You can turn an old Kindle into a simple recipe reader by sending or copying recipe files to it, then keeping the recipes you use together in one small library. First identify the Kindle model, because menus, supported features and Wi-Fi compatibility vary; then test one recipe before preparing a full collection.
1. Identify your Kindle model
Before following model-specific directions, check which Kindle you have. On devices that show the relevant menu, open Settings > Device Options > Device Info. If that path is unavailable, use Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides to find identification guidance and manuals for older generations.

Keep the model name or generation handy: the exact controls and capabilities differ across Kindles, so an instruction that works on one may not match another.
2. Pick recipe files that suit the screen
Amazon lists EPUB, PDF, HTML, RTF, TXT and common image formats among the files accepted by Send to Kindle. For a recipe that is mostly text, try a clean EPUB or HTML file first; these are often a better fit for text that needs to reflow on a small screen. A PDF can preserve a page’s original layout, but its fixed page may be harder to read without zooming or panning.

Amazon’s general format list does not mean every older Kindle handles every format in the same way. Check the format guidance and test the actual file on your model before converting or sending a large batch. 3. Choose how to put recipes on the Kindle
Wireless delivery is convenient when the Kindle and account can use Send to Kindle. USB is a practical fallback when wireless delivery is unavailable, unreliable or unnecessary. The key difference is where you want the file and how you prefer to transfer it:

For device-specific computer steps, follow Amazon’s connect, browse and transfer files guide. Wireless and USB are not interchangeable in every respect: decide whether you want a library copy or only a local file, and verify that your chosen format works on the Kindle.
4. Build and test a small recipe library
- Prepare one recipe file. Use a clear filename that will make sense in the Kindle library, such as Lentil Soup or Banana Bread.
- Transfer it. Use Send to Kindle or copy it over USB, following the steps for your Kindle and computer.
- Open it on the Kindle. Check that ingredient quantities, step headings and special characters display correctly. If the recipe includes a useful image, confirm it remains legible.
- Adjust the file if needed. If the layout is awkward, try a different supported format or a cleaner source file, then transfer it again.
- Add more recipes gradually. Once the first one reads well, organize additional files with useful names. If your model supports collections, group the recipes together.
Testing one file first helps catch formatting problems before you spend time preparing a larger archive. Screen size and document behavior vary by model, so there is no single format or layout that is guaranteed to be best for every older Kindle.

5. Fix Wi-Fi problems on an older Kindle
If Send to Kindle is your preferred route but the device will not connect, Amazon recommends checking Airplane mode, the network name and password, restarting both the Kindle and router, checking for device updates, and trying a phone hotspot. Its Kindle Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide also notes a compatibility limit: Kindles released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or WPA3. A router configured to offer only those options may prevent an older Kindle from joining; USB transfer avoids the Wi-Fi requirement.
