To stop ChatGPT from using saved details for personalization, open Settings → Personalization → Memory and turn off the Memory controls available on your account. For a single conversation, start a Temporary Chat; choose Unpersonalized before sending your first message if you also want to prevent the chat from using existing memories or custom instructions.
Choose the right control for your goal

Memory and model training are separate. Turning off Memory is not the same as opting out of model improvement. OpenAI explains the model-improvement setting in its Data Controls FAQ.

Turn off Memory for future chats
- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Memory.
- Turn off the Memory controls shown for your account. Depending on the memory experience available to you, these may include controls for saved memories and references to chat history.
Settings and availability can differ by plan, region, platform, and workspace. If the labels or options do not match, use the controls visible in your account or check your workspace policy. OpenAI describes Memory controls and their behavior in its Memory FAQ.
Delete details ChatGPT has already remembered
Turning off Memory prevents the available Memory features from being used for future personalization, but it does not necessarily remove saved-memory items already stored separately. Review the memory summary or saved-memory controls and delete the details you want removed. Also delete the chat where you originally shared the information if you do not want it retained there.

- Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory.
- Deleting a saved memory does not delete the original chat.
- Files or information from connected apps may require separate attention.

Use Temporary Chat for one conversation
- Start a new Temporary Chat.
- If the conversation must not use existing memories or custom instructions, choose Unpersonalized before sending your first message. That choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins.
- Keep the chat temporary. Saving it converts it into a regular chat, which follows your account-level personalization and model-improvement settings.
An unsaved Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history and does not create or update memories. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ states: “ChatGPT won’t create memories from an unsaved Temporary Chat.” A Temporary Chat can still use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins if it is personalized, which is why the Unpersonalized choice matters when you want to avoid that context.

Understand what Temporary Chat does not guarantee
Temporary Chat is not immediate deletion. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Limited safety and security uses of context may also apply in rare, high-risk situations even when personalization features are off. If a Temporary Chat uses a GPT action, information sent to a third party is handled under that recipient’s privacy policy and may be kept longer or used for other purposes. Opt out of model improvement separately
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone, confirming if prompted.
With this setting off, new conversations remain in history but are not used to train OpenAI models, as described in the Data Controls FAQ. This setting does not turn off Memory or delete chats.

Check workspace rules if you use a managed account
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content is not used for model training by default, according to OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ. Workspace owners can set retention, memory, compliance, and access rules, so consult your administrator or workspace policy for controls that apply to your account.
