I call it a “$100-a-month virtual assistant” to describe the value I want from it, not its subscription price: OpenAI currently lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. The figure is a personal value proposition, not a measured saving or a claim that ChatGPT replaces a human assistant.
What a virtual-assistant approach actually means
Treat ChatGPT as a tool for moving information through a task: find and organize material, extract details from files, analyze data, or help decide what to do next. You still set the goal, provide context, check the result and take responsibility for decisions or actions.

That broader role is consistent with OpenAI Economic Research’s 2025 study of ChatGPT use. It estimates that messages were about 49% Asking, 40% Doing and 11% Expressing. For work-related messages, about 56% were Doing as of July 2025, and nearly three-quarters of those Doing messages were writing tasks. The study also associates about 81% of work-related messages with obtaining, documenting or interpreting information, or with decisions, advice, problem-solving and creative thinking. Use it to gather and organize information
For a question that depends on recent information, ask ChatGPT to search for relevant sources and turn them into a brief you can inspect. For a larger question with multiple steps, Deep Research is designed to investigate across sources and can produce a cited report where available. Neither a polished answer nor citations remove the need to check that the sources support the claims.

Try a prompt like: “Research the current options for [decision]. Use recent sources, separate confirmed facts from uncertain points, cite the sources for each key claim, and finish with a short comparison and questions I should resolve.” Replace the bracketed text with your actual topic. Turn documents and recordings into an actionable brief
Upload a supported document or audio file and ask for a specific output rather than a generic summary. For example, request a list of deadlines, decisions, unresolved questions and the file section supporting each item. ChatGPT can answer questions about uploaded files, summarize or extract information, and handle supported audio tasks, but extraction errors are possible.

Keep the original open while checking names, dates, amounts and obligations. Avoid uploading sensitive material unless your organization’s rules and your account’s data settings allow it. A useful prompt is: “Summarize this file in five bullets, then list every deadline and action item with the page or section where it appears. Data analysis can help summarize trends, clean data and explore projections from a spreadsheet. State what each column represents, what you want to learn, and how you want the answer presented. For instance: “Summarize monthly revenue by product, flag missing values, explain the three largest changes, and show the calculations used. Do not fill in missing data.”

Make repeat work easier with a Project
A Project can keep related chats, files and instructions together, giving recurring work a shared context. OpenAI describes the feature this way: “Projects keep related chats, files, and instructions together.” You might create one for weekly research, a recurring report or a long-running planning task, then return to it instead of rebuilding the context each time. Write instructions that define the task and its boundaries: the intended audience, preferred format, sources to prioritize, information that must be checked, and what the assistant should do when it is unsure. Scheduled tasks for reminders or recurring prompts
Some users can set up one-time or recurring scheduled tasks. Where the feature is available, it can prompt a check-in or repeat a reminder, but it should not be mistaken for a person monitoring work or independently handling every follow-up. To make a $100 value claim meaningful, define what the number represents—such as your own estimate of time reclaimed or the value of work completed—and keep a record that supports it. The usage study describes patterns across users; it does not establish personal savings, accuracy or equivalence to a paid human assistant. If a task requires accountable judgment, sensitive handling, negotiation or action in external systems, decide whether a human needs to review or perform it.

A practical way to judge whether it is helping
- Choose one repeatable task with a clear output, such as turning a meeting recording into checked action items.
- Give ChatGPT the relevant context and ask for evidence or source locations alongside its conclusions.
- Check the result against the original material and correct errors before using it.
- Track the time spent prompting and reviewing as well as the time saved, if you want to make a personal value estimate.
- Stop or change the workflow if the review burden, limits, privacy requirements or error risk outweigh the benefit.
ChatGPT is most useful as an assistant when it handles the information work around a task and leaves verification, judgment and accountability with you.
