Give it the exact page and fields you want, choose a way for it to access the page, ask it to show where each result came from, and verify the answers against the source. “Hidden” here means hard to find or exposed after an ordinary page interaction, not private information or data behind access controls you are not authorized to use.
How can I find data on a webpage with ChatGPT?
Start with a narrowly defined request. “Find everything useful on this site” leaves the target vague; a page URL plus field names, filters, and a date or category gives ChatGPT something it can check. For example:
On this page, find the entries dated 29 September 2026. Return the date, item name, and value from the “Status” column as a table. For each row, include the page URL and the table heading or nearby text that supports it. If you cannot access the page or verify a value, say so rather than infer it.
Use the date and field names that actually fit your task. If the page is long, specify the section or table; if you want a subset, state the matching condition. This makes the result easier to inspect and reduces the chance that a plausible-looking but unrelated value will be returned.

Then choose a page-access method that matches the content:
- ChatGPT Search: useful for discovering public web sources and cross-checking a claim. Search results and citations are starting points for verification, not proof that every relevant row on a specific page was read. OpenAI notes that “Search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” (OpenAI’s guidance on searching the web.)
- Deep research: a better fit when you need a cited report across multiple sources or want to prioritize selected websites. Access to connected sources remains subject to your own permissions and workspace permissions. (OpenAI’s deep research guidance.)
- Built-in desktop browser: useful when your task concerns an open page or multiple tabs in the desktop app. Availability and capabilities can depend on plan and workspace. (OpenAI’s built-in browser guidance.)
- Site tools: on supported desktop-app pages, a website may offer task-specific tools, such as search or dashboard actions, that are not obvious from its ordinary controls. Availability depends on the account, model, site, page, plan, and workspace settings; the website determines which tools it provides. OpenAI says, “Site tools use WebMCP, a proposed web standard.” (OpenAI’s site tools guidance.)
These are different routes to the page, not interchangeable guarantees. Search is suited to public-web discovery; deep research is suited to a cited multi-source task; a browser works with pages and tabs; and a site tool is only available when the current site and account support it.
Can ChatGPT read a table on a website?
It may be able to read a table when that table is present in page content accessible to the selected feature. Ask for the exact columns and rows, and have the response preserve the table’s labels and units. For example:
From the table headed “Quarterly results,” return the rows for Q2 and Q3 and the values in the “Revenue” and “Region” columns. Keep the displayed units and label each value with its column. Include the page link and the table heading. If the table is not available to you, tell me what you could access.

Do not assume a citation points to a specific cell or proves that a whole table was extracted. Compare the returned values with the visible source, especially where tables have repeated headings, footnotes, merged cells, or units in a caption. If a result seems inconsistent, ask ChatGPT to check one named row and column against the page rather than asking it to repeat the full extraction.
How do I get ChatGPT to find a specific value on a page?
- Identify the page. Supply its URL or open it in an available browser environment. If there are several similar pages, name the exact page and relevant section.
- Describe the target. Give the field or column name, the row key, and any filter. For example, ask for “the value in the ‘Last updated’ column for the entry named ‘Example Service’,” not simply “the date.”
- Set the output format. Ask for a short table or a list with one result per match. Request displayed units, dates, and labels so a bare number cannot be mistaken for another field.
- Require evidence. Ask for the source page and the table heading, section heading, or passage supporting each result. This is a useful verification request, not a promise that ChatGPT will always supply a stable cell locator or a complete representation of the page.
- Check the result yourself. Open the source and compare the value, label, and unit. If the evidence is missing or ambiguous, ask again with a more specific location, source, or date—or provide the relevant page content directly.
When the page changes frequently, include the date or version you care about. A cached or indexed copy may not match the current page; a live page may also differ by location, personalization, or sign-in state.
Rank #3
Why can’t ChatGPT see data that appears when I click or sign in?
A page can show something in your browser that is not available to a search index or to the particular ChatGPT feature you are using. Common causes include:
- Interaction-dependent content: a table or value may appear only after choosing a tab, opening a menu, applying a filter, or loading more results. Try a permitted live browser or a supported site tool if available; otherwise paste or upload the relevant material.
- Login or permissions: a private dashboard is not made public merely because you ask ChatGPT to find it. Use only access you are authorized to use. Connected-source access is constrained by user and workspace permissions.
- Personalization or region: your view may vary by account, settings, or location, so a result from a public indexed page may not match your screen.
- Indexing and cache gaps: offline search depends on indexed or cached content. A specific URL may not be present, and coverage or freshness can vary by site, language, region, page, and content type. (OpenAI’s offline web search guidance.)
- Browser visibility settings: in ChatGPT Atlas, a site’s visibility settings can prevent on-page features from reading its content. Check the relevant settings if Atlas is the environment you are using. (OpenAI’s Atlas browsing settings guidance.)
If the data is visible to you but not to ChatGPT, the most dependable next step may be to copy the relevant rows or upload an appropriate file, provided you are allowed to share that content. Do not ask the model to bypass a login, defeat a CAPTCHA, or evade a site’s controls; use authorized access and the site’s supported features.

Treat a generated value as a lead to check, not as a substitute for the page. Open the cited source, find the named table or passage, and compare the value alongside its label and unit. For several rows, check each row rather than sampling one and assuming the rest were extracted correctly. If the source has changed, note the date you checked it and ask ChatGPT to work from the current page or the source material you provide.
If a citation opens a general page rather than the relevant content, or the page does not show the result, request a more precise source location. If ChatGPT cannot establish the value, use “not found” or “could not verify” rather than filling in a likely answer. Search and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, so direct comparison matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a screenshot when the page is visually difficult
A screenshot can help preserve what a page visibly showed at a particular moment, especially when a value is difficult to locate in the page layout. It is not a magic route into inaccessible data: it only records what was rendered in the capture. A screenshot also may not preserve selectable text or all rows of a long table, so inspect the resulting image and provide the relevant crop or source context to ChatGPT when needed.
For pages where data appears only after interaction, first use a permitted browser interaction to reveal it, then capture the visible result. Do not put credentials or private information into a capture request unless you understand and are authorized to share them.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures a page as an image or PDF; it does not itself identify or validate a value for ChatGPT. A single request can give you a screenshot to inspect or provide as context. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to capture. ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot, and each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers indicate the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.
Common problems and what to try
- The answer is generic or misses the target row: specify the page, table or section heading, exact column, row key, and filter. Ask for one value at a time if the page has repeated labels.
- The citation does not support the value: open it and compare the relevant passage or table. Request a more precise source and do not retain a value you cannot verify.
- The page appears empty or incomplete: check whether the content requires a click, a sign-in, a different region, or a live browser. If available, provide the relevant source material directly.
- The result may be stale: specify the date or version and use a current page or supplied source rather than relying on an indexed or cached result alone.
- A site tool is unavailable: site tools require a supported account/model and a website that supplies a matching tool. Use another permitted route, such as the browser or copied page content; do not assume every site supports the feature.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT find data on any website?
No. Access depends on the page, the selected feature, and permissions. Some content is not indexed or available to the browser or site tool being used.
Can I use this to uncover private or access-controlled data?
No. This workflow is for locating information you are authorized to access. It does not bypass sign-in requirements or a website’s controls.
Should I trust a number if ChatGPT provides a citation?
Only after checking that the cited page actually supports that number in the relevant row, column, and units.
