You can use an AI coding assistant more safely by keeping real credentials out of its context, limiting what files and tools it can access, and supplying narrowly scoped secrets only at runtime when a task truly needs them. Do not rely on .gitignore alone: it controls Git tracking, not what an assistant can read.
What an AI coding assistant may see
A coding assistant may receive more than the text you type into chat. Depending on the product and mode, its context can include open files, project structure, repository content, terminal output, tool arguments, and issue or pull-request details. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance states: “AI coding assistants send code context (open files, project structure, terminal output) to the model provider’s API.” Check the current product documentation for its context collection, retention, and exclusion controls; behavior differs by tool and can change.
A command-capable agent has another risk: it can act with the privileges available in its environment. If it can read a file, inspect a process environment, run a command, access a network, or invoke an enabled MCP tool, those capabilities may expose data or cause changes beyond the text response.
Before you start: keep secrets out of context
Choose an approved assistant and data boundary
Understand whether the assistant runs locally or sends context to a hosted service, what data it collects and retains, and which exclusion controls are available. For sensitive or regulated work, use an organization-approved enterprise or self-hosted option, or do not send that material to a cloud assistant. OWASP recommends defining approved tools and data categories in policy.

Exclude credential files explicitly
Use the assistant’s own ignore or context-exclusion feature to exclude files and directories such as:
.envand.env.**.pemand*.keycredentials.jsonandserviceAccountKey.json- Any directory used for private credentials or deployment secrets
.gitignore is not an AI exclusion control. It tells Git what to ignore for version control; it does not prevent an assistant with filesystem access from reading a file. Do not open a secret file in the active IDE while the assistant is running, either: open-file context can be sent even when the file is not tracked.

Constrain command-capable agents
Enable approval prompts for commands and network access, restrict filesystem access outside the workspace, and use a sandbox or disposable VM/container when possible. Remove production credentials from that environment. Limit or disable MCP tools that are not needed, review and pin approved servers, and protect repository instruction and configuration files: malicious tool descriptions or altered project instructions can steer later agent actions.
While coding: use placeholders, not live keys
Give the assistant a placeholder such as API_KEY and redact credential values from error messages, screenshots, logs, and examples. Do not paste a real token into chat or put one in a terminal command while the assistant can inspect terminal context.

Environment variables are not automatically hidden. An agent that can inspect its process environment or run commands in the same environment may be able to read them. Keep credentials outside assistant-readable project files and prompts. When authentication is genuinely required, have a trusted runtime or secrets broker supply a narrowly scoped, short-lived credential at execution time. A vault is an operational control, not a guarantee that an agent authorized to retrieve a secret cannot read it.
Special case: GitHub Copilot cloud agent
GitHub documents an ephemeral, firewalled environment for its cloud agent and says data and tokens the agent should not access can be kept in Actions variables or secrets. For workflow configuration, use fresh GitHub-hosted runners or ephemeral self-hosted runners and grant minimum permissions. These claims apply to that documented cloud-agent setup, not every Copilot mode, IDE extension, or terminal agent; verify current documentation and plan policies before relying on a particular setting. GitHub also describes combining user instructions with contextual information before sending input to a language model, so generated output still requires review.

Review generated changes and automation
Treat AI-generated code like any other code that can affect a system. Run secret scanning and appropriate dependency and security checks, then have a human review the changes. Pay particular attention to build scripts, CI workflows, and deployment configuration, since changes there can alter what credentials are available or where they are sent. GitHub documents secret scanning in connection with Copilot agent mode and compatible MCP tools; availability depends on the applicable product and configuration.

If you exposed a credential
- Revoke or rotate it immediately in the service that issued it. History cleanup cannot make an exposed key safe again.
- Review usage and access logs for unexpected activity and investigate any suspicious use.
- Clean repository history if it was committed, and notify collaborators who may have pulled or copied it. Treat this as cleanup after revocation, not a replacement for revocation.
- Follow your incident-response process and any applicable privacy or breach-notification requirements.
