How to Use Applitools Eyes for Website Visual Testing

Applitools Eyes adds screenshot checkpoints to browser automation. Learn how to choose an SDK, establish baselines, configure comparisons, and review visual diffs safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applitools Eyes adds visual checks to automated browser tests: your test drives the site to a meaningful state, an Eyes checkpoint captures it, and Eyes compares the result with a saved baseline. Choose the Eyes SDK for your existing test framework, add named checkpoints, then review differences in Eyes Test Manager before accepting any new baseline.

How Applitools Eyes visual testing works

Eyes is a visual-testing service integrated into automated tests through an SDK. Your existing test still navigates and interacts with the application; Eyes adds screenshot-based assertions at selected points. The captured screenshots are sent to Eyes Server and compared with stored baselines. You review the results in Eyes Test Manager.

Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing that checks whether previously correct screens have changed unexpectedly: Overview of Visual UI Testing. A changed screenshot is a difference to investigate, not automatically a bug: it may reflect either an intentional interface update or a regression.

Choose the Eyes SDK for your test stack

Start with the framework and language already used by your tests rather than choosing an SDK in isolation. Applitools lists web integrations for Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, WebdriverIO, TestCafe, Puppeteer, and other options in its SDK selector.

  • Use a page-testing integration when your automated tests exercise full pages and user flows. The Playwright integration supports page and element checks.
  • Use the Storybook integration when the primary need is visual checks of individual stories or components. Its quick start uses @applitools/eyes-storybook.
  • Check the selected SDK’s current setup instructions, runner requirements, and browser or device targets. Setup APIs and prerequisites are not universal across Eyes integrations.

Add visual checks to Playwright

The following illustrates the documented Playwright fixture pattern. It navigates to a page, then checks the rendered state under a descriptive checkpoint name:

import { test } from '@applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture';

test('visual check', async ({ page, eyes }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await eyes.check('Home page');
});

Use the current Playwright integration documentation to confirm SDK installation, runner setup, and configuration for your project. The snippet shows the integration shape; it is not a substitute for the setup required by your chosen runner.

Place checkpoints at useful states

Navigate and perform the actions needed to establish the state that matters before calling eyes.check(). A checkpoint should correspond to a useful visual assertion—such as a page after navigation or a component after an interaction—not an arbitrary point in the test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give checkpoints stable, recognizable names so a reviewer can understand what the screenshot represents. If the whole page is not relevant, the Playwright integration documents checks of a locator as a region, as well as full-page capture. Scope should match the behavior you want to protect.

Control how differences are compared

Eyes provides match levels and region controls for tailoring comparisons. The Playwright documentation covers match levels, ignored regions, floating regions, and region capture. These options help deal with expected variation or moving content, but should not hide areas where a genuine UI regression could occur.

Set up credentials and run a first baseline

Setup depends on your integration. In the Selenium Java quickstart, the example requires an Applitools account and API key, JDK 8 or newer, Maven, current Chrome, and a ChromeDriver whose major version matches Chrome. Those are prerequisites for that example, not general requirements for every Eyes SDK. The quickstart uses the APPLITOOLS_API_KEY environment variable; follow the corresponding Selenium Java quickstart or the instructions for your own SDK.

  1. Select the Eyes integration that matches the framework and language of the test you intend to extend.
  2. Install and configure that integration according to its current quickstart, including the API key and any runner or browser prerequisites.
  3. Keep the functional test’s navigation and interactions, then add a named visual checkpoint after the target state is ready.
  4. Run the test. In the Selenium Java quickstart, a first run without a baseline is marked “New” and its screenshot is saved as the baseline.
  5. Run the same test again to compare new captures with their saved baselines.

How visual baselines and diffs work

A baseline is the approved visual reference for a checkpoint. Later runs compare their captures against that reference. The first run may create a baseline rather than report a difference, as described in the Selenium Java quickstart. When the interface changes intentionally, a reviewer can approve the updated appearance as the new expected state; when the difference reveals a defect, reject it and report the regression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review each meaningful difference before changing a baseline. Broad or automatic acceptance can turn an unintended change into the reference future runs treat as correct.

Use match levels carefully

The Selenium Java quickstart describes Strict as the default match level, Ignore Colors as a way to disregard color changes, and Layout as a comparison focused on overall structure and relative positioning. These are comparison controls, not a replacement for reviewing the actual diff. Pick the least permissive setting that fits the intended assertion, and ensure that meaningful visual changes remain visible to reviewers.

Review visual diffs safely

  1. Open the test results in Eyes Test Manager and inspect the changed areas in the context of the checkpoint.
  2. Decide whether the difference is an intended design change, expected variation, or a defect.
  3. Accept a changed baseline only when the new appearance is intended and has been checked; reject a regression and report it.
  4. Adjust checkpoint scope, match level, or region controls only when they represent the assertion you actually want. Re-run the test to confirm the revised check still catches meaningful changes.

Expand browser and device coverage

Once checkpoints work in the primary test environment, consider additional browser or device targets if they matter to your users. The Selenium Java guide shows configuring browser and device targets, but available targets depend on account and service configuration. Check the current target list in the official docs and confirm it with your Applitools administrator rather than assuming every target is available to every setup.

Service deployment and plan details

Applitools documents cloud, dedicated-cloud, and on-premises service configurations in its system overview. If network, security, or deployment constraints affect your test environment, verify which configuration is supported for your organization with current documentation and your administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Applitools pricing result retrieved on October 3, 2026 listed Starter at $667 per month when paid annually, with 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints and included capabilities. This is a dated product-plan snapshot, not a durable quote; verify the live pricing page for current rates and allowances before budgeting.

Common setup and review problems

The test runs, but Eyes cannot authenticate

Check that the API key is configured using the variable or credential mechanism required by your selected SDK. The Selenium Java and Storybook quick starts both describe using APPLITOOLS_API_KEY; confirm the exact setup for your integration and ensure the process running the tests can read it.

The first run shows a new result rather than a comparison

That is expected when no baseline exists for the checkpoint. Review the captured state before establishing it as the reference; later runs can then compare against it.

Repeated diffs appear around changing data or moving content

First determine whether the changed content is meaningful to the visual assertion. Where appropriate, narrow the checkpoint to a relevant region or configure documented match and region controls for dynamic areas. Do not mask a region merely because it is inconvenient if a real defect there matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser setup fails before a checkpoint

Prerequisites depend on the SDK. For the Selenium Java quickstart specifically, verify the JDK, Maven, Chrome, and matching-major-version ChromeDriver requirements. For other frameworks, use their own quickstart rather than applying Selenium’s requirements by default.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than visual-regression checkpoints inside an existing test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. This captures a screenshot; it does not replace Eyes baselines and diff review in an automated visual-regression workflow. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Applitools Eyes replace functional browser tests?

No. Eyes adds visual assertions to tests that still navigate and interact with the application; it complements rather than replaces that functional flow.

Can I use Eyes to check one component instead of a whole page?

Yes. The Playwright integration documents region or locator checks as well as full-page capture; choose the scope that matches the UI behavior you want to protect.
