To capture a website in dark mode with an AI agent, tell it the URL, the viewport, how to reach the desired page or theme, and whether you need a viewport, element, or full-page image. In a Playwright workflow, set the browser context’s colorScheme to dark before navigation, then inspect the saved screenshot: this asks the site to use dark mode, but does not force every site to do so.
What to tell the agent
A useful instruction makes the expected result verifiable. Include:

- The exact URL and, if needed, the steps to reach the page or state.
- The viewport dimensions or device to emulate.
- That the browser should emulate a dark color scheme.
- The capture target: visible viewport, a named element, or the entire scrollable page.
- The output filename and format.
- A request to inspect the saved image and report whether the site actually rendered dark.
For example: “Open https://example.com at 1440 × 900. Emulate a dark color scheme, then open the settings page and enable its theme toggle if needed. Capture the full page as settings-dark.png. Inspect the saved image and report whether it is actually dark; if not, explain what prevented it.”
Agents that expose page structure can use an accessibility or UI snapshot to locate controls, while a screenshot shows the rendered pixels. Playwright documents snapshots for understanding and interacting with page structure and screenshots for visual layout, canvas or chart content, and bug documentation (Playwright screenshots documentation; accessed October 3, 2026). Use Playwright to emulate dark mode and capture the page
Playwright supports emulating the browser’s preferred color scheme as light or dark. Set it before loading the page so the site can use that preference during its initial render (Playwright emulation documentation; accessed October 3, 2026).
Runnable Node.js example
This script opens a fresh Chromium context with a dark preference, waits for the page to load, and saves a full-page PNG. It requires Node.js and Playwright installed in the project.

For pages that keep network connections open or continually fetch data, networkidle may never arrive; use waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' and then wait for a relevant selector or a short, deliberate delay instead. For example, after navigation you can use await page.locator('main').waitFor() when the main content is the meaningful readiness signal.

Set the preference after creating a page
If your workflow already created a page, Playwright also permits setting the emulated preference with await page.emulateMedia({ colorScheme: 'dark' }). Do this before capturing, and preferably before navigation if you need the page’s initial render to honor the preference.

Use a page-level theme toggle when the site requires it
Color-scheme emulation is a browser preference signal, not a universal dark-mode switch. A site may ignore it, use a saved theme setting, or offer a separate theme button. Inspect the page or its accessible structure, activate the site’s own control if appropriate, wait for the appearance to settle, and then capture. Do not report success solely because Playwright accepted the dark preference.
Choose the right screenshot target and format

Playwright’s screenshot documentation covers viewport, element, and full-page captures; custom filenames; PNG, JPEG, and WebP output; and high-resolution device-pixel capture (Playwright screenshots documentation; accessed October 3, 2026). PNG is the documented default format, and when no filename is supplied the documented default is a timestamped file in the output directory. High-resolution capture can improve legibility for design review, but its pixel coordinates do not correspond to CSS-pixel mouse coordinates.

Troubleshooting
- The screenshot is still light. The site may not respond to the browser preference or may require its own theme toggle. Inspect the rendered page and interact with that toggle if necessary.
- Navigation times out waiting for network idle. A persistent connection or recurring requests can prevent network idle. Wait for
domcontentloadedand then a content-specific selector or suitable delay. - The full-page image omits content lower down. Lazy-loaded images or sections may not exist until scrolling. Scroll through the page or otherwise trigger the content, wait for it to appear, then capture and inspect.
- The agent cannot reach an authenticated page. An isolated agent browser may not have the user’s cookies or sign-in state. In VS Code, explicitly share an existing tab when authenticated state is needed.
- The image is hard to read at normal scale. Use a larger viewport or a high-resolution capture where supported; remember high-resolution pixel coordinates are not CSS-pixel coordinates.
- A saved file does not prove the desired result. Open or inspect the image and verify its theme, target, and completeness before reporting the task as successful.
