To preview clothing or an accessory in ChatGPT, open a product listing that offers Try on, select it, then take or upload a selfie. ChatGPT generates an image showing how the item could look on you. You can also upload a clothing or accessory photo in a conversation and ask for a preview. Treat either result as a visual approximation—not proof of fit, size, color, drape, or exact appearance.
Try on an item from a ChatGPT product listing
- Find a clothing or accessory listing in ChatGPT that displays Try on. The control is tied to supported product listings, so it may not appear on every item.
- Select Try on.
- Take a selfie or upload one when prompted.
- View the generated try-on image to see how the item could look on you.
OpenAI describes this as a way to see “how the item could look on you.” The preview is an image generated by ChatGPT, not a measurement-based fitting.

Preview clothing from a photo you upload
If you have a picture of an item outside a ChatGPT product listing, upload the clothing or accessory photo in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. For example: “Can you show how this jacket might look on me?” This route lets you supply the item image yourself; the listing route starts with an item already attached to a product card. OpenAI does not say that either route is more accurate.
For general image inputs, OpenAI lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF support, with a 20 MB limit per image. You can attach an image with the plus control, drag and drop it, or paste it. These are general image-input instructions; OpenAI does not publish a separate photo specification for dedicated try-on.

Manage the reference photo used for future try-ons
OpenAI’s October 1, 2026 release note says the reference photo is saved for future try-ons. To change or remove it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. OpenAI’s current Shopping help page describes the same controls. See Shopping with ChatGPT Search and the ChatGPT release notes.
What the preview can—and cannot—tell you
OpenAI warns: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” A generated preview therefore cannot establish how a garment will fit in real life or reliably confirm its exact color, drape, or appearance.

Why you may not see Try on
The dedicated feature is described for clothing and accessory listings, but OpenAI does not provide a complete country-by-country or plan-by-plan availability matrix. The control may not appear for every product, listing, account, location, or platform. Check whether Try on appears in your own ChatGPT shopping interface rather than assuming it is available everywhere.

ChatGPT Images has separate general image creation and editing features. Its help page says Images is available on all tiers and on web, iOS, and Android, but that does not establish that shopping-specific try-on is available to every user in every location. General editing also has its own limitation: selected areas may not be precise, and edits can extend beyond them.
