Use Cypress to drive your application, then add Applitools Eyes checkpoints at the interface states you want to protect. Eyes compares each captured state with a saved visual baseline: the first run establishes the baseline, while later runs report visual differences for review. Keep Cypress assertions for functional behavior; use Eyes to catch changes in what the browser renders.
What a Cypress screenshot checkpoint does
A visual checkpoint captures the rendered application at a particular point in a test and compares it with a baseline. Cypress remains responsible for navigation and interactions; Eyes adds visual comparison to that flow. Applitools describes this as a way to add visual testing to an existing Cypress test, with baselines hosted by Applitools. See Applitools’ overview of visual UI testing and its Cypress visual testing page.

Install and configure the Cypress integration
Applitools’ Cypress tutorial, published December 17, 2021, gives these setup commands:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesnpm install @applitools/eyes-cypress --save-dev
npx eyes-setup
The tutorial says the setup command configures the Eyes Cypress SDK as a plugin and adds Cypress commands; it may also import TypeScript definitions. Because those instructions are from 2021, treat them as a starting point rather than a guarantee for a current project. Check the installed SDK’s documentation for its supported Cypress versions, package instructions, configuration format, and current command signatures before copying a legacy setup into a new suite. The tutorial is available at Applitools’ Cypress visual-testing guide.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Choose checkpoints that represent useful UI states
Place checkpoints after the application has reached a stable, meaningful state—not merely after an arbitrary delay. A login flow, for example, can capture the login screen and then capture the dashboard after a successful sign-in. These checkpoints let the test compare both the form’s appearance and the resulting page.
- Use Cypress to open the route and wait for the page state your test needs.
- Capture the initial screen at the login form.
- Enter credentials and submit using the existing Cypress interaction steps.
- Wait until the authenticated dashboard is ready, then capture a second checkpoint.
- Keep explicit Cypress assertions for required behavior, such as a successful navigation or the presence of expected text.
The precise Eyes command names and lifecycle calls depend on the SDK version installed in the project. The 2021 tutorial demonstrates opening Eyes in a test, capturing checkpoints, and closing Eyes; verify its examples against current SDK documentation before adopting their syntax.

Understand first runs, later differences, and review
The initial run creates baseline images. Subsequent runs compare their checkpoints with those saved baselines and report visual differences. A reported difference is a review item, not automatically a defect: decide whether it reflects an intentional product change or an unwanted regression. Accept an intentional change to update the baseline; reject a bug-indicating change to retain the previous baseline. Applitools explains the baseline workflow in its visual UI testing overview.
- Expected design change: review the changed rendering and accept it if it is the intended new appearance.
- Unexpected visual break: reject the change so the prior baseline remains the reference while the issue is fixed.
- Unclear difference: inspect the affected state and determine whether the test captured the intended page before changing the baseline.
Use visual checks alongside functional assertions
A functional assertion checks a programmed condition—for example, that text exists or an element is present. A visual check asks whether the rendered interface still looks as expected. Those checks catch different classes of problems. Applitools’ tutorial illustrates how a broken image can escape example text assertions while still appearing as a visual difference. Keep both kinds of checks where they provide distinct coverage rather than expecting a screenshot comparison to replace behavioral tests.

Local Cypress coverage and cloud-rendered browsers
A Cypress test ordinarily runs in its configured browser environment. Applitools describes Ultrafast Grid as extending Cypress visual checks to cloud-rendered browsers and viewports, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and mobile viewports. This is an Applitools-stated capability; the actual targets available to a project can depend on its configuration and account. For details, consult the Applitools Cypress page.
Troubleshooting common setup and review problems
- The setup command or package instructions do not match your project: the cited installation workflow comes from a 2021 tutorial. Check the current Eyes SDK guidance and compatibility for your installed Cypress version rather than assuming the old setup is unchanged.
- A checkpoint reports a difference on every run: inspect whether the test is capturing the intended stable state. Checkpoint placement and page readiness matter; do not accept a baseline until you have reviewed what changed.
- A visible defect is not caught by a functional assertion: add a visual checkpoint at the relevant state, while retaining assertions for required behavior. Text or element-presence checks do not establish that the complete rendered screen looks correct.
- A visual difference is intentional: review it and update the baseline only when the changed appearance is the desired result; otherwise preserve the old baseline and investigate.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than a Cypress visual-regression test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This does not replace Eyes baselines or Cypress assertions; it is an alternative for producing screenshots directly.

Frequently asked questions
Does a visual difference automatically mean a test failed because of a bug?
No. Review the difference to determine whether it is an intentional UI change or an unwanted regression before accepting or rejecting the baseline update.
Can Eyes replace Cypress functional assertions?
No. Eyes checks rendered appearance; Cypress assertions check explicit behavior or conditions. Use the two approaches for the different questions they answer.
