Menus and available features vary by model and Fire OS version, so identify your tablet and follow its matching Amazon Quick Start Guide before relying on model-specific directions.
Find your Fire tablet’s model and guide
Fire tablets do not all use identical screens, menus, or features. Amazon’s Quick Start Guides cover specific devices, including the Fire HD 8 (2024 release) and Fire HD 10 (13th Generation). Find the guide for your exact model and generation, then use it when a button or menu differs from the directions here. Amazon’s Fire tablet Quick Start Guides page lists available guides.

- Check that Airplane mode is off.
- Confirm that you selected the right network and entered its password correctly.
- Check whether another device can connect to the same network, and move the tablet closer to the router.
- On public Wi-Fi, open Silk; the network may require a separate sign-in page.
- If those checks do not help, restart the tablet and network equipment. Amazon also recommends trying a network reset, checking for a software update, and testing another connection. See its Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps before considering a factory reset.
Browse the web with Silk
Silk is Amazon’s browser for Fire tablets. Open Silk while connected to the internet, then enter a web address or search term in the search field. You can save bookmarks and revisit pages from browsing history. For Amazon’s current instructions, see Silk Browser help.

Use Settings and Quick Settings
Settings is where you manage device options; Quick Settings provides shortcuts to commonly used controls. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Some tasks may require opening the full Settings app, and the exact path depends on your device and software.
Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help hub organizes guidance for setup and connections, power and storage, apps and content, and accessibility. Use it for tasks such as installing apps, downloading books, charging, checking storage, updating software, and changing brightness or volume; consult your model’s guide if the menu path differs.

On Fire OS 5 and higher, Amazon’s documented route is Quick Actions (swipe down twice), Settings, then Accessibility. What is available depends on the device and Fire OS version. See Amazon’s accessibility help for device-specific details.
If VoiceView turns on unintentionally, the tablet may respond differently than expected. Amazon’s accessibility page explains how to turn it off; follow the instructions for your software version rather than guessing at controls.

Switch-based input
For people who use switch-based input, Amazon says Switch Access works on Fire OS 6 and higher with compatible Bluetooth switches and controllers. Its help page names options such as the Ablenet Blue 2, Enabling Devices Wireless Switch Interface and Wireless One Switch, Tecla-e, and a Bluetooth keyboard. This is a specialized setup, not a general requirement; check compatibility with the tablet and the accessory maker’s instructions. See Amazon’s Switch Access guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right profile and controls
Amazon describes Parental Controls on an adult profile as designed for users aged 13 and older. They can restrict activities such as web browsing, purchases, content types, wireless connectivity, and camera access. Amazon directs caregivers setting up a tablet for a child under 13 to create a Child Profile instead, with options such as age filters, content management, web activity, camera and photo access, and volume limits. Review Amazon’s guidance for Parental Controls and Child Profiles before choosing settings.
Parental Controls on an adult profile do not remove mature or adult-rated content from store results. Amazon states: “Turning on Parental Controls doesn’t remove Mature or Adult-rated content from the device.” Choose a Child Profile when the intended user is under 13, rather than treating adult-profile restrictions as a substitute.
