The survey is the creator’s fulfillment form: it records your reward choices, address, optional extras and any shipping, tax or other balance that applies.
BackerKit is a pledge manager, not a shop holding finished RPGs in stock. Your survey response helps the creator and its fulfillment partners prepare rewards, but receiving the survey is not a promise that production is complete or that a parcel is about to leave the warehouse.

What BackerKit does in a tabletop RPG campaign
Crowdfunding support is different from buying a completed game at retail. BackerKit explains that “When you back a crowdfunding project on BackerKit or Kickstarter, you’re not purchasing a finished product off a shelf.” At pledge time, the creator may still be writing, editing, commissioning art, manufacturing books or arranging fulfillment.
After the campaign and its production planning move forward, the creator can send a BackerKit survey. The survey gathers the information needed to turn your pledge into a shippable order:

- Any choice attached to the reward, such as a size, color, design or edition, if the campaign offers variants.
- Answers to project-specific questions.
- Optional add-ons that the creator has made available.
- Shipping, tax or another balance when the campaign’s terms require it.
The creator, rather than BackerKit, remains responsible for making the RPG and arranging delivery. BackerKit’s help guidance notes that creators may use fulfillment partners, and each project has its own production schedule and shipping rules.
Before you open the survey
Confirm that the campaign and pledge are the ones you want
Read the campaign page and the creator’s latest updates before selecting a tier. Record what the tier actually promises: a physical rulebook, digital files, a special edition or another named reward. Do not infer contents from another campaign or from a generic description of tabletop RPGs. If the creator has changed a reward, the campaign update and the survey are the controlling information.
Find the survey invitation
Most backers begin with a survey link in an email from the project creator. BackerKit says you do not need to create an account merely to respond. Use the link supplied for your pledge and keep the campaign email available in case the survey asks you to verify information.

Your pledge should show as paid or otherwise completed in the original crowdfunding service. A failed original payment is a different problem from a normal survey charge: BackerKit says a failed pledge may need to be reinstated before the reward can be fulfilled. If a balance appears unexpectedly, verify the original payment status rather than assuming the survey charged you twice.
How to complete a BackerKit survey
BackerKit’s backer instructions describe the following flow. Labels can vary slightly by project, so read the creator’s instructions on the page you receive.

- Open the survey link. Follow the link in the creator’s email and open the project associated with your pledge. An account is not required just to submit the survey.
- Select your country. Choose the destination country before entering the address. Shipping rules and available rates can depend on this selection.
- Answer project questions. Complete every required question shown by the creator. A question might ask you to confirm a format or select among variants; only choices displayed for your pledge are available to you.
- Review the pledge and reward. Check the pledge level, listed items and quantities. Compare the screen with the campaign description and any update that changed the reward.
- Choose optional add-ons only if you want them. Add-ons are separate from the core pledge. Select an item only when its description, price and availability suit you; leaving an optional item unselected does not reduce the reward you already backed.
- Enter the shipping address. Type the address exactly as the carrier should receive it, including apartment, unit, postal-code and regional details where applicable. Check spelling, capitalization and phone or delivery fields that the project requests.
- Inspect every charge. Review the original pledge, any outstanding balance, shipping, tax and add-on lines. The final screen is the place to catch an unintended quantity or an incorrect destination.
- Provide payment information for new charges. If the survey requests money for shipping, tax, add-ons or a reinstated pledge, submit the payment details through the survey’s payment step. If no additional amount is due, there should be no second charge for the core reward.
- Confirm the survey. Submit only after the address, selections and total are correct. Save the confirmation email or page for your records.
BackerKit’s survey guide says you can return and make changes until the creator locks responses. The creator’s deadline is therefore important: a survey left incomplete or changed after the lock date may not be reflected in fulfillment. Do you have to pay again when you fill out the survey?
Not for the core reward. BackerKit’s help page answers the question directly: “No, your original pledge payment has already been collected.” The survey is a second payment only when the project displays a separate amount that you choose or owe.

Always review the complete order before confirming. The fact that the original pledge was collected does not make optional purchases, later shipping or an unpaid pledge balance free.
How shipping charges are set
There is no universal BackerKit shipping price for tabletop RPGs. The creator configures the project’s shipping method and rates. BackerKit documents several approaches in its shipping-fee guidance:
- Weight-based shipping for the whole order: the rate can reflect the combined weight of pledge rewards and selected add-ons.
- Separate shipping for pledge rewards and add-ons: the project can calculate those parts independently.
- Shipping collected later: the creator can postpone the charge until the survey or another fulfillment stage.
Before paying, check four details in the survey: the destination country or region, the rate shown for that destination, whether shipping is due now or later, and any explanation the creator provided. A bulky physical book bundle, a digital-only reward and an international delivery can have very different costs, so do not substitute another backer’s amount for your own displayed total.

How to compare pledge levels or editions
If a campaign offers multiple levels, compare them using the information on that campaign rather than assuming a typical RPG tier includes particular products. This table is a decision framework, not a list of contents for an unnamed project.

A lower pledge can become more expensive after shipping, tax and extras, while a higher tier can be poor value if it contains items you do not want. Compare the complete displayed total and the specific contents, not just the headline pledge amount.
Understanding add-ons and variant choices
Add-ons are optional purchases
An add-on is an extra item offered through the pledge manager rather than part of the reward you originally selected. It might be a supplementary product, accessory or variant, but an unnamed campaign may offer none. Select only items that the survey identifies as available to your pledge. BackerKit’s explanation of add-ons is available at its add-on help page.
Kickstarter add-ons can appear after the campaign
For Kickstarter projects using BackerKit, the creator can import campaign add-ons after the campaign ends and map them to matching survey add-ons. The survey may ask you to confirm a choice such as a size, color or design. BackerKit describes that process at its Kickstarter add-on support page. The presence of this feature does not establish that a particular RPG campaign offers apparel, accessories or alternate editions; rely on the items actually shown to you.
What the fundraising statistics do—and do not—mean
BackerKit reports that creators using its add-ons receive 15–20% additional funds from add-on sales alone, on average; the cited page does not state a publication year. It also reports a 16% average additional fundraising when creators offer add-ons on BackerKit after already offering them on Kickstarter, in a help article last updated December 16, 2024. These are platform-reported creator fundraising figures, not a discount, refund or expected saving for an individual backer, and they are not a forecast for any particular RPG.

When will your BackerKit reward ship?
A survey is a fulfillment step, not a shipping notice. The creator may send it while writing, editing, manufacturing or arranging logistics are still underway. BackerKit says project timelines vary and that the creator is responsible for production and shipping, often with fulfillment partners. The reliable source for a specific delivery estimate is the creator’s campaign page and updates, together with any date shown in your survey.
Do not treat the survey email as proof that your parcel has been packed. A project can need more time after collecting addresses because of proofing, manufacturing queues, customs, warehouse scheduling or a reported delay. Conversely, waiting to complete the survey can prevent the creator from using your correct address when fulfillment begins. Submit it by the stated deadline, then monitor creator updates for schedule changes and tracking information.

BackerKit allows a backer to return to the survey and make changes until the creator locks responses. Use that window to correct an address, switch an available variant or remove an unwanted add-on. After the lock, the creator may be unable to change the fulfillment file without manual help, and late changes can affect shipping. The exact deadline and process are project-specific, so follow the instructions in the survey and the creator’s messages.
If you moved after submitting, look for an edit link in the confirmation or survey email before contacting the creator. If the project has already locked responses, contact the creator through the campaign’s official channel with your pledge information; do not assume BackerKit can override a creator’s fulfillment cutoff.

Common problems and practical fixes
The survey link does not work
Open the link from the original creator email, check that you are using the correct campaign and avoid forwarding a link that may be tied to another pledge. If it still fails, use the creator’s support instructions or BackerKit’s help center and include the campaign name and the email address associated with the pledge.

The amount is higher than expected
Expand each line in the order review. Shipping, tax, a selected add-on or a failed original pledge can explain a balance. Compare the displayed items with your intended choices and verify the original payment status before submitting.
Your country or address is unavailable
Check that you selected the correct country first and entered the address in the format requested. If the destination is not supported or the rate is missing, ask the creator whether that region is included; only the creator can confirm the project’s delivery policy.
You missed the survey deadline
Contact the creator immediately with your pledge details. A late response may require a manual arrangement and can affect fulfillment, especially if the creator has already locked the survey or sent address data to a warehouse.

Do not treat a reinstatement request as a normal second charge. Follow the project’s payment instructions, confirm that the pledge is restored, and then complete the survey so the creator can associate your selections with a valid pledge.
If you missed the original campaign
Some creators enable late pledges or continue collecting support through a BackerKit pledge manager. BackerKit’s frequently asked questions describe pledge-manager functions and late pledges, but availability, price and reward selection remain campaign-specific. If a late-pledge page is offered, read its current terms carefully: it may use different pricing or shipping rules from the original campaign and may close before production is complete.
Should you buy a tabletop RPG rulebook separately?
Only consider a separate retail purchase after checking the campaign tier and survey. A campaign may already include the tabletop RPG core rulebook, while another tier may provide only digital files or a different edition. Buying a generic tabletop RPG core rulebook before confirming the reward can leave you with a duplicate or the wrong version. The campaign page, survey item list and creator updates should establish exactly what your pledge supplies.
A simple decision before you click confirm
Pause on the final review screen and verify that the country, address, reward level, variant, add-ons and total all match your intention. Confirm that the original pledge succeeded, identify whether shipping and tax are being collected now, and note the creator’s survey deadline. Once submitted, keep the confirmation and follow the creator’s updates for production and delivery news; the survey completes your fulfillment information, not the manufacturing process.
