Some Android devices are designed to run without an internal battery, but that does not mean an ordinary Android phone will work with its battery removed. Whether a particular phone can boot and operate this way depends on its hardware and manufacturer configuration. Because no phone model is specified, there is no safe, universal set of removal or power-bypass steps.
Can an Android phone run without its battery?
Possibly, but only if the device was designed and configured to support batteryless operation. Android’s framework documentation covers products with no internal battery, such as devices powered by an AC outlet or another device’s USB port. It does not promise that every Android phone can operate with its battery taken out. AOSP’s batteryless-device documentation is about how manufacturers implement those products, not a consumer procedure for modifying a phone.

For Android 9 and later, AOSP documents default battery readings when the system does not detect a battery: present=false, status unknown, and remaining capacity 0. A manufacturer can change those defaults through its kernel power-supply driver or Health HAL. Those settings help explain why behavior varies; they are not settings a phone owner can assume or safely apply to an unspecified handset.

Plugging in a charger, USB cable, or power bank is ordinary charging advice—not proof that a phone will start or remain stable with its internal battery absent. AOSP describes batteryless products as implementations that report external power appropriately to Android, for example through an AC or USB charger driver or a Health HAL configuration. That is manufacturer-level support, not a universal accessory or user setting.

Google’s Pixel charging guidance explains wired and wireless charging and directs people who want a Pixel battery removed to authorized repair. It does not provide an operating method for using a Pixel with its battery removed. Likewise, Google’s charging troubleshooting steps cover phones that will not turn on or charge; they do not establish battery-absent operation.
What to check for your exact phone
Before considering battery-free use, identify the exact model and check its manufacturer documentation. Look specifically for support for operation with the battery absent—not merely charging while connected to power. If the documentation is silent, compatibility is not established.

For the Pixel 4a specifically, Google’s safety manual says, “Don’t attempt to remove the battery. Contact Google or a Google authorized service provider to have the battery replaced.” It warns that replacement by non-qualified professionals, or use of a non-qualified battery, can damage the phone and may create fire, explosion, leakage, or other hazards. This manual applies to the Pixel 4a; do not assume its model-specific instructions describe every Android phone. See the Pixel 4a safety and regulatory information.
If the phone will not turn on or charge
Follow troubleshooting for the exact model rather than removing the battery as a test. Google’s Pixel charging troubleshooting recommends checking the cable, power adapter, outlet, and charging port, then contacting support or repair if those checks do not resolve the issue. Those checks address charging problems; they do not make battery-free operation safe or supported.
