You can use an iPhone or iPad as a streaming camera in three main ways: connect an iPhone to a Mac with Apple Continuity Camera, bring either device into OBS using a third-party USB or NDI workflow, or host the stream directly from a supported mobile browser or app. Choose based on where you want to produce the stream: on a computer, or on the phone or tablet itself.
Choose the setup that fits your stream
| Route | Where the stream is produced | Connection | Best suited to | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Continuity Camera | Mac app or browser studio | Wi-Fi or USB | Using an iPhone as a camera input on a Mac | Requires compatible Apple devices and account settings; Apple’s Mac webcam instructions specify iPhone, not iPad. |
| Camera for OBS Studio over USB | Mac or Windows computer running OBS | USB | A direct wired camera feed into an OBS scene | Requires a third-party iOS app and OBS plugin; Windows also needs Apple device support installed. |
| NDI to OBS | Computer running OBS | Local network | Placing the camera away from the production computer | Network conditions affect the feed, and OBS needs a third-party NDI receiver. |
| Mobile studio | iPhone or iPad browser or app | Device’s internet connection | Hosting directly from a mobile device | Mobile workflows can omit features available on desktop; check the platform’s current live-stream requirements. |
These are workflow comparisons, not measured image-quality or latency results. If you want the simplest Mac camera input, start with Continuity Camera. If you need an OBS scene, choose USB for a direct connection or NDI when the phone needs to move around a suitable local network. If you do not need a computer production setup, check whether your streaming platform supports hosting from mobile Safari or its app.

Use an iPhone as a camera for a Mac with Continuity Camera
Check compatibility first
Apple’s Continuity Camera guide lists iPhone XR or later with iOS 16 or later, and a Mac compatible with macOS Ventura 13 or later, for using an iPhone as a Mac webcam. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and be near each other. For wireless use, the Mac must not be using AirPlay or Sidecar, and the devices must not be sharing their internet connections. For USB, connect the iPhone and approve the trust prompt.
Set it up
- Enable Continuity Camera: On the iPhone, open Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity. On some software versions, the setting appears under AirPlay & Handoff. Make sure Continuity Camera is enabled.
- Position the iPhone: Place it in a stable, iPhone-compatible mount or stand in landscape orientation. Aim the rear camera at the shot and make sure it is not obstructed.
- Choose the iPhone in the Mac app: Open the streaming, meeting, or other camera-enabled app on the Mac and select the iPhone in the app’s camera menu. The exact menu location depends on the app.
- Use USB if needed: Connect a compatible cable, then approve any trust or accessory prompts. A wired connection is also useful when you want to keep the iPhone charging during a long session.
- Check the shot: Preview the image in the streaming app, then adjust framing, focus, and lighting before going live.
If the iPhone does not appear
- Confirm that the iPhone and Mac meet Apple’s device and software requirements and use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication.
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, the devices are near each other, and Continuity Camera is enabled.
- For wireless use, make sure the Mac is not using AirPlay or Sidecar and that neither device is sharing its internet connection.
- Update both devices and the video app, then try USB and respond to the trust prompt.
- After restarting the iPhone, unlock it once before relocking it and trying again, as Apple advises in its troubleshooting guidance.
Use an iPhone or iPad camera in OBS
OBS does not make the iPhone or iPad camera feed available through the workflows below on its own. Camera for OBS Studio documents third-party USB and NDI routes; follow the project’s current installation instructions because software requirements can change.

USB: a direct wired feed
- Follow the Camera for OBS Studio USB setup guide to install its OBS plugin and iOS app. The project recommends installing the plugin before buying the app.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- On Windows, install Apple device support if required, unlock the phone or tablet, trust the computer, and check that the computer recognizes the device.
- In OBS, add the camera feed as a source using the plugin’s instructions, then check framing and audio in the scene before streaming.
Choose USB when the device can stay near the computer and you prefer a direct connection over a network-dependent feed.
NDI: send the camera feed over your local network
- Use Camera for OBS Studio’s NDI guide to configure the iPhone or iPad feed.
- Install an NDI receiving source in OBS, such as the DistroAV plugin, following its current installation instructions.
- Connect the phone or tablet and the OBS computer to the local network, then add the incoming NDI feed as a source in OBS.
- Test the feed under the network conditions you expect during the stream. Where possible, the project recommends Ethernet for the receiving device and Wi-Fi 6 or 7 for higher bitrates or resolutions.
NDI can suit a camera that needs to move around the local network, but congestion and network capability affect the feed. It is a third-party workflow, not a built-in OBS camera feature. Camera for OBS Studio recommends USB for lower latency and reliability; that is the project’s guidance, not a measured performance result here.

Host the stream directly from an iPhone or iPad
If you want to produce the stream on the mobile device rather than use it as a computer camera, check whether your streaming platform supports a mobile studio. StreamYard’s mobile-device instructions describe hosting from native Safari on iPhone or iPad and note that native screen sharing and green screen or virtual background are unavailable in that mobile workflow. The page’s stated operating-system support details are historical; check StreamYard’s current requirements before relying on a particular device or feature.

Do you need an HDMI capture device?
Usually not for these iPhone and iPad camera workflows. Continuity Camera uses Wi-Fi or USB, and Camera for OBS Studio documents USB and NDI approaches. An HDMI capture device is relevant when the camera or other video source has an HDMI output; it is not a default requirement for using an iPhone with Continuity Camera. See StreamYard’s dedicated-camera guide for an example of an HDMI-source setup.
Practical checks before going live
- Stability and framing: Use a secure stand or mount, keep the rear camera unobstructed, and preview the shot from the actual production app.
- Power: For a long session, USB can keep an iPhone connected and charging. Check cable compatibility with your device.
- Connection choice: A wired USB route avoids relying on Wi-Fi for the camera feed. NDI is more flexible about camera placement, but depends on the local network.
- Platform and content rules: Before streaming, check the host platform’s current live-stream eligibility, copyright rules, and content policies. The setup guides cited here do not establish that a particular recording is cleared for streaming.
- Audio and scene check: Confirm the intended microphone and camera sources in the streaming app or OBS, and preview the full scene before starting the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos as a 24/7 live stream, that is a different use from using an iPhone as a live camera. StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded recordings and playlists: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home internet connection has to stay on. It does not stream a live camera feed.
