How to Use AVIF Images on a WordPress Site

WordPress 6.5+ supports AVIF when your host’s GD or Imagick stack does. This guide covers Site Health checks, uploads, bulk conversion, fallbacks, performance testing and troubleshooting.

Yes—WordPress can use AVIF images, but only when the site runs WordPress 6.5 or newer and the host’s image library can process AVIF. Start with Tools → Site Health → Info → Media Handling. If AVIF appears in the supported-formats list, you can upload an existing .avif file through Media → Add New and insert it like a JPEG or PNG. If it does not appear, ask the host to enable AVIF-capable GD or Imagick, or use a conversion and delivery service that performs the work outside WordPress.

AVIF can substantially reduce image bytes. WordPress Core’s Performance Team says AVIF images can be “up to 50% smaller than JPEGs while maintaining the same image quality” (2024). That is an upper-bound style statement, not a guaranteed saving for every photograph, screenshot, logo or quality setting. Keep a WebP or JPEG/PNG fallback when browser coverage, social sharing or another plugin makes an AVIF-only workflow risky.

What AVIF support in WordPress actually means

AVIF is an image format designed for efficient compression. On a WordPress site, “support” has two separate parts: the server must be able to decode and, where needed, encode AVIF files; visitors’ browsers and other consumers must be able to display the delivered format. A site can pass one test and fail the other.

From WordPress 6.5 onward, Core allows supported AVIF files to be uploaded and used like JPEG or PNG files, provided the hosting environment supports AVIF. Core also retains normal responsive-image behavior, fetch priority and lazy loading for AVIF images. Changing the file format therefore does not remove the performance features WordPress normally adds to image markup.

Compression results depend on the source image, encoder and quality setting. A large photographic hero may save many bytes, while a small graphic or an already-optimized WebP may save little. AVIF also does not correct an unnecessarily large source dimension: a 4,000-pixel image displayed at 800 pixels can still be wasteful regardless of its extension.

Check your WordPress and hosting prerequisites

  1. Confirm the WordPress version. Use WordPress 6.5 or a later release. Earlier releases do not provide the same Core AVIF upload and handling support.
  2. Open the media capability report. In the dashboard, go to Tools → Site Health → Info, expand Media Handling, and inspect the supported-formats list.
  3. Look for AVIF. If AVIF is listed, the server’s active image-processing stack reports support. If it is absent, WordPress cannot be assumed to create thumbnails, edit files or accept uploads reliably.
  4. Identify the image library if support is missing. Hosting commonly uses GD or Imagick. The library must have been built with AVIF capability; merely having the library installed is not enough.
  5. Ask the host for a specific change. Request an AVIF-capable GD or Imagick build and ask which versions and codecs are enabled. Host configurations are not identical, so do not infer support from another site on the same provider.

If the host cannot provide AVIF processing, you can still use files converted elsewhere and upload them only if the server can at least handle the resulting media correctly. For thumbnail generation, editing and automated conversion, a plugin or external service that performs conversion outside the unavailable library may be necessary.

Upload a ready-made AVIF file

This route is best when you have a small number of images or already use an editor that exports AVIF.

  1. Export or convert the source. Produce a valid .avif file with a trusted image editor or conversion tool. Keep the original source file separately so you can change quality or dimensions later.
  2. Upload it in WordPress. Open Media → Add New and select the AVIF file. A successful upload should create a Media Library item just as a JPEG or PNG upload does.
  3. Insert the image. Add it to a post or page using the normal image block or media selector. Do not paste an AVIF URL into a template until you have confirmed that the site’s delivery and fallback rules are intentional.
  4. Inspect generated sizes. Open the attachment details and check whether WordPress created the expected intermediate sizes. A file that uploads but produces no thumbnails often indicates incomplete server-side AVIF encoding.
  5. Verify delivery. View the published page, inspect the browser’s network panel, and confirm the response format, dimensions and cache behavior. Check at least one image rendered in a responsive size rather than testing only the original file.

If WordPress rejects the file immediately, check the version and Media Handling report before changing MIME settings. Manually adding an upload MIME type does not supply the image decoder or encoder that WordPress needs.

Convert an existing Media Library

For a few images: convert outside WordPress

For a small library, convert selected originals outside WordPress, upload the AVIF copies and replace the images in the relevant posts or templates. This gives you direct control over dimensions and quality and makes it easy to compare the result visually. Keep the original JPEG, PNG or WebP files until every reference, responsive size and backup has been checked.

For a large library: use a conversion and delivery plugin

A plugin can automate conversion, create additional formats, negotiate the format sent to each browser and process many attachments. Review its requirements, storage behavior and rollback path before running a bulk job.

Approach Documented capabilities and requirements Important checks
Images to AVIF Converts PNG, JPG, GIF and WebP images. Its listing requires PHP 5.6 or newer and GD or Imagick with AVIF support. It documents a ?no_avif=1 URL option for retrieving the original file. Confirm that the active PHP image library has AVIF support. Test the original-file URL, backups and any CDN or cache rules before replacing production URLs.
Converter for Media Can check browser AVIF support, serve WebP when AVIF is unavailable and use WP-CLI for faster conversion. Its listing says WordPress files and Media Library images must be on the same server. Verify the same-server condition, available disk space, execution limits and whether your cache, CDN or offload layer allows its delivery rules to run.
Manual external conversion You choose the files, dimensions and quality before uploading. No automatic browser negotiation is provided unless you configure it separately. Plan naming, attachment replacement, responsive sizes, social images and a way to restore the originals.

Plugin requirements and interfaces can change, so check the current listing and your host’s PHP and image-library versions before activation. A conversion plugin may create a second file for every original; budget disk space for the conversion run and for future regenerated sizes.

A safe bulk-conversion sequence

  1. Back up the originals and database. A file backup alone may not preserve attachment metadata, captions, featured-image relationships or theme references.
  2. Test on a staging copy. Convert a representative sample: photographs, transparent graphics, screenshots, a large hero image and images used as featured or social-share images.
  3. Record the rollback method. Know whether the tool keeps the original, provides an original-file query option, or can remove generated files without deleting attachments.
  4. Run a limited batch first. Watch PHP execution time, memory, disk usage and server load. A job that works for ten files may time out on thousands.
  5. Check every output class. Inspect full-size files, intermediate responsive sizes, thumbnails, images in feeds and images referenced by block patterns or templates.
  6. Only then process the remaining library. Keep the source files until page templates, backups, cache layers and social workflows have been verified.

Decide whether you need a WebP or JPEG/PNG fallback

Do not assume that every browser, social network, email client or third-party integration accepts AVIF. WordPress Core advises avoiding AVIF for a significant audience using unsupported browsers or adding a browser polyfill. A fallback is also prudent when a plugin, image offload service or social-sharing workflow expects JPEG or PNG.

AVIF-only delivery

An AVIF-only path is simplest when you control the audience and have verified browser, crawler, social and template compatibility. It has the fewest files and rules, but one unsupported consumer can receive a broken image or omit a preview.

AVIF with WebP or original fallback

A negotiated setup serves AVIF to capable browsers and WebP or the original JPEG/PNG to others. The conversion and delivery plugin must make that decision from the request, and your cache must vary or key responses correctly so one browser’s format is not served to another. Test the actual response rather than trusting the file extension shown in the Media Library.

Use the original for high-risk workflows

Keep JPEG or PNG for Open Graph images, downloadable assets, email templates or partner feeds when those consumers have uncertain format support. You can still serve AVIF on ordinary page images while preserving a universally understood source for those specific paths.

Measure quality and performance instead of assuming savings

Use representative files and the quality settings you intend to deploy. Compare the visual result at normal viewing size and at 100 percent, paying particular attention to text in screenshots, fine foliage, gradients, skin tones, transparency edges and dark areas. Compression artifacts that are invisible in a thumbnail can be obvious in a full-screen lightbox.

  • Transfer size: compare the delivered bytes for the same responsive slot, not only the original upload.
  • Decode behavior: check load and decode time on a lower-powered phone or computer; fewer bytes do not guarantee faster rendering if decoding is more demanding.
  • Largest Contentful Paint: measure the page with the actual hero image, fetch-priority behavior and cache state you expect in production.
  • Responsive selection: confirm that srcset and sizes still select an appropriate width. AVIF cannot compensate for an oversized candidate.
  • Lazy loading: ensure below-the-fold images remain lazy-loaded and that the main above-the-fold image is not delayed by an incorrect loading attribute.
  • Storage: count originals, AVIF files, WebP fallbacks and generated intermediate sizes when estimating disk use.

WordPress Core’s “up to 50% smaller than JPEGs” statement describes a possible maximum-style result at equivalent quality. Treat it as a reason to test, not as a site-wide promise. Report your own before-and-after measurements by image class and quality setting.

Troubleshoot common AVIF failures

The upload is rejected

  • Confirm WordPress is 6.5 or newer.
  • Recheck Tools → Site Health → Info → Media Handling for AVIF.
  • Ask whether GD or Imagick was compiled with AVIF decode support and whether the PHP process used by WordPress is the one you checked.
  • Validate the file by opening it in another image application or converting a fresh sample; a damaged or nonstandard file can mimic a server problem.
  • Do not broaden MIME rules as a substitute for missing codec support.

The file uploads, but thumbnails or edits fail

The server may decode the original while lacking complete AVIF encoding support. Ask the host which library and AVIF codec are enabled. If encoding is unavailable, create derivatives with a conversion plugin or external service, then upload or deliver those derivatives instead of relying on WordPress to generate them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visitors see a broken image

Inspect the network response’s MIME type and status code, then test the fallback URL in a browser without AVIF support. Check that a cache or CDN is not serving an AVIF response to every user and that the negotiated response varies correctly. Add WebP or JPEG/PNG fallback delivery when unsupported browsers or integrations are part of your audience.

Bulk conversion stops or never starts

  • Check PHP execution and memory limits and the plugin’s batch settings.
  • Confirm free disk space for generated files and temporary processing data.
  • Use WP-CLI where the selected tool supports it and your host permits command-line execution.
  • For tools that require files on the same server, verify that Media Library files have not been moved to a separate storage service.
  • Run a small batch and inspect logs before restarting a large job, so you do not create duplicate derivatives.

The page still serves the original format

Confirm that the plugin is configured to rewrite delivery, not merely generate AVIF files. Then inspect theme templates, hard-coded image URLs, CDN transformations, page caches and image-offload layers; any of them can bypass the plugin’s rewrite rules. Purge the relevant caches only after confirming the desired URL and response.

Choose an implementation using these decision points

Question If the answer is yes If the answer is no
Does Site Health list AVIF? Core can recognize AVIF on the current server stack; test upload and thumbnail generation. Ask the host to enable AVIF-capable GD or Imagick, or plan external conversion.
Do you have only a handful of images? External conversion and manual upload are usually easiest to control. Evaluate automated bulk conversion and its storage impact.
Must unsupported browsers receive an image? Use content negotiation with WebP or JPEG/PNG fallback. An AVIF-only path may be acceptable after compatibility testing.
Are files on a separate object store or CDN? Choose a tool that supports that architecture and test cache variation. Tools requiring same-server files remain viable.
Do you need command-line throughput? Use a solution with documented WP-CLI support and monitor the job. Use controlled batches in the dashboard or convert externally.
Do social or feed systems consume the images? Keep a JPEG/PNG path for those consumers unless their AVIF support is verified. You can focus fallback testing on normal page browsers.

Production checklist

  • WordPress is 6.5 or newer.
  • AVIF appears under Tools → Site Health → Info → Media Handling, or your chosen converter handles processing elsewhere.
  • Original files and attachment metadata are backed up.
  • Representative images have been checked for artifacts, transparency and text clarity.
  • Responsive sizes, lazy loading and fetch-priority behavior remain correct.
  • AVIF-capable and fallback browser responses have been inspected in the network panel.
  • WebP or JPEG/PNG fallbacks cover unsupported browsers and non-browser consumers where necessary.
  • Disk, PHP limits, WP-CLI behavior and same-server requirements have been verified for bulk jobs.
  • CDN, cache, theme and image-offload rules have been tested so they do not bypass negotiation.
  • A rollback path remains available until pages, feeds, social images and backups have been checked.
