The same workflow works across Chrome, Firefox, and Edge even though panel names and controls differ.
Open DevTools on the element that looks wrong
Right-click the rendered element and choose Inspect, or activate the element picker and click the element on the page. In Chrome and Edge, the picker shortcut is Command+Shift+C on Mac and Control+Shift+C on Windows and Linux. Menus and shortcuts can vary by browser and operating system.
Check the selected node in the DOM before diagnosing its CSS. A nearby parent, child, or overlay may be the element that actually controls the visible result; inspecting the wrong node can make relevant declarations appear to be missing.
Find which CSS rule is overriding your style
In Chrome and Edge, select the element and open Elements > Styles. Firefox presents the equivalent rule inspection in the Inspector. The Styles view shows matching declarations, including declarations that have been overridden. A crossed-out declaration is still useful evidence: it shows that a rule matched, but another declaration won.

- Find the intended declaration in the Styles list. Note whether it is crossed out and which selector and stylesheet contain it.
- Inspect the declaration that is taking effect. Compare the selectors, source order, importance, and applicable conditions to see why it wins; in Edge, a specificity tooltip can help compare selector specificity.
- Check inherited rules and custom properties if the selected element has no winning declaration of its own.
- Follow the stylesheet link or source location beside the rule to find where it is defined.
Do not assume specificity is the only cause: inheritance, source order, conditional rules, or a different property value can account for the result. Trace the actual winning rule before rewriting selectors.
Confirm the final value in Computed
Use Computed to answer what value the browser ultimately applies after resolving the cascade. In Chrome and Edge, the panel can filter the view to applied values; Show All exposes additional properties, including inherited ones. In Firefox, expanding a computed property reveals the rule and source file and line that set it. Firefox describes these calculated values as corresponding to getComputedStyle.

For a disputed property, compare the Computed value with the intended value, then return to Styles to identify the winning declaration. If the value depends on a custom property, trace that variable’s value and where it is defined rather than changing a downstream declaration blindly.
Test a CSS change without losing track of the cause
In Styles, edit a value or disable a declaration and observe the page. Change one plausible cause at a time: if the result changes as predicted, you have a useful diagnosis; if it does not, revert and test another candidate. Treat these edits as experiments. A live DevTools change is not necessarily saved to your project files, so make the confirmed fix in the stylesheet and workflow your project actually uses.

Check dimensions, spacing, and interaction state
When a value looks right but the element is still positioned or sized unexpectedly, inspect the box-model view. It helps distinguish the content area, padding, border, and margin that contribute to the element’s dimensions and spacing.
If the problem appears only during interaction, force the relevant supported pseudo-class, such as :hover or :focus, in the Styles controls. This lets you inspect the state without having to keep the pointer or keyboard in exactly the right position. In Chrome, focus emulation can also help when a menu or overlay disappears because DevTools itself has taken focus.

Trace minified stylesheets and check broader causes
Click a rule’s source link to navigate to its stylesheet and location. If the file is minified, Edge documents formatting it in the Sources editor. Do not assume that a framework’s original source will be available: mapping generated files back to original files depends on source maps being present and loaded.
If the rule appears plausible but the page still differs from expectations, verify the selected element, winning cascade rule, inherited values, custom-property values, active pseudo-class, and box model. Also check whether the relevant viewport or rendering mode is active. Chrome’s Coverage panel can show which CSS was used during that page session; a rule marked unused in that session is not, by itself, proof that it is safe to delete.

Panel labels and controls are browser-specific; the underlying method is the same: select the right node, find the winning declaration, verify the computed value, and inspect layout or state when needed.
