9Router is not documented as an agent you can add directly to Xcode. Apple documents a way for an external coding agent to access an open Xcode project through Xcode’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, while 9Router documents a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint for supported coding tools. Those are separate capabilities; the documentation reviewed does not confirm that they work together end to end or that 9Router can power Xcode’s built-in agents.
Can you use 9Router with Xcode?
Potentially, as part of an external-agent setup: Xcode can expose project capabilities to an outside agent through MCP, and 9Router can route requests from supported tools to AI providers through a local endpoint. But neither Apple’s reviewed documentation nor 9Router’s reviewed integration guide confirms the complete combination, or gives version-specific steps for connecting 9Router to an Xcode agent.

- Xcode’s built-in coding assistant: Apple describes configuring agents and chat models in Xcode’s Intelligence settings and reviewing or applying proposed changes.
- An external coding agent: A separate tool, such as Codex or Claude Code, can be configured to access Xcode capabilities through MCP.
- 9Router: A router that documents a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint and setup instructions for selected tools. Its reviewed integration list does not name Xcode.
Apple’s documentation describes its MCP feature as a way to “Let agents access your project and Xcode capabilities using the Model Context Protocol.” Apple’s external-agent documentation explains that route; it does not identify 9Router as an Xcode agent or specify it as the backend for Xcode’s built-in agents.
How the documented external-agent route works
In this workflow, Xcode provides project access to an external agent. The agent remains a separate application or CLI, and its model-request configuration is handled separately from Xcode’s MCP connection.

- Allow external agents in Xcode. In Xcode, open Settings > Intelligence and enable access for external agents. Check Apple’s current instructions for the exact labels in your Xcode release.
- Configure the external agent to use Xcode’s MCP server. Apple’s examples use
xcrun mcpbridgewhen configuring Codex or Claude Code. Follow the example for your agent rather than assuming every tool uses the same configuration format. - Open the project in Xcode. Apple’s documented sequence calls for opening the project in Xcode before prompting the external agent to work with it.
- Keep model routing separate. MCP provides access to Xcode capabilities; it does not, by itself, configure the external agent to send model requests through 9Router.

What 9Router documents
9Router’s published setup describes a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:20128/v1 and integrations for selected coding tools, including Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and Cline. Its general setup is:

- Install the package globally with
npm install -g 9router. - Start it by running
9router. - Connect AI providers through the dashboard using the available provider setup options.
- Configure a supported coding tool to use
http://localhost:20128/v1as its API base URL, following that tool’s 9Router integration instructions.
The endpoint and setup are described in 9Router’s documentation. The documentation describes provider connections, routing and fallback, and format translation as product features; these are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings. Provider charges, where applicable, are paid to the provider. The reviewed instructions do not establish that a paid provider plan is required for every setup.
Why this does not confirm a direct Xcode connection
Two pieces of configuration would need to fit: the external agent must connect to Xcode through MCP, and that agent must accept a custom model endpoint that can be set to 9Router. The cited documentation establishes Apple’s MCP route and 9Router’s endpoint for supported tools, but does not document the combined configuration for a specific Xcode release and agent version.

In particular, the reviewed 9Router integration list does not name Xcode, and Apple’s reviewed material does not explain how to set 9Router as the backend for Xcode’s built-in Claude Agent or Codex agent. Treat that direct connection as unverified, not as a confirmed feature or a guaranteed workaround.

- Inspect the proposed edits before accepting them.
- Check the affected files and the project’s build or test results after changes.
- Apply only the changes you intend to keep.
Apple’s overview of the built-in coding assistant and change-review workflow is in its Xcode documentation. This describes Xcode’s documented workflow; it is not a claim that a 9Router-connected setup has been tested.
What to verify before trying the combination
- Confirm your Xcode version offers the external-agent MCP setting and follow Apple’s instructions for that version.
- Confirm your chosen external agent supports both Apple’s
xcrun mcpbridgeconfiguration and a configurable OpenAI-compatible API base URL. - Check the agent’s current 9Router instructions for the exact endpoint and any required model, key, or format settings.
- Test with a small, reviewable change before relying on the setup for broader project edits.
The reviewed documentation does not specify a minimum Xcode version, geographic availability, or a verified end-to-end 9Router configuration. Compatibility should therefore be checked against the current instructions for the exact versions you plan to use.
