The setup is managed from the app, not from the TV. Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer use a different screensaver setup.
Check which Chromecast you have
These steps are for older cast-only Chromecast models and Chromecast Ultra. If your device is a Chromecast with Google TV or a Google TV Streamer, follow Google’s separate Ambient screensaver instructions for those models; their menus are different.

Google says support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended: it no longer receives software or security updates, and Google no longer provides technical support. That warning applies to the first-generation model, not automatically to every older Chromecast. If you are unsure of the generation, check the device before troubleshooting.
Set up the photo slideshow in Google Home
- Set up the Chromecast in the Google Home app on a supported mobile device, or confirm that it is already connected to your home. Google’s iOS setup guidance lists an HDMI display, a Google Account, secure Wi-Fi, and Google Home on a mobile device as requirements; it says computer setup is not supported.
- Make sure the Chromecast is associated with the Google Account that holds the photos you want to display.
- In Google Home, open Home or All devices, then touch and hold the Chromecast tile.
- Open Settings and select Ambient mode.
- Select Google Photos, then choose the album or albums for the slideshow. Google’s Ambient screensaver guidance describes this route for eligible older Chromecast devices.
- If the Ambient preferences do not appear on the TV, Google recommends restarting the Chromecast.
Choose photos and protect personal details
A dedicated Google Photos album makes it easier to control which pictures appear. Archived photos will not show in the Chromecast Ambient screensaver, even if they are included in a selected album. In Photo Frame settings, you can also hide details such as album name, date, and location. Consider doing that if the screen is visible to guests.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Google Photos says album slideshows are available on eligible Chromecast devices, but the feature is not supported on every device or in every region. Some content can also be filtered, including certain third-party app images and screenshots. As a result, selecting an album does not guarantee that every item in it will appear.
What to expect on screen
Google states that Chromecast Ultra’s Ambient screensaver has a maximum resolution of 1080p. The cited guidance does not specify a universal slideshow interval or crop behavior, so do not assume a particular timing or how every photo will be framed. Check the chosen album on the actual TV and adjust it if the result is not what you want.

If setup or reconnection fails
Check Wi-Fi requirements for the model
Google’s cited iOS setup guidance specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for first-generation Chromecast, 2.4 or 5 GHz for Chromecast (3rd gen), and 5 GHz for Chromecast Ultra. These are requirements in that setup guidance; if the app reports a different issue or your exact model differs, use Google Home’s prompts and the relevant model-specific support instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry the original HDMI extender for a first-generation device
For reconnecting a first-generation Chromecast, Google recommends trying the HDMI extender included in the box. It is a troubleshooting option for that situation, not a general requirement or a reason to buy an extender separately.

- Press the Google Assistant button on the remote and use voice search to find specific shows, youtube tv streaming, or search by mood, genre, actress, and more; control the volume, switch inputs, play music, and get answers, hands-free
- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
When reusing it is not practical
If a first-generation Chromecast cannot be set up or no longer works reliably, Google’s ended-support status is a relevant limitation. A replacement is not required just to make a photo slideshow, but another device or a dedicated photo frame may be a fallback if the Chromecast cannot connect. Google says select photo frames support Google Photos album slideshows; compatibility varies, so verify the specific product and region before relying on that feature.
