If you need a legacy site to work, use the browser the site supports; in a managed Windows organization, an administrator can route selected URLs from Chrome to Microsoft Edge in IE mode using Chrome Enterprise Legacy Browser Support (LBS). Changing Chrome’s user-agent string is useful for limited testing, but it does not give Chrome Internet Explorer’s rendering engine.
What “Chrome compatibility mode” can mean
The phrase can refer to two different goals: opening an old website that depends on legacy browser behavior, or checking how a website responds to a browser identity. The right method depends on which problem you have.

Google describes integrated LBS for Chrome 74 and later on Windows. Chrome 88 and later support integrated LBS, so the former LBS extension is no longer the way to set it up. For a personal computer: choose the browser the site supports
If one old website fails in Chrome, start by asking the site owner or your IT administrator which browser and configuration it supports. A user-agent switcher may help test whether the site is making a decision based on the browser identity string, but it is not a general compatibility fix: Chrome still uses Chrome’s rendering engine and does not gain IE-specific components.

Google also notes that websites may identify browsers in ways beyond the user-agent string. A successful identity-string test therefore does not prove that the site will work fully in another browser. Google: Test Chrome apps and sites across platforms
For a managed Windows organization: route selected URLs with LBS
Chrome Enterprise integrated LBS lets administrators send specified URLs to an alternate browser. It is meant for organizations managing Windows devices and legacy sites—not as a switch an individual Chrome user can turn on for an arbitrary website.

Plan the browser and site-list configuration
First identify the applications that actually require a legacy browser. If they require IE compatibility, Google’s documented integration uses Microsoft Edge IE mode with LBS and a corresponding site list. Its instructions specify Edge 87 or later and Chrome 87 or later for that particular setup; those minimums are not a general statement about current browser support. Check Google’s current guidance and Microsoft’s current Edge requirements when planning a deployment.
Google describes configuring LBS with URL rules or an Internet Explorer/Edge enterprise site list. Configure only the required sites, select the alternate browser, and ensure that Edge is configured for IE mode when the applications depend on it. Roll out and verify in a test group
- Enable integrated LBS through your Windows management policies. Use the current Google instructions for the policy names and supported configuration rather than installing the retired LBS extension.
- Provide the URL rules or enterprise site list. Confirm that the rules identify the sites that should open in the alternate browser and do not accidentally permit either browser through a greylist rule.
- Configure Edge IE mode and its matching site list when required. For IE-dependent applications, verify that Chrome and Edge refer to the intended shared site-list configuration.
- Apply policy and test with a limited group. On managed Windows devices, an administrator can refresh Group Policy with
gpupdate /forcewhen appropriate. - Check the applied settings and routing decision. In Chrome, inspect
chrome://policyandchrome://browser-switch/internals. In Edge, inspectedge://policyandedge://compat. - Test the actual application before expanding deployment. Include the workflows that depend on legacy technology such as ActiveX, Java, or Silverlight; routing to a browser alone does not establish that every application will work.

When user-agent switching is useful—and when it is not
A user-agent switch changes the browser identification string sent with requests. It can help a developer check a site’s user-agent-dependent behavior, but it does not turn Chrome into Internet Explorer, enable IE-only browser components, or guarantee that a site will accept the request. Google cautions that sites can use other methods to identify a browser, too. User-agent spoofing is not a privacy feature and may affect performance.

Troubleshooting
A legacy website still fails after changing the user-agent
- Cause: The site may depend on IE’s rendering behavior or legacy components rather than just checking the user-agent.
- Fix: Use the site’s supported browser or ask the site owner or administrator for the supported access path. In an organization, assess whether LBS and Edge IE mode are appropriate.
A managed URL opens in the wrong browser
- Cause: The Chrome policy may not be applied, the URL rule or site list may not match, or a greylist rule may permit either browser.
- Fix: Inspect
chrome://policyandchrome://browser-switch/internals; review the URL decision and the configured lists. Refresh Group Policy if needed.
Edge opens the site, but IE-dependent behavior is missing
- Cause: Edge may not be configured for IE mode, or its site-list configuration may not match the one expected by the Chrome LBS setup.
- Fix: Check
edge://policyandedge://compat, then verify that Edge IE mode and the intended site list are configured as Google’s setup requires.
The old LBS extension is unavailable
- Cause: Google says Chrome 88 and later support integrated LBS instead of the former extension.
- Fix: Use Chrome’s integrated, administrator-managed LBS configuration for supported Windows deployments. Google’s integrated LBS instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install the old Chrome LBS extension to get compatibility mode?
No. Google says integrated LBS is supported in Chrome 88 and later, replacing the former extension for this purpose.
Does Chrome LBS make Chrome use Internet Explorer’s rendering engine?
No. LBS routes selected URLs to an alternate browser; Chrome itself does not become Internet Explorer.
