On a Mac, use Apple Continuity Camera. On Windows, install a camera-bridge app such as Camo. For streaming, feed the iPhone into OBS and, when another app needs the finished scene, enable OBS Virtual Camera. A stable mount and USB connection make long sessions more dependable than a loose phone and wireless link.
Choose the right method
| Computer or goal | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mac video calls | Continuity Camera | Built in; no extra app |
| Windows PC | Camo or another supported bridge | Windows needs intermediary software |
| Advanced controls on Mac | Camo | More framing, image, lens, and background controls |
| OBS streaming | Camo (or another source) into OBS | Scenes, overlays, filters, and routing |
| Short meeting | Wireless | Fast setup, but uses more battery and depends on network conditions |
| Long meeting or stream | USB | Usually steadier and can charge the phone |
Compatibility, resolution, virtual-camera behavior, and pricing vary between apps. The iPhone may produce an excellent image, but lighting, mounting, compression, and the computer still affect the result.
What you need
- A compatible iPhone, computer, and video app
- A mount or stand at roughly eye level
- A USB cable for the most reliable long-session setup, or dependable Wi-Fi
- A charger or powered USB connection
- Optional headphones or a separate microphone
- Focus or Do Not Disturb to reduce interruptions
Use Continuity Camera on a Mac
Check the requirements
Apple Continuity Camera requires an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later and a Mac compatible with macOS Ventura 13 or later. Both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on, the devices must be nearby, and Continuity Camera must be enabled on the iPhone. Wireless use also requires that the Mac is not using AirPlay or Sidecar. See Apple’s current requirements at Apple Support and the compatibility table at Apple’s additional requirements.
Wireless setup
- Mount the iPhone securely, lock it, and aim the rear cameras at you. Landscape is generally easiest for calls.
- Open FaceTime or another camera-enabled app on the Mac.
- Open the app’s Camera, Video, or Input menu and select the iPhone or Continuity Camera device.
- Preview the image before joining the call.
Menu names differ between Zoom, Teams, Meet, FaceTime, browsers, and app versions; select the iPhone wherever that app chooses its camera.

USB setup
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable.
- If prompted, unlock it and tap Trust.
- Lock and mount the phone.
- Select it in the video app’s camera menu and leave the cable connected.
USB is the safer default for teaching, long meetings, and streams because it avoids wireless instability and helps keep the phone charged.
Select the microphone separately
Continuity Camera can expose the iPhone microphone, but you do not have to use it. Choose the Mac microphone, headset, or USB microphone if it sounds better. The iPhone microphone is selectable in the app or under System Settings → Sound → Input. If the Mac has no built-in or external microphone, an app may select the iPhone automatically. Use headphones or echo cancellation to prevent feedback.
Camera position and Apple effects
The rear camera is normally preferable to the front camera. Check framing before locking the phone because the screen may face away from you. A stable 1080p image is more useful than a shaky high-resolution feed, and not every app exposes every iPhone lens.

- Open OBS Studio and add a scene.
- Add a Video Capture Source and select the Camo or smartphone-camera device.
- Resize and position the feed; add screen capture, text, images, filters, or additional cameras as needed.
- Click Start Virtual Camera when another app must receive the finished OBS scene.
- In that app, select OBS Virtual Camera.
OBS documents smartphone sources at its smartphone-camera guide, webcam sources at Video Capture Source guidance, and routing at the Virtual Camera guide. OBS Studio 30.0 and later on macOS 13 Ventura and later include a compatible virtual-camera component. Older components can have limitations; see OBS troubleshooting.
Improve picture, sound, and reliability
- Place the lens at eye level and face a window or light; avoid strong backlighting.
- Use USB for lengthy sessions and keep the phone ventilated and out of direct sun.
- Lower resolution or frame rate if the phone becomes hot; stop if it displays a temperature warning.
- Use a headset or better external microphone when speech quality matters.
- Turn on Focus or Do Not Disturb. An incoming call pauses Continuity Camera video and audio until the call ends and the iPhone is locked and mounted again.
- Apple warns that, rarely, Continuity Camera may disconnect Wi-Fi and use cellular data for background tasks. Connect by USB or turn off cellular data if that causes problems.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| iPhone is not listed on Mac | Verify requirements, same Apple Account, two-factor authentication, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, locked phone, nearby devices, and enabled Continuity Camera. |
| Camera disappears | Lock and remount the phone, reconnect USB, quit competing camera apps, end any call, or switch from Wi-Fi to USB. |
| No microphone | Select the iPhone microphone separately, or choose the Mac, headset, or USB microphone. |
| Video is unstable | Use USB, reduce wireless congestion, and keep the phone near the computer. |
| Camo works in Studio but not the meeting app | Close the meeting app, verify Camo’s preview, reopen the app, reselect the Camo camera, and check operating-system permissions. OBS Virtual Camera is an additional fallback. |
| OBS Virtual Camera is missing | Install the component on Windows if required. On macOS, approve the OBS system or camera extension in Privacy & Security or General → Login Items & Extensions. |
| Phone gets hot | Lower quality or frame rate, use USB, remove a thick case if safe, improve ventilation, and avoid sunlight. |
For Mac detection failures, Apple also recommends updating iOS, macOS, and the video app, restarting both devices, unlocking and relocking the iPhone after a restart, then plugging it into the Mac and trying again. Settings labels can vary by iOS version, including Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff.

Is an iPhone better than a dedicated webcam?
An iPhone can offer a sharper image, rear-camera quality, multiple lenses, and flexible positioning if you already own one. A dedicated webcam is usually simpler for daily use: it stays installed, does not consume phone battery, is not interrupted by calls, and does not tie up a device needed for two-factor authentication. Choose a webcam when you need an always-ready shared-workstation camera, have unreliable Wi-Fi and no suitable cable, or run long meetings every day.
