Use the Appium CLI’s extension-specific Doctor check to find missing prerequisites for an installed driver or plugin. For Android with UiAutomator2, run appium driver doctor uiautomator2. Its results cover only the checks supplied by that driver; a clean report does not guarantee that a particular device, app, capability, or test session will work.
What Appium Doctor does now
“Appium Doctor” is best understood as prerequisite diagnostics integrated into the Appium CLI for an installed driver or plugin. The general command form is appium {driver|plugin} doctor <extension-name>. The extension determines which prerequisites are checked, so begin with the driver or plugin you actually use.

The older standalone appium-doctor command and the @appium/doctor package are deprecated. Current guidance is to use an extension’s Doctor check when it provides one, rather than follow old standalone installation instructions. The standalone repository and the npm package notice document those legacy paths.

Run the driver’s Doctor check from a terminal where the Appium CLI is available:
appium driver doctor uiautomator2 -
Review the reported prerequisite checks and address any required fixes. The UiAutomator2 quickstart distinguishes required fixes from optional ones. It notes: “This guide has focused on essential requirements, so Appium Doctor may suggest one or more optional fixes.”

Run the command again after resolving a reported issue. Then start Appium and test a session against the intended device and app; Doctor is not an end-to-end session validator.

Understand the result and its limits
A reported missing prerequisite
Use the individual check and the driver’s setup guide to determine which platform tool or configuration is missing. Resolve that specific issue, then rerun Doctor to see whether the check now passes.
No output or no checks
Not every driver or plugin supplies Doctor checks. Appium’s tools documentation says the command shows no results when an extension has no checks. No output in that case is not proof that the whole environment is configured correctly; use the extension’s official setup guide and verify its platform requirements independently. A clean report
A clean report means the checks provided by that extension found its checked prerequisites satisfied. It does not verify every device connection, app path, desired capability, permission, network condition, or test-specific behavior. Validate those by starting the intended Appium session and running a minimal test.

Appium’s CLI reference documents the --json option for Doctor, which is useful when another tool needs to consume the output. For exact option placement and behavior, consult the current extension CLI reference.
Separate Appium server requirements from driver requirements
The Appium project lists macOS, Linux, or Windows as supported operating systems for the server, and Node.js versions ^20.19.0 || ^22.12.0 || >=24.0.0, with an LTS release recommended, plus npm >=10. These are base server requirements, not a complete Android or iOS setup checklist. Drivers can require additional SDKs and platform tooling, so check the requirements for the installed driver as well as the server’s system requirements.

Troubleshoot common Doctor workflow problems

An old tutorial says to install
appium-doctor. That is the deprecated standalone route. Use the Appium CLI’s driver or plugin Doctor command when the installed extension supplies checks. -
The command reports no checks. The extension may not include Doctor diagnostics. Follow its official setup guide and check required platform tools directly.

Doctor passes but the session fails. Check session-specific details such as the target device, app, capabilities, and driver setup. Doctor only validates its own prerequisite checks; inspect the Appium server and test output for the failing session.

A check remains unsatisfied after a change. Confirm that the reported prerequisite was installed or configured in the environment used by the Appium CLI, then rerun the same extension-specific command. If the driver’s guide specifies additional steps, follow those rather than treating a different extension’s check as equivalent.
