Amazon CloudFront delivers a live stream to viewers; it does not encode or package the video. First, an upstream encoder must create the stream’s media segments and playback manifest. A typical AWS workflow uses MediaLive to encode, MediaPackage to package when needed, and CloudFront as the viewer-facing delivery layer. The exact components depend on the formats and playback features your service requires.

Choose the encoding and origin workflow

Start with the source feed and the formats your viewers’ devices need. AWS describes two common paths: use MediaPackage when you need its packaging and playback features, or use MediaStore as an origin when the encoder’s outputs are already in the formats required by viewers.

Workflow component Role Use it when
MediaLive Encodes live video in real time and can produce adaptive-bitrate outputs. You need AWS to encode the incoming live feed.
MediaPackage Packages content for delivery formats and supports packaging features. You need multiple output formats, device support, DRM, or MediaPackage manifest functions.
MediaStore Acts as a scalable origin for prepared outputs. MediaLive already produces the formats your viewers’ devices need and you do not need MediaPackage’s packaging features.
CloudFront Delivers the prepared manifests and media segments to viewers. You want a CDN in front of the selected origin.

An encoder packages video into segments and creates manifests that describe those segments and their playback order. Common formats include Apple HLS, MPEG DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. CloudFront sits downstream of that work; it cannot turn an unprepared live feed into a playable stream. (Amazon CloudFront Developer Guide; AWS live-streaming guidance.)

  1. Prepare the stream upstream. Ingest the source feed and encode it with MediaLive if required. Choose MediaPackage or MediaStore based on whether the output needs further packaging and which features you need.
  2. Create or identify the origin. Use the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container as the CloudFront distribution’s origin. Confirm the endpoint’s actual path and output format; the path patterns and behaviors must match it.
  3. Configure the distribution. Set the origin and origin path, then create cache behaviors that route requests for the relevant manifests and media segments to that origin. For MediaPackage, AWS’s documented approach typically separates manifest requests from segment requests. Use format-appropriate patterns rather than assuming every stream uses the same extensions.
  4. Set caching and query-string forwarding deliberately. For live MediaPackage content, AWS documents a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help avoid serving stale content. Its documented policy includes the MediaPackage m modification-time query string. Forward optional parameters only when the corresponding feature is enabled.
  5. Restrict access to the origin. AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront. Its reference solution uses a custom HTTP header named CDN Identifier and stores the identifier in Secrets Manager. Configure the origin-side authorization as well as the CloudFront request; a header added only on one side will not provide the intended protection.
  6. Use the CloudFront URL in the player. Have the media player request the stream’s media files through the standard CloudFront URL for the distribution, rather than directing viewers to the origin endpoint.

Match cache behaviors to the stream format

Manifests and media segments are different requests, and the right routing patterns depend on the packaging format. AWS’s documented MediaPackage examples distinguish them as follows:

Format Manifest request Media segment request Behavior to account for
HLS .m3u8 .ts Route manifests and segments with suitable separate behaviors.
CMAF .m3u8 .mp4 Route manifests and segments with suitable separate behaviors.
DASH .mpd .mp4 Route manifests and segments with suitable separate behaviors.
Smooth Streaming Single manifest behavior Not specified as a separate behavior in the cited AWS guidance Follow the current format-specific AWS guide and endpoint path.

These extensions are useful when designing behavior patterns, but they are not a substitute for checking the actual endpoint path and request structure of your chosen MediaPackage output. A behavior that matches a manifest but not its segments—or vice versa—can leave the player with an incomplete stream.

Forward only the query strings your features use

Live manifests can use query strings for freshness or playback features. AWS’s MediaPackage guidance includes the m modification-time parameter in its documented live policy. Add other parameters only when your setup uses the associated feature:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • start and end for time-shifted viewing.
  • aws.manifestfilter for manifest filtering.
  • _HLS_msn and _HLS_part for LL-HLS blocking playlist requests.

Forwarding unnecessary parameters is not a replacement for selecting the right cache behavior. Check which parameters the player and origin require, then configure the distribution accordingly. In particular, do not add LL-HLS or time-shift parameters to a workflow that does not use those features.

Plan for origin and delivery resilience

Choose redundancy according to the failure modes your service needs to handle. AWS’s broader Live Streaming on AWS reference architecture uses parallel MediaLive feeds, packages HLS, DASH, and CMAF through MediaPackage, and delivers through CloudFront with a CDN Identifier header.

Media quality-aware resiliency

AWS documents media quality-aware resiliency (MQAR) for MediaPackage v2 origins. It uses a MediaLive-generated Media Quality Confidence Score to select between origins. The documented process makes a primary GET request and a concurrent secondary HEAD request, tracks origin scores, and uses the higher-scoring origin for later requests.

For cross-Region deployment, AWS says the design needs a secondary channel in another Region with matching settings and an origin group configured for media quality scoring. This is a specific MediaPackage v2 capability, not a general guarantee that any pair of origins will fail over based on stream quality. Check AWS’s current MQAR documentation for availability and configuration requirements before designing around it.

Estimate costs using your event’s assumptions

CloudFront delivery can be a substantial part of a live event’s modeled cost. AWS’s sample figures below are estimates for specific one-hour events using US East (N. Virginia) assumptions and highest-bitrate viewer consumption; AWS does not state a publication year for the accessed guide. They are examples, not current quotes or universal benchmarks, and AWS notes that prices are subject to change. QVBR and variable video complexity can lower the estimate.

AWS sample event MediaLive MediaPackage CloudFront Estimated total
One hour, 1,000 viewers; US East (N. Virginia) assumptions and highest-bitrate viewer consumption $1.99/hour $0.51/hour $67.24/hour $69.74/hour
One-hour live event, approximately 10,000 viewers; US East (N. Virginia) assumptions, highest-bitrate viewer consumption, and a 99% CDN-to-MediaPackage cache-hit ratio $3.75/hour $9.01/hour $1,492.56/hour $1,505.60/hour

For your own estimate, model the audience, bitrate, cache-hit behavior, AWS Region, and service configuration you expect to use, then check current AWS pricing for those conditions. Viewer consumption and delivery volume can make the CDN portion differ sharply from an event using a different audience or bitrate.

Troubleshoot common playback failures

  • The player cannot start playback: Check that the encoder is producing a manifest and media segments, that the selected packaging format matches the player, and that the player is using the CloudFront URL.
  • The manifest loads but the stream does not continue: Check whether the segment requests match a CloudFront behavior and reach the configured origin. Confirm that the behavior patterns correspond to the output format and endpoint path.
  • Viewers see stale live content: Review the cache policy and query-string handling. For live MediaPackage content, AWS documents a minimum TTL of five seconds or less and inclusion of the m modification-time query string in its live policy.
  • Time-shift, manifest filtering, or LL-HLS requests fail: Verify that the required feature is enabled upstream and that its associated query strings are forwarded. For time shifting, check start and end; for manifest filtering, check aws.manifestfilter; for LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, check _HLS_msn and _HLS_part.
  • CloudFront cannot retrieve protected MediaPackage content: Check that the origin authorization configuration and CloudFront custom header agree. AWS’s reference design uses a CDN Identifier header, with the identifier stored in Secrets Manager.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings—not a live camera or a general-purpose AWS CDN—StreamNeo is a separate option built for that job: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
