To use Android apps on a Chromebook, update ChromeOS, open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences, and accept the Play Store terms. Then install apps from Google Play. If that setting is missing, the Chromebook may not support Android apps or an administrator may have blocked them. If an app is unavailable or misbehaves, identify whether the issue is device eligibility, app support, a managed-device policy, the Play Store, or the app itself before troubleshooting.
Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
Android apps work only on some Chromebook models. Update ChromeOS, then select the time and open Settings > Apps. If Manage Google Play preferences is not listed, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Check Google’s supported Chromebook list to verify the model.

On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, an administrator can disable Play Store setup or app downloads. Ask the administrator if the Play Store option is missing or downloads are blocked; a policy restriction is not an app compatibility fault. See Google’s guidance for managed Chromebooks.
Set up Google Play and install apps
- Update ChromeOS: Open Settings and install any available system update before setup.
- Open Play Store preferences: Select the time, then go to Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- Accept the terms: In the Play Store window, select More and accept the Terms of Service.
- Install an app: Open Google Play, find the app, and select Install. Apps already installed on your Android phone or tablet do not automatically appear on the Chromebook; download them again.
The Play Store and Android apps are available to the account that first signed in on the Chromebook. To use a different account, Google says to sign out of accounts and sign in with the account you want to use. Follow Google’s setup instructions if the screens differ.

Diagnose why an app is missing or will not install
The Play Store setting is absent
Confirm the Chromebook model is on Google’s supported list and check whether a work or school administrator has restricted the Store. If the model is unsupported, there is no settings change that will enable Android apps on it.
The app does not appear in search
Not every Android app is offered for every Chromebook. The developer may not support Chromebook installations, or the Store may filter the app for that device. Check the app developer’s availability information if the listing is missing.

Google Play says the device is incompatible
A message such as “Your device is not compatible with this version” means that Chromebook cannot install that app through Google Play. One possible reason is a required hardware feature the Chromebook lacks; Google gives GPS as an example. A Chromebook shown grayed out in the web Play Store cannot install the app. Ask the app developer whether it supports your model. See Google Play’s Chromebook download and compatibility guidance.

Play Store will not open, load, or keeps crashing
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Check that the Chromebook is connected to the internet.
- Install available ChromeOS updates.
- If the Store still crashes, try Google’s Chromebook crash troubleshooting steps.
An installed app crashes or behaves badly
- Restart the Chromebook and check its internet connection.
- Clear the affected app’s data and cache using the app settings on the Chromebook.
- If the issue continues and affects only that app, contact its developer.
Clearing data may remove information stored by the app, and it does not make an unsupported app compatible. Google’s Android app troubleshooting guidance for Chromebooks covers app-level issues.

When an app behaves differently from its phone version
Some Android apps expect touch controls or a phone-sized screen. Google notes that an app designed for touch may work with a mouse on a Chromebook without a touchscreen. Newly downloaded apps can also be resized using the app’s top menu; choose a phone, tablet, or custom window size where available. These adjustments can help with input or layout, but they do not resolve device incompatibility or restore an app the developer does not support.

Google’s extended updates policy says eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive a total of 10 years of automatic updates from platform release. Eligibility is device-specific. Opting into extended updates is irreversible: it removes the Play Store and Android apps and erases Android-related data on the device. If you do not opt in, those apps and the Play Store remain, but automatic updates stop; app developers may later stop supporting the device. Check Google’s extended updates information for your Chromebook before choosing.
