Connect a PC-compatible controller. Rockstar’s PC controls guidance identifies XInput controllers as supported and gives an Xbox 360 controller as an example. That guidance was published with the PC version in 2015, so it should not be treated as a guarantee for every current device or launcher. If the controller is not detected, review controller support and configuration in the platform you use to launch the game. Steam, for example, documents input mappings for gamepad, keyboard, and mouse events. That is general Steam guidance, not a guarantee that every GTA V launcher and device combination will work identically. See Steam’s controller configuration guidance.
What to expect when switching between devices
You can use the controller for gameplay and the keyboard and mouse for tasks where they feel more convenient. Steam notes that some games’ interfaces may be designed primarily for mouse and keyboard even when a controller works in the game. A controller working during play therefore does not necessarily mean every menu is equally convenient to navigate with it. Steam’s guidance on game controllers describes this general distinction.

Players have reported that on-screen button labels can change after they use a different input device. Rockstar’s cited controls guidance does not promise a particular prompt-switching behavior across versions, so treat such reports as anecdotal and verify the labels in your own game. A Steam Community discussion records one such observation, but it is not an official compatibility statement.
Troubleshoot a controller that does not work

Confirm the device is recognized by your PC and game platform. A controller’s physical connection alone does not establish that GTA V or its launcher recognizes it.

Check the platform’s controller settings. If you launch through Steam, review its configuration and input mapping options. These can map controller, keyboard, and mouse inputs, but they do not guarantee that every device or game setup will behave the same way.

Try a documented input type. Rockstar’s published PC guidance specifically names XInput support and an Xbox 360 pad as an example. It does not establish support for every controller standard or model.

Use the keyboard and mouse where menus or prompts are awkward. Steam cautions that a game interface can favor mouse and keyboard even if gameplay accepts a controller.

Test the installed version rather than relying on a universal prompt rule. The cited Rockstar article does not document precisely when or how GTA V switches its on-screen labels between keyboard and controller.

Rockstar’s PC controls article is the primary source for XInput support, rebinding, and keyboard defaults for driving and flying; it dates to the PC release in 2015. Steam’s controller pages explain platform-level configuration and interface considerations, not GTA V-specific guarantees. Taken together, these sources support using both input devices on PC, while leaving recognition and prompt behavior dependent on the particular device, platform, and installed game.
