requires.

Need console or network events rather than a single response
Use the relevant Selenium BiDi event API when available for your browser and binding. Selenium documents logging handlers and network APIs, but support continues to develop; confirm the current implementation details in the official documentation.
