You can repurpose an old Kindle as a household dashboard, but the right setup depends on its exact model and firmware. Start by testing a simple, high-contrast page in the built-in browser. If you only need read-only information, a generated image displayed through a screensaver workflow may be a better fit. More interactive browser kiosks and direct-rendering projects exist, but their documented support is device-specific and may require a jailbreak.
Choose a dashboard approach
Decide whether the Kindle needs to show information only or let you control devices. E-ink works well for a mostly static view, but refresh behavior, network access, sleep settings, and browser support vary by Kindle and software. These community examples show possible approaches, not universal Kindle compatibility.

| Approach | Best fit | Interaction | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple page in the stock browser | A first experiment or basic status board | Potentially interactive | Older browser and model-specific web support; Amazon’s older Kindle guide describes its browser as experimental. |
| Generated image and screensaver workflow | Read-only weather, calendar, or household status | Passive between image updates | The documented Home Assistant workflow uses a rendering host and a jailbroken Kindle screensaver setup; see the project documentation. |
| Browser kiosk | A touch dashboard on a specifically supported device | Interactive in the documented project | Old WebKit, model and firmware matching, and potentially jailbreak-dependent setup; see kindle-dash. |
| Direct framebuffer rendering | A customized panel for a specifically supported Kindle | Project-dependent | Model-specific scripts and lifecycle behavior; see the Oasis 3 project. |
Identify the Kindle before following a guide
Find the model or generation and current firmware in the Kindle’s settings or device information. Also note whether it has a touchscreen, which way you want to orient it, and what charging connector it uses. This matters because the cited projects target particular Kindle generations and software versions; success on one device does not establish support for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome projects or screensaver workflows require a jailbreak, while the sources do not establish that every browser-based approach does. A September 2026 Home Assistant community guide recommends checking the model and serial number against current jailbreak guidance. Treat such steps as community advice, not official Amazon support, and do not apply instructions intended for a different model or firmware.

Try a simple page in the built-in browser
A plain page is the lowest-complexity test if your Kindle has a usable browser. Older Kindle documentation calls the browser experimental, and a dashboard project built for 2012-era WebKit deliberately avoids modern web features. That is a warning against assuming a current, complex Home Assistant interface will work unchanged: it may render poorly, load slowly, or fail.
- Open the Kindle’s built-in browser using the menu path documented for your specific model.
- Load a local or otherwise accessible page with one status view, such as a clock, weather, or a short list of household states.
- Use black text on a white background, large type, few columns, and minimal scripting. These are practical design choices for an older e-reader browser, not manufacturer requirements.
- If using Home Assistant, test the exact dashboard URL and verify that it refreshes and reconnects as needed before mounting the Kindle.
The kindle-dash project reports development and testing on a Paperwhite 1 running firmware 5.3.x. Its documented experience is specific to that configuration; it should not be treated as proof that another Kindle can run the same setup. The project describes handling a Home Assistant token on a proxy side, but that is a design choice for that project, not a general security guarantee.

Use a generated image for a read-only panel
If you do not need touch controls, a generated image can avoid asking an older browser to render a modern dashboard. The Home Assistant Lovelace Kindle Screensaver project describes turning a Lovelace view into a grayscale PNG and making it available to a jailbroken Kindle screensaver workflow. This route requires configuration and a rendering host or container; follow the project’s current instructions for its supported setup.

Consider interactive or direct-rendering projects only when needed
For touch controls or a highly customized screen, community projects show two more involved options. The browser-based kindle-dash targets an older WebKit environment and documents a specific Paperwhite 1 configuration. The Kindle Dashboard framebuffer project targets an Oasis 3 and notes that screen coordinates and lifecycle behavior may not transfer to other models. Check each project’s current instructions and device support before changing the Kindle.
Do not confuse Android kiosk guidance with Kindle compatibility. Home Assistant’s Fully Kiosk Browser integration documents Android kiosk features; it is not documentation for running that Android app on a Kindle.

- 【Firm Support for Hands-Free Viewing】Gooseneck tablet holder built with a firm reinforced aluminum arm, significantly minimizing wobbling and sagging. This tablet holder helps keep your screen at a comfortable viewing angle for reading, streaming and video calls. The arm is intentionally stiff for support—use both hands when bending it
- 【Ultra-Stable Clamp for Firm Surfaces】 Attach the tablet stand to a solid bed headboard, desk or table edge from 0.2–3" (0.5–8 cm) thick. EVA non-slip pads improve grip and help protect furniture, while TPE pads cushion your device inside the holder
- 【Fits 4.7–13" Tablets & Device】 The bed tablet holder compatible with a wide range of iPad Pro/Air/Mini, Galaxy Tab, Kindle, Fire HD, Switch and device. For a secure grip, device thickness should not exceed 0.78" (2 cm); bulky protective cases may need to be removed before mounting
- 【30-Inch Reach & 360° Viewing】 The flexible arm measures about 30 inches when fully extended, giving you room to position the screen where it is comfortable to see. Rotate the holder 360° for portrait or landscape viewing—ideal for reading in bed, watching videos, video calls, recipes and other hands-free viewing
- 【Use It the Right Way】 Gooseneck tablet stand holder may move slightly when you tap or swipe the screen. For better stability with a larger or heavier tablet, bend the arm into an “S” or loop shape instead of keeping it fully extended. Best suited for hands-free reading, movies and video calls rather than frequent typing, drawing or repeated screen interaction
Set it up and test it before mounting
- Match the route to the job. Choose a browser page for a simple first test, an image workflow for read-only information, or a model-specific interactive project if controls are essential.
- Check the exact software and device requirements. For a jailbreak-dependent route, verify current compatibility for the Kindle’s precise model and firmware before proceeding.
- Test network and refresh behavior. Confirm Wi-Fi reach, page or image updates, and recovery after a disconnect. Keep credentials off the Kindle where the architecture allows, and do not expose Home Assistant directly to the public internet or enter sensitive credentials into an untrusted page.
- Check display and sleep behavior. Confirm orientation, contrast, touch response if applicable, and whether the Kindle sleeps or wakes in a way that suits the display.
- Verify charging and placement. Consult the guide for the exact Kindle model for USB and charging requirements, then measure the device before choosing a mount. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite User’s Guide is model-specific; it does not validate a universal mount or a particular cable.
