An open-weight AI model can help you find security bugs by reviewing focused parts of a codebase and proposing specific, evidence-backed leads. It cannot prove that a reported issue is exploitable—or that your code is safe. Use it inside an authorized review process: give it relevant code and context, ask it to show its reasoning in the source, then verify each candidate with code tracing, tests, or static analysis.
What an open-weight model can—and cannot—do in a security review
Open-weight models make model weights available to download or run, which can let a team host inference in its own environment. That may help with privacy, connectivity, or API-cost goals. It does not, by itself, guarantee that prompts and code stay private, that the model has a suitable license, or that its findings are correct. Those depend on the model, runtime, configuration, and the way you use it.

For security review, treat the model as a candidate-finding assistant. It may help inspect a narrow code path, explain a suspicious authorization check, or suggest related places to look. A response is a lead to investigate, not a confirmed vulnerability. A clean response is not evidence that the repository has no security bugs.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteResults depend on the whole review setup, not only the model: which files are selected, whether the model can find relevant entry points and data flows, how the prompt frames the task, and how reviewers validate its claims. This is especially important for access-control flaws, where the relevant check may be separated from the endpoint or data lookup.

Choose a narrow, authorized review target
Work only on code you own or are authorized to assess. Start with one repository, service, or vulnerability class rather than asking for an unrestricted audit of an entire application. A focused target gives the model a better chance of seeing the important code and makes its claims easier to check.
For example, an IDOR (insecure direct object reference) review asks whether a user can access another user’s or tenant’s object by changing an identifier. The relevant evidence may span an endpoint, identity and tenant values, an authorization check, and the database query. Define which routes and objects are in scope before asking the model to review them.
Set up the model and record what you used
Check the model, runtime, and license
Record the exact model repository and revision, any quantization, the inference runtime, the prompt, and the review date. These details matter for repeatability: a changed revision, prompt, or context-selection method can change the findings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the terms for both the model and any fine-tune before using them, especially for commercial work. For example, the SecureCode repository describes its model as inheriting its base model’s license and lists a separate CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license for its dataset. Those are distinct terms; a dataset license should not be mistaken for the model’s license. The repository owner’s intended-use description and training disclosures are useful context, not independent validation of security performance.

Decide whether local inference fits your constraints
Local deployment may be appropriate when you need to limit external data transfer or operate without a hosted API. But “local” is not a complete privacy or security guarantee: check where prompts, logs, caches, and telemetry go, and control who can access them. Hardware needs vary with model size, quantization, context length, and runtime; no single device is established as a requirement for this workflow.
Give the model useful repository context
Do not rely on a model to infer the application’s security boundaries from a vague prompt or a single isolated function. Provide the smallest useful set of files and explain how they connect. Depending on the target, that may include:
- The route, handler, or other entry point being reviewed.
- Relevant authentication and authorization checks.
- Where user, tenant, object, or role identifiers come from, and whether they are attacker-controlled.
- The data access or downstream operation that uses those values.
- Relevant dependencies, middleware, or shared helpers that affect the path.
For an access-control review, explicitly identify the endpoints and the user or tenant identifiers involved. A Semgrep-published IDOR experiment illustrates why repository navigation matters: its described harness enumerated endpoints and directed the model toward relevant code. That is a stronger setup than assuming a model will independently locate every route and trace every dependency in a large repository.
Ask for source-backed findings, not a security verdict
Ask for candidate issues with enough detail to check them. A useful finding should identify the file and line or code region, the relevant attacker-controlled input or identity, the security boundary, and the missing or flawed check. It should also state the preconditions for exploitation, distinguish source evidence from assumptions, and propose a minimal remediation.

For example, for an in-scope endpoint, ask the model to trace how the requested object identifier reaches the data lookup, identify where the authenticated user or tenant is checked, and report only a candidate if it can point to evidence of a missing or inconsistent check. Ask it to say what additional code or runtime behavior it would need to confirm the claim. This format makes a response easier to verify than a bare label such as “IDOR” or “no vulnerabilities found.”
Validate each candidate independently
Trace the path in source
Follow the reported input from the entry point to the sensitive operation. Check whether authorization is enforced before the object is returned or changed, including through middleware, shared helpers, database constraints, or other code the model may not have seen. A missing check in one file is not proof of a flaw if enforcement occurs elsewhere; conversely, a check in the handler may not be sufficient if it validates the wrong identity or object.
Use tests and static analysis where they fit
Where practical, write a focused regression test that exercises the relevant security boundary—for example, whether one tenant can retrieve or modify another tenant’s object. Run the project’s normal tests and suitable static-analysis checks. Treat a test result as evidence about the tested case, not a complete proof about every route or state.
CodeQL describes variant analysis as “the process of using a known security vulnerability as a seed to find similar problems in your code.” Its documented workflow is to create a database, run queries, and interpret results. If you already have a confirmed issue, that approach can complement model-assisted review by searching for similar code patterns across the repository. Static analysis and model review have different strengths; neither should be treated as a substitute for checking whether a reported path is actually exploitable.

What published results say about model performance
Published numbers are useful only with their task and setup attached. Semgrep’s 2026 vendor benchmark concerns IDOR detection in its described dataset and harness, not a general measure of secure-code accuracy. It reports these F1 results:
| Evaluation setup | Reported F1 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| GLM 5.2 on Semgrep’s IDOR detection benchmark | 39% | A result for that IDOR task and evaluation setup, not an overall vulnerability-detection rate. |
| Semgrep’s multimodal pipeline configurations on the same benchmark | 53–61% | Results from purpose-built pipeline configurations and harnesses, not a raw-model comparison with the first row. |
F1 combines precision and recall, so it does not tell you on its own how many false alarms your team will review or how many bugs your process will miss. When evaluating a model for your own repository, compare candidates on the same snapshot, prompt, context-selection method, and validation rules. Track labeled true findings and benign cases, then measure precision, recall, and reviewer effort for the specific bug class you care about.
A separate January 2026 arXiv preprint evaluated secure code generation rather than general-purpose audits of arbitrary production repositories. Its authors report a 96% reduction in security vulnerabilities for their evaluated DeepSeek workflow across 3,242 generated programs. The workflow combined retrieval augmentation, compiler diagnostics, CodeQL, and symbolic execution. This is evidence about that tool-assisted generation and repair setup and its test programs; it does not establish that the same reduction applies when asking a model to discover vulnerabilities in existing code.
Protect code, secrets, and connected tools
Before sending code to a model, decide what information is allowed in prompts and logs. Exclude secrets such as credentials, private keys, and production tokens; use approved test data where possible. Review the runtime’s logging and retention behavior rather than assuming that self-hosting alone settles data handling.

If a model is connected to tools, treat those tools as a separate attack surface. Sandbox execution of generated code, and require approval before the system edits files, opens network connections, or runs commands with side effects. Limit tool permissions to what the review needs.
NIST’s September 2025 CAISI summary reports that, in a simulated agent-hijacking test, the evaluated DeepSeek R1-0528 agents were on average 12 times more likely than the evaluated U.S. frontier-model agents to follow malicious instructions. That finding applies to the tested models and scenario—not to every open-weight model or ordinary text-only use. It is a reason to control connected agents’ permissions and execution environment, not a universal ranking of model safety.
Make the review repeatable
A small pilot can show whether the workflow helps your team without mistaking a benchmark for a guarantee. Keep a labeled set of known issues and benign examples for the bug class under review, and record what the model finds, what reviewers confirm, what it misses, and how much review time it takes. Preserve the repository snapshot, model revision, runtime, prompt, and context-selection method so that later comparisons are meaningful.

When a confirmed issue is fixed, use it as a seed for variant analysis or a targeted follow-up review. Keep the model’s original claim separate from the confirmed finding and the test or analysis that supports the fix. This creates an auditable trail and reduces the chance that a plausible-sounding but unsupported response becomes part of the security record.
