How to Use ARIA Snapshots for Accessibility Testing in Playwright

Playwright ARIA snapshots assert accessible structure in YAML. Learn to scope, maintain, and interpret them without treating a passing test as a full accessibility audit.

Use Playwright ARIA snapshots to assert that a page or component exposes the accessible roles, names, hierarchy, text, and relevant states your test expects. Keep the snapshot scoped to the interface the test owns, choose how strict the child matching should be, and review every generated update before accepting it. A passing snapshot is a useful structural check—not proof that an interface is fully accessible.

How do I use ARIA snapshots in Playwright?

An ARIA snapshot is a YAML representation of the accessible structure exposed for a page or locator. Playwright can compare that structure with a template using toMatchAriaSnapshot(). The page assertion was added in Playwright v1.60, so check the version installed in your project before using it; confirm the matching locator API for your language binding and version in the Playwright API reference.

For a small assertion, keep the template inline:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('account settings exposes its main controls', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/account/settings');

  await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toMatchAriaSnapshot(`
    - heading "Account settings"
    - button "Save changes"
  `);
});

The assertion describes what users of assistive technology should encounter in the selected scope. It is not a screenshot or a visual comparison.

How should I choose snapshot scope and strictness?

Use page scope for page-wide structure

A page-level assertion is appropriate when the test owns a broad structural contract, such as the primary landmarks and headings on a page. It can catch broader changes, but unrelated additions or reorganizations can also cause a mismatch.

Use a locator for a component or region

Prefer a locator when the test is about one component, such as a dialog, menu, or settings panel. This keeps the contract focused and reduces failures caused by changes elsewhere. Select the scope through a meaningful locator, such as getByRole('dialog', { name: 'Confirm deletion' }), then assert the snapshot for that locator.

Choose matching rules to fit the contract

Matching is order-sensitive. A template that omits a name or attribute does not constrain that detail, which allows partial matching. Child matching can be made stricter when a complete child list is part of the intended contract:

  • contain is the default: the expected children must be present, while additional children may be allowed.
  • equal requires the expected child list to match exactly at that level.
  • deep-equal applies exact child matching through the nested structure.

Use the least strict rule that still expresses the user-relevant contract. Exact matching can catch unintended structure changes, but it can make tests brittle when harmless additions are expected. The documented matcher syntax and behavior are in the Playwright ARIA snapshots guide.

How do I create and maintain an ARIA snapshot?

  1. Put the interface in a meaningful state. Navigate to the page or perform the interaction that opens a dialog, selects a tab, or reveals the region you want to check.
  2. Choose the scope and contract. Decide whether the assertion covers the page or a locator, then identify which roles, names, properties, text, and parent-child relationships matter.
  3. Inspect the exposed structure. Use Playwright’s code generator, start with an empty template, or call page.ariaSnapshot() or locator.ariaSnapshot() to inspect the current structure. Treat generated output as a draft rather than a specification of correct behavior.
  4. Choose where the template lives. Inline YAML works well for a short assertion near its test. A named .aria.yml file can be easier to review when the snapshot is substantial or maintained separately.
  5. Run the test and review mismatches. A mismatch may indicate an unintended regression, an intentional UI change, or a template that asserts too much. Inspect the accessible structure and the interface behavior before changing the expectation.
  6. Update only for an intentional change. Run npx playwright test --update-snapshots when the accessible structure changed deliberately. Review the resulting patch before accepting it. Playwright documents patch, three-way, and overwrite update-source methods; choose an update method that preserves the review your project requires.

For a larger template, use a named file rather than obscuring a long contract inside test code. The snapshot guide documents file-based templates and update behavior: ARIA snapshots and snapshot updates.

What does an ARIA snapshot test actually check?

A passing assertion means the accessible structure represented to Playwright matches the template under the chosen matching rules. Depending on the template, that can check exposed roles, accessible names, hierarchy, text, and represented states or properties.

It does not by itself establish that keyboard interaction works, focus is managed correctly, visual presentation is usable, a particular screen reader announces the interface as intended, or every applicable accessibility requirement is met. Combine snapshots with interaction tests and appropriate accessibility evaluation. W3C explains that user agents and assistive technologies use accessibility semantics in determining how content is presented and operated; a snapshot is one check of the structure, not that full experience. See the WAI-ARIA 1.2 Recommendation.

Use native semantics where they fit

ARIA snapshots can expose a missing or unexpected role, but adding ARIA is not automatically the fix. Prefer native HTML semantics when an appropriate host-language element provides the behavior and meaning. WAI-ARIA is intended to supply missing semantics or enhance semantics where needed, not to replace suitable native elements. A correct role and name also do not substitute for implementing the expected interaction.

Common problems and fixes

The matcher is unavailable

Check the installed Playwright version and language binding. The page assertion API reference lists toMatchAriaSnapshot as added in v1.60; an older installation may not expose it. Upgrade deliberately if appropriate, then check the corresponding locator API for that version and binding.

The test fails after a harmless addition

Review the child matching mode and template scope. If the contract only requires certain expected children and should tolerate unrelated additions, default containment may be more appropriate than exact matching. Avoid weakening the assertion if the added node changes the user-relevant structure.

The test fails after a deliberate UI change

Inspect the mismatch and confirm the new structure is intentional and accessible. Then update the snapshot with npx playwright test --update-snapshots and review the patch rather than accepting it blindly.

The snapshot passes but interaction is broken

Add tests for the actual user operation, including keyboard use and focus behavior where relevant. A structural match does not prove those behaviors work.

The snapshot reflects an awkward or incorrect role

Check the underlying markup and semantics before editing the expected YAML. Use a suitable native element when available; add or enhance ARIA semantics only where native semantics do not express the intended interface.

If you need rendered website captures alongside accessibility tests, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace Playwright ARIA assertions. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, capture a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an ARIA snapshot as a complete accessibility audit?

No. It checks the represented accessible structure against a template; it does not establish that all accessibility requirements or real user interactions work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every ARIA snapshot be an exact match?

No. Choose containment or exact child matching according to the contract and whether unrelated additions should be allowed.
