To use Apple Pay on an iPhone, add an eligible debit or credit card to Apple Wallet, complete any verification your card issuer requires, then authenticate at checkout. In stores, hold the top of the iPhone near a compatible contactless reader; in supported apps and websites, choose Apple Pay and confirm the payment. Availability depends on your region, card issuer, payment network, and merchant.
How do you add a card to Apple Wallet?

Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the add-card control.

Complete the verification steps shown on screen. Your issuer may ask you to confirm by text message, answer security questions, or use its app.

Adding a card is subject to issuer approval: not every card is eligible, and scanning its details does not necessarily finish setup. If you cannot add it, check with the issuer about Apple Pay support and any approval required. Apple’s card setup instructions explain the available steps.
How do you pay in a store?

Authenticate with Touch ID, then hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader until you see Done or a checkmark.
A contactless symbol is a useful clue, but it does not by itself confirm that Apple Pay will work. The merchant must accept your card’s payment network, and the reader must have NFC contactless payments enabled. If another app is set as the default contactless app on a device that supports that option, Apple says you can open Wallet, select a card, and authenticate to pay. The app or website must offer Apple Pay at checkout. Apple also describes a code-scanning payment flow for some purchases in third-party browsers or on other devices, but it requires compatible software and devices, a participating merchant, and availability in the relevant market; it is not a universal checkout option. Where will Apple Pay work?
Apple Pay is not available in every country or region, and card eligibility depends on participating issuers. For in-store purchases, the merchant must accept the card’s network and have NFC contactless enabled on the payment device. For online purchases, the merchant must offer Apple Pay. Third-party browser and cross-device flows have additional compatibility requirements.
Because support depends on your location, bank, exact card, device, and merchant, check card eligibility with your issuer and confirm acceptance with the merchant. Apple’s regional availability page, published December 16, 2024, lists where Apple Pay can be used and notes that features may change.

What does Apple say about Apple Pay privacy and security?
Apple says, “Your actual card number is never shared with merchants, and each transaction uses a unique security code.” This is Apple’s description of how Apple Pay handles payment credentials, not an independent audit. Details are in Apple’s Apple Pay and Wallet overview.

In an overview dated February 18, 2021, Apple Platform Security said Apple Pay does not collect transaction information that can be tied back to the user and described payment transactions as occurring between the user, merchant, and card issuer. That statement reflects Apple’s account of its service; it should not be read as a third-party assessment or as a claim about every kind of payment-related data. Can you use Apple Pay for transit without unlocking your iPhone?
Some compatible transit cards and other eligible cards, passes, or keys can be assigned Express Mode. When supported and set up, Express Mode may let you use the selected item without waking or unlocking the iPhone or authenticating. The option and setup depend on the card, transit network, and region; it is a special transit-related feature, not the standard process for store purchases.
