How to Use Apple Intelligence to Summarize Web Pages, Messages, and Notifications

Apple Intelligence summarizes Safari webpages, unread Messages conversations and long or stacked notifications through separate controls. Here is how each works, what Siri can and cannot do, and how to troubleshoot missing options.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Apple devices do not use one universal Siri command to summarize everything you see. Apple Intelligence provides separate controls for Safari webpages, unread conversations in Messages, and notifications. Use the Summarize control in Safari, the conversation summaries that Messages presents when available, and notification summaries in the notification system. Siri is the voice assistant within the same platform, but Apple’s current documentation does not verify a single spoken command that reliably invokes all three features.

The exact controls depend on your iPhone model, operating-system version, language, and region. Check those requirements before troubleshooting a missing summary.

What Siri and Apple Intelligence actually do

Apple Intelligence is the system of generative features behind these summaries. Siri is one way to interact with Apple Intelligence, but the documented summary features are primarily exposed inside the apps and system surfaces where the content appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because a webpage, an unread message conversation, and a notification are different kinds of data. Safari can offer a summary for the page you are viewing. Messages can summarize unread conversations. The notification system can condense long or stacked alerts and surface key details. None of those descriptions establishes that Siri can retrieve any arbitrary item and summarize it on demand by voice.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple announced the initial notification and message-summary behavior on 28 October 2024. Its description of Mail is separate: long Mail threads can also be summarized, but that should not be confused with the Messages feature.

What is documented and what is not

  • Documented: Safari has a Summarize control for webpages when Apple Intelligence is available.
  • Documented: Apple’s iPhone guide lists summaries of unread conversations in Messages.
  • Documented: notification summaries can condense long or stacked alerts and highlight important details, including activity in a group chat.
  • Not established by Apple’s current instructions: one universal spoken Siri phrase that performs all three operations.

Use the in-app or system control first. Treat any voice phrase you find elsewhere as version-dependent unless the current Siri instructions on your device explicitly support it.

Check eligibility before looking for a missing control

Apple Intelligence is not available on every Apple device or in every location. Apple’s current iPhone guidance lists the following iPhone examples for the iOS 27 generation:

Requirement What Apple currently lists Why it matters
iPhone hardware iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later Older iPhone models may not show Apple Intelligence summary controls.
Operating system The current Apple Intelligence features for the iOS 27 family A feature can be absent until the required release is installed.
Language Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese Changing the device or Siri language to an unsupported choice can hide or disable features.
Region Availability varies by region and language Apple warns that some features and devices are not offered everywhere.
Other Apple devices Apple also lists compatible iPads and Macs in its platform materials The same feature name may appear on another device, but the model and operating-system requirements still apply.

Apple’s requirements change as releases roll out. If a control is missing, compare your exact model, software version, language, and region with the current Apple support page rather than assuming that every Apple Intelligence feature is available on every compatible device.

Summarize a webpage in Safari

Safari’s webpage summary is the clearest documented path for this topic. It uses a control named Summarize and requires Apple Intelligence.

Step-by-step

  1. Update and verify eligibility. Install the required iOS release for your device and confirm that Apple Intelligence is available in your language and region.
  2. Open the page in Safari. Load the article or other webpage you want to condense. A page must be fully available to Safari before a summary can be generated.
  3. Open Safari’s current page controls. Look for the control that Apple labels Summarize. Apple can move controls between releases, so follow the label shown on your device rather than an older screenshot.
  4. Tap Summarize. Safari generates a condensed view of the page. Read it as an overview, not as a replacement for the source.
  5. Return to the original page for details. Follow the page’s headings, links, figures, and qualifications when a decision depends on exact wording or numbers.
  6. Try another eligible page if the control is absent. Confirm Apple Intelligence first, then test a normally accessible article. A missing control can indicate an unsupported device, language, region, software release, or page condition.

What Safari’s summary is useful for

  • Getting the main subject and conclusion before deciding whether to read the full article.
  • Finding the section of a long page that deserves closer attention.
  • Reviewing an article when you have limited time, while keeping the original open for verification.

Safari limitations to remember

A summary is generated from the page Safari can access. It may not represent content hidden behind a sign-in, loaded only after interaction, embedded in media, or omitted by the page’s structure. Do not use a summary alone to verify legal, medical, financial, safety, or other high-consequence claims.

Summarize unread conversations in Messages

Apple lists Messages summaries as a conversation feature, not as a general-purpose command for any text Siri can see. The documented use case is summarizing unread conversations so you can understand what happened before opening every message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use it

  1. Confirm Apple Intelligence is available. The Messages summary option depends on the same device, software, language, and regional eligibility described above.
  2. Open Messages. Look in the conversation list for the summary presentation Apple provides for unread activity. The wording and placement can change between iOS releases.
  3. Read the generated overview. Use it to identify the topic, decisions, questions, or next action in the unread conversation.
  4. Open the conversation itself. Check the original messages before replying, forwarding information, or relying on a detail that could be misunderstood without context.
  5. Use the full thread when precision matters. A summary is not a transcript and should not replace timestamps, attachments, reactions, or earlier messages that establish context.

What this feature does not promise

  • It does not establish that Siri can summarize any arbitrary text on request.
  • It does not mean every conversation receives a summary; Apple’s guide specifically describes unread conversation summaries.
  • It does not make a summary more authoritative than the underlying messages.

Summarize notifications

Notification summaries address alerts rather than the full content of an app. Apple describes them as a way to surface key details from long or stacked notifications, such as a busy group chat, so the important point is visible without opening every alert individually.

Turn on and use notification summaries

  1. Check Apple Intelligence eligibility. Notification summarization is subject to the same hardware, operating-system, language, and region limits.
  2. Open the notification settings on your device. Search Settings for the notification-summary or Apple Intelligence control if the label is not where an older guide shows it. Apple changes menu organization between releases.
  3. Enable the summary option if it is available. Keep ordinary notifications enabled for apps whose alerts you must see in full.
  4. Review the grouped alert when it appears. The system may show a concise statement containing the central details of several alerts or a long alert.
  5. Tap the summary to inspect the originals. Open the relevant app or expand the individual notifications when you need names, times, attachments, links, or the exact wording.

Why a notification may not be summarized

Short alerts may not need condensation. Some apps or notification types may not be eligible, and a summary may not appear when the feature is disabled or unavailable for your device, language, or region. A notification summary also reflects what the alert contains; it cannot recover information that the app did not include in the notification.

Safari, Messages, and notifications compared

Content Where the summary appears Typical trigger What to verify in the original
Webpage Safari’s page controls You open an eligible page and choose Summarize Headings, links, quotations, data, exceptions, and content hidden from the summary
Unread message conversation Messages conversation list or thread presentation Messages has unread activity and Apple Intelligence is available Who said what, chronology, attachments, reactions, and commitments
Long or stacked notification The system notification presentation Notification summaries are enabled and the alert is suitable for condensation Exact alert wording, sender, time, link, attachment, and the underlying app content

The interfaces are intentionally different: Safari summarizes a page you are viewing, Messages summarizes an unread conversation, and Notifications condense alerts. Choosing the correct surface is more reliable than trying to force all three through Siri.

Where Siri fits in—and why voice commands are uncertain

Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes Siri AI as rolling out in beta in English across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. Apple also says the beta is not initially available in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Those rollout details are separate from the already documented summary controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Siri AI is a beta and availability is regional, a voice interaction that works on one device or software build may not work on another. Apple’s published material does not provide a verified spoken command covering Safari webpages, Messages conversations, and notifications together. Do not present phrases such as “Hey Siri, summarize this” as guaranteed instructions. If you test a phrase, treat the result as an optional convenience and fall back to the visible control in the relevant app.

Troubleshooting missing summaries

The Summarize control is missing in Safari

  • Confirm that the iPhone is an Apple Intelligence-supported model, such as an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later.
  • Install the iOS release required for your device and restart Safari after updating.
  • Check the device language and Siri language against Apple’s supported-language list.
  • Check regional availability; Apple states that features can vary by region.
  • Try a normally accessible webpage and make sure it has finished loading.
  • Use the label currently displayed by Safari instead of relying on instructions for an older release.

Messages shows no conversation summary

  • Make sure there is unread conversation activity; Apple describes this feature specifically for unread conversations.
  • Verify Apple Intelligence eligibility and that Messages is using a supported language.
  • Open the full conversation if you need an immediate answer; a summary is not guaranteed for every thread.
  • Do not interpret the absence of a summary as evidence that the messages themselves were deleted or lost.

Notifications remain unsummarized

  • Confirm that notification summaries are enabled in the current Settings layout.
  • Check whether the alert is long or stacked enough for the system to condense.
  • Open the original notification when the sender, time, attachment, or exact wording matters.
  • Review device, language, operating-system, and regional eligibility before changing app-specific notification settings.

Siri does not respond to a summary request

That result does not prove that Apple Intelligence is broken. Siri’s AI rollout is a separate, version- and region-dependent beta, and Apple has not documented one universal voice command for these three summary types. Use Safari’s Summarize control, the Messages summary presentation, or the notification summary setting instead.

Privacy and security considerations

Apple describes Apple Intelligence as combining on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute. When Private Cloud Compute handles a request, Apple says personal data is not stored or accessible to Apple. This is an architectural description, not a promise that every summary request is processed entirely on the device.

Messages has an additional protection scope: Apple says iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted in transit and that messages on iOS and iPadOS are encrypted on the device. That statement applies to those messaging protections; it does not establish identical handling for every notification or every app whose alert appears on your screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical privacy habits

  • Read the original source before sharing a generated summary that contains private or sensitive information.
  • Remember that a notification can expose details on a locked screen even when you do not open the app; adjust notification previews if that matters for your situation.
  • Keep the operating system current so you receive Apple’s security and feature updates.
  • Use the full conversation or webpage when the context is confidential, disputed, or consequential.

How to use summaries without losing context

For a long article

  1. Generate the Safari summary to identify the article’s subject and main conclusion.
  2. Open the sections that contain evidence, qualifications, dates, or instructions.
  3. Compare important numbers and claims with the original page before acting on them.

For a busy group chat

  1. Read the Messages overview to see the apparent topic and latest action.
  2. Open the thread and check the sequence of replies, corrections, and attachments.
  3. Reply only after confirming whether the summary omitted a question directed specifically at you.

For a stream of alerts

  1. Use the notification summary to triage which app needs attention.
  2. Expand the relevant notification to recover the sender, time, and exact request.
  3. Open the app before taking an action that depends on a complete record.

The safest mental model is triage, not replacement. Summaries reduce the amount you must scan first; the underlying page, conversation, or app remains the authority for details.
