How to Use an AI Agent to Screenshot a Webpage from a Remote Browser

Use a direct screenshot endpoint for a known URL, or connect an AI agent to a remote browser when it must navigate, interact, and verify the page before capture.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a known URL and a straightforward capture, call a screenshot API directly. If the agent must first navigate, accept a consent dialog, log in, or wait for content, use an interactive remote-browser session: inspect the page, act on it, take a fresh snapshot, and capture the result. Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture based on what you need to verify.

Choose a direct capture or an interactive browser session

A direct screenshot endpoint is the simplest option when you already know the URL and capture settings. An interactive agent session is better when the page must change before the final image—for example, to open a menu, complete a form, or reach a page behind a dialog.

  • One-shot capture: Send a URL and screenshot options to an API. No browser interaction is needed from the agent.
  • Interactive capture: Connect to a remote browser, navigate, inspect the current page, perform actions, and capture after the desired state appears.
  • MCP tool: Give an MCP-compatible assistant access to screenshot or browser tools. This avoids writing the orchestration code yourself, but the workflow still needs a way to observe and change page state when necessary.

Browserless distinguishes its screenshot endpoint, which does not require a WebSocket connection, from a browser connection for interaction or waiting on dynamic content. Its guidance is to use a browser connection when the page must be interacted with or awaited before capture: Browserless screenshot and browser connection documentation.

Pick the screenshot scope before capturing

Scope What it contains Use it for
Viewport The portion currently visible in the browser window Checking a visible state, dialog, or above-the-fold layout
Full page The full scrollable page Saving or reviewing a long article or documentation page
Element or region A selected element or clipped area Capturing a chart, component, or specific section

Playwright CLI documents viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, as well as PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. PNG is its default when the filename does not imply another format. Browserless documents PNG and JPEG for its endpoint and selector, clip, and full-page scope for its agent screenshot action. Options vary by tool; check the relevant documentation before reusing parameters across providers.

A screenshot is for visual inspection; it is not a dependable source of element references for the next interaction. Playwright recommends using an accessibility snapshot for interaction references and page structure, then using a screenshot to verify the visual result. See Playwright accessibility snapshots and Playwright screenshots.

Use an MCP agent when the client already supports MCP

If your assistant supports MCP, connect it to a browser or screenshot MCP server and ask it to navigate and save a screenshot. Browserless documents an MCP example that invokes browserless_smartscraper for a full-page capture and asks the agent to save the result as an image. That is a low-code route; the example requires a Browserless API token. Follow the current setup and tool instructions in Browserless MCP server documentation.

For a page that needs no interaction, a single-page scraper can be enough. For login, pagination, menus, forms, or consent dialogs, use an agent session capable of navigating and acting on the page. Browserless describes sessions as one-shot by default, with an option to retain a session across tool calls; its screenshot action supports full-page, selector, or clipped-region scope, which are mutually exclusive.

Run a stateful remote-browser workflow

  1. Connect and navigate. Open the target URL in the remote browser.
  2. Inspect structure. Request a page snapshot or accessibility snapshot so the agent can identify controls and text reliably.
  3. Plan one action. Click, type, select, or scroll using the references in the snapshot.
  4. Inspect again after changes. Take a fresh snapshot whenever an action changes the page state; do not assume old references still describe the page.
  5. Capture the intended state. Request viewport, full-page, or element/region scope as appropriate and save or return the image.
  6. Close the session. Release the remote browser when capture is complete.

This observe-act-observe cycle matters because the screenshot shows appearance, while the structured snapshot is what the agent should use to find and operate controls. Playwright puts it plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” See Playwright agent documentation.

Capture directly with Browserless when no interaction is needed

Browserless documents a POST request to its /screenshot endpoint with a JSON body containing the URL and options. Its example writes raw PNG bytes to a file. Use your own valid account token; documentation tokens are examples, not credentials.

curl -X POST "https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot?token=YOUR_API_TOKEN"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{"url":"https://example.com","options":{"fullPage":true,"type":"png"}}'
  --output screenshot.png

Endpoint hosts and request details can depend on your Browserless account and current product configuration; use the endpoint shown in your account documentation. If the page needs interaction or must be observed after rendering, use a connected browser session instead of treating the one-shot request as an agent workflow.

Connect Playwright or Puppeteer to a remote browser

A remote Playwright or Puppeteer connection gives code control of a browser session before the screenshot. Browserless documents both approaches using a WebSocket endpoint. The examples below show the structure; substitute the WebSocket endpoint and token provided for your account. The wait condition is a choice, not a guarantee that every page has finished rendering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playwright (Node.js)

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.connect(
    'wss://production-sfo.browserless.io?token=YOUR_API_TOKEN'
  );
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Puppeteer (Node.js)

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
    browserWSEndpoint: 'wss://production-sfo.browserless.io?token=YOUR_API_TOKEN'
  });
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The finally cleanup releases the connected session whether the navigation or capture succeeds or fails. For delayed content, wait for a meaningful selector or page-specific condition when available rather than assuming network-idle means the page is visually complete. Browserless’s remote connection examples and setup details are in its quick-start documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

If you know the target URL and want a screenshot without managing a remote browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its capture can accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf MCP tools.

Protect credentials, images, and sessions

  • Keep API tokens in runtime or tool configuration rather than prompts, published examples, screenshots, or application logs.
  • Assume screenshots can contain sensitive account or page data. OpenAI’s computer-use documentation advises limiting them to authorized viewers and keeping them out of application logs: OpenAI computer-use documentation.
  • Close connected browser sessions after use to avoid leaving remote resources allocated.
  • Use structured snapshots to locate controls and screenshots to inspect appearance; do not expose either output more widely than needed.

Troubleshoot common capture failures

The screenshot shows a loading state or missing content

The page may render content after the chosen navigation event or continue making network requests. Wait for a page-specific selector or condition and inspect a fresh snapshot before capturing. A generic networkidle or networkidle2 wait is not reliable for every dynamic site.

The agent clicks the wrong control or uses a stale reference

Take a new structured snapshot after navigation, opening a dialog, submitting a form, or any action that changes page state. Use snapshot references to act; use the screenshot to visually confirm the result.

The image is cropped or much longer than expected

Confirm whether the request asks for viewport, full-page, or element/clip capture. For a long page use full-page; for a single component use a selector or clip if the provider supports it. Some tools make full-page and selector/clip options mutually exclusive.

The remote connection fails

Check that the WebSocket endpoint and account token match the provider’s current account configuration, and that the runtime has the required browser client library. Do not copy a documentation example token as if it were an active account credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The job completes but the output file is missing or invalid

For an API response, verify the request succeeded and returned image bytes before treating the response as a PNG file. For a connected session, confirm the screenshot path is writable and the capture call completed before closing the browser.

A session remains open after an error

Put browser cleanup in a finally block so it runs on success and failure. Avoid terminating the runtime before the close call has a chance to execute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should an AI agent use a screenshot or an accessibility snapshot to interact with a page?

Use a structured or accessibility snapshot to locate and operate controls; use a screenshot to check visual appearance.

Can I capture a page without opening a remote browser session?

Yes. A screenshot REST endpoint can capture a known URL and options directly; use an interactive session when the agent needs to change or inspect page state first.
